How long have you worked for your company? - Hali9

Posted: Nov 30, 2009

It seems there is so much "job jumping" with MTs and of course not all by the fault of the MT, but companies changing, problems arising, etc.  I was just wondering how long was your longest AT HOME MT position and do you think it is possible for long-term retirement-type work, while working at home as an MT.

The first national company I worked for, was just for a year. I then found a job that I REALLY enjoyed and worked for them for five years until for some reason they wanted me to quit. Out of the blue they picked and picked and picked and acting like I had started working for them yesterday or something. It was crazy, so I found a new job in January of this year and quit them. I got another supplemental job in March of this year also. So, I suppose the five-year job was my longest run.

8 years - anon

My first job was 15 years at a University Hospital - left because I moved across country.

My second job was in the same office from 1990 to 2003 but we were bought and sold 3 times, but I considered it the same place, same desk, same supervisor, etc. Just different company name, one of which was MedQuist. I then moved across country again, and worked from home for MQ until 2008 when I could not take the pain, and decrease by $800 a month in paycheck. So I am now at my current job since August 2008.

As far as retirement-type work; it depends on how many years you have left before you retire. I am old enough to retire in about 6 years, but I really do not think this profession will really last that long; although not sure what else to do if it does peter out before I am old enough. If you are young and just starting out, and have 30 years to go; don't think it will be around that long, at least not in the form which are used to.

I have three accounts - rj

11 years, 4-1/2 years, and 18 months.

I will be losing the four-year account by the end of the year as they have switched from two at-home IC's to an offshore service.

I have 20 years until retirement age. I don't know what I will do when this job is no more. Probably go back to working in offices and/or hospitals, or maybe find a whole new field altogether.

I started out at a small office and worked there for 2 years.

Went to an at home position in Jan. 1998 and that company was bought by the Q, been there ever since, so in January it will be 12 years.

A year and a half ago, I added on a part-time IC position for other company due to low work and job uncertainty, and currently doing both jobs still.

I have 25 years to go before I can retire! Oh dear.... no I do not believe MT will be around that long. I will end up working in an office for 10 bucks an hour and crying every day that I have to leave my house.

Remember, most MTs don't post on forums, happy or unhappy. - MissIndigo

This is a relatively excitable community center and attracts more of the sort of people who head for the town center to see what's happening than those who head out to tend the garden. Naturally people faced with important changes or in outright trouble are going to be strongly represented.

As long as this industry continues to exist (a big uncertainty), mmost of its people, like me, will be working one job for at least a few years. There's relatively little vertical or horizontal "career" movement from a home position, and those reasons for improving by moving are not of interest to many of us.

Retirement type income? The trend is definitely away from that brief wild period as we moved home of whatever hours we wanted/whenever we wanted back to a fixed schedule. The practitioners need patient reports in the files as immediately as can be managed, which in this global computerized era does not require the day shift to arrive or a home worker to feel like getting around to it. And whether full or