Job offer - Need input from fellow MTs - Radiology

Posted: Jul 29, 2010

FT IC Radiology  Per minute

0.95 per minute until out of QA

1.05 per minute following release from QA

600 minute minimum per pay period.

Above 120 minutes = 1 and 1/2 x 1.05 per minute

I have over 15 years of experience.  I need to know if this can pay my bills but it is hard to gauge without knowing the account (how many templates/normals are used, if cherrypicking takes place, if the account is overstaffed or if there is working during the afternoon shift).

I'd appreciate any input.  I did an archive search and a year ago, pay per the minute for radiology was not viewed as being lucrative by most.

Thank you.

I've worked per minute, per report, per page, per line.... and the only thing you can hope for is an average. So using the average that 1 minute of dictation takes 3 minutes to process, then you'll do 20 minutes of dictation an hour for $20+ an hour.

My experience with radiology says you should be able to do that at a MINIUM, but more likely will do a 2:1 ratio which could be really lucrative.

Yes, there could be hard dictators, there could be lots of normals, there could be good dictators, there could be few normals.... but the AVERAGE is that's a pretty decent gig compared to what's out there these days.

Pay by minute - Rad MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to be paid by the minute for rad before going to hourly salary. I work on site so my rate was a little higher but your offer does not look bad, I agree with the 2:1 ratio. We do not have to fill in demographics so that would make a difference. If the company making the offer has a good reputation I would say to go for it!

Maybe this comparison will help you - Good Luck

I actually find it very telling of what I can expect to make per pay period by what the MINIMUM lines (or minutes in this case) are and where incentives begin.

Most companies do not want to make the minimum lines per pay period too low, because then they will have MTs who ONLY do the minimum, meaning the company will have to hire more MTs to cover for TAT.  They also do not want to make the minimum too low because that makes it harder to get rid of people who simply cannot handle the job.  It is much more palatable for the company to say “You are fired because you are not meeting minimum line requirements.”

As we are all too painfully aware, no MTSO wants to give us a penny more than they have to.  So, incentives are usually just out of reach for the average Medical Transcriptionist and only maybe the top 5 to 10% of Medical Transcriptionists at that company actually achieve incentive on a regular basis.

I am a bit confused as to when this incentive begins.  After 120 minutes?  Is that after 120 minutes per day, week, or pay period?

They require a minimum of 600 minutes per pay period.

Without knowing the details of when pay periods are (weekly, biweekly, bimonthly) and if the 600 minutes per pay period is for full-time (80 hours per pay period  - 60 minutes per day – 7.5 minutes per hour) or part-time (40 hours per pay period – 120 minutes per day – 15 minutes per hour), I will use biweekly, full-time just for ease.  I will also assume this is all straight transcription with no Speech Recognition.

Okay, if I were given that offer, here is how I would decide if I wanted to try it or not.

1.05 per minute following release from QA

600 minute minimum per pay period.

Most companies set their minimum lines/minutes per day period on what they believe 75% of their Medical Transcriptionists can produce (otherwise, they would not be able to adequately staff to keep within TAT).  They know that in any given time frame, some will consistently produce less than minimum, while others will consistently produce more than minimum, and on average, over a year’s time, a certain total number of lines will be produced by the average MT.

It appears that presently, the starting rate for straight transcription is $0.08 cents per line, with a minimum line requirement of 1200 lines per day (12,000 lines per 10 day pay period).

Based on an 80-hour pay period, using 12,000 lines per pay period times $0.08 cents per day, the company expects to pay $960 per pay period gross (or $12.00 per hour) MINIMUM.

The company you are inquiring about has a minimum of 600 minutes per pay period (60 minutes per day), at $1.05 per minute.

Using 600 minutes per day period times $1.05 per minute, the company expects to pay $630 per pay period gross (or $7.875 per hour based on an 80-hour pay period).

Depending on when the 120 minute incentive begins, it sounds like their transcriptionists may be producing less than other companies expect their MTs to produce per pay period.  That could mean that the dictation is more difficult, there are more non-typing interruptions, or any number of other external forces which causes their average MT to only make a minimum of $630 per pay period gross.

So, if the 120 minutes for incentive is after 120 minutes per day – I would pass.

If the 120 minutes for incentive is after 120 minutes per week – I might give it a try to find out how difficult it is to reach incentive (keeping my old job as a backup).

If the 120 minutes for incentive is after 120 minutes per pay period – I would take the job if it is $1.575 per minute after 120 minutes and hope it is easy to reach incentive.

First 120 minutes times $1.05 = 126.00

600 – 120 = next 480 minutes x $1.575 = 756.00

TOTAL per pay period minimum = $882.00

Good Luck.

I would say per minute is probably better than per line because you get paid for the time you have to listen to the report. You don't get paid for listening to dead air, hems or haws, or lines they dictate, but then change their mind and you have to erase it, when you get paid by the line. You know that if you listen to 600 minutes, you get paid $630 regardless of how many lines it is and regardless of how long it took you.

Radiology - My experience has been...

[ In Reply To ..]
with over 25 years Radiology experience trying to come up with fair compensation for Radiology has always been difficult. Because the reports are generally much shorter than acute care reports, it is harder to get a line count due to the fact that you are constantly going into the system and depending on demographics you may or may not need to edit, verify, add to, etc. you spend alot of "time" not actually transcribing the report but rather messing with the demographics only to be told give it my normal chest x-ray which Dr. Short makes into a two line report with a one line impression. I too think the thought that pay by the minute compensates you for dead air time, start and stop dictators, dictators that change their mind and tell you "Go back to where I said......." is a valid point. For a Radiology account I think by the minute is a much fairer compensation rate than by the line. I would verify what the compensation is for normal reports. If Dr. X says give it my normal 2-view chest and you put in the template are they paying you for the normal reports, some companies play the game of not paying for normal templates.

1200 lines usually is around 100 minutes. Thus $1.05 per minute of dictation would be 105.00 per day for 100 minutes (1200 lines) of dictation, which comes to about 8.8 cpl. The whole issue of how good this is would depend on the account and platform. :)

I am a rad MT looking for work. I have 20 years experience. Does anyone know of a company I could apply to?

If you are FT, the best rad company I have found is Keystrokes. If you are part time, the rates mig - RadMT

[ In Reply To ..]
If you are full time, the pay is higher than most companies. I know they have been bashed here in the last few days since going to a tiered system, but even the part-time radiology rate is higher than I was getting at another company. At Keystrokes, I have enough work, am paid on time and have a great manager. That is more than I could say for many of the other companies out there.

Input Wanted From My Fellow MQ'rs
Jun 10, 2010

I'm totally getting burned out at MQ.  If it's not the NJA with requests to change schedule, then it's the lack of primary and getting other unknown accounts slowing me down.  I've gone from full-time at MQ down to working part-time with another part-time job to make up lost income now for the past 7 months.  When I started MT'ing so many years ago, the pay was great and being able to set my own schedule was a real plus as well.  It was the ...

May 04, 2010

I have been working for this hospital a year, after having worked from home for 15 years.  They brought their transcription back in-house and hired me and another transcriptionist around the same time. From the beginning, I was more productive than the other transcriptions, but there was not a minimum quota set at that time that we were aware of, so we were just cruising along.  Well, the work started getting behind and they started looking closely at the minutes we were doing, and I w ...

THANK YOU FOR ALL MY FELLOW MTs

I just wanted to take the time to thank all of you guys for being so caring about each other.  When the system went down, you were right there encouraging each other.  Somebody gave the site address of the Red/Yello/Green status (which I admit I had forgotten and could not get into E-mail to retrieve it).  I went to the site and clicked right and made a shortcut.  Others gave instructions on what to do for down time.  I just think you all are GREAT!!!  It is so nice ...

Help Out There For A Fellow MT?
Aug 04, 2012

Can someone help me get a job there?  I am a very hard worker, not afraid of ESL, stick to my schedule, QA 99-100%.  I just finished the test, but I was wondering how they grade, based on what, because I didn't get a chance to explain things like headings, use of BOS (using mL for cc, is that already expected throughout the industry) or was everything supposed to be strict verbatim?  Also, punctuation and grammar now is expected to be perfect, but if it doesn't interfere ...

I am now down to 3 companies (from 4) trying to make a living at this, wondering what I should do next.  I'd like to go get my coding diploma and move on from there as I cannot take this anymore.  Four jobs and between all of them I got $700 last week and am still waiting for checks to arrive.  I asked one of them why it wasn't DD and they said they would cut and mail the check.  Lord knows when the other one will arrive.  I don't know, don't YOU ...

Some Advice For Fellow Newbies

As a former “newbie”, I would like to offer a little bit of advice to other newbies.  When I first got into medical transcription, I thought that some of the advice given on these boards was a little harsh and sometimes downright nasty.  Without a doubt, there are always going to be some nasty people on message boards, but overall, I think most of the advice given here is well intentioned.  Let me explain a little bit of my story.   I was unemployed for about si ...

Redpen And Fellow Coders, Infusion?
Jun 24, 2010

What is your opinion on the ICD-9 Procedure code for an infusion of Remicade for rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn's disease?  Since this is considered a high-risk drug, the CPT codes are in the antineoplastic category.  But matching up a ICD-9 is not clear.  Since Remicade is a biologic response modifier you can go down that path.  It is also a monoclonal antibody, so you can go down that path.  So far I have come up with 99.28, 99.25, 00.18, and the usual 99.29.  ...
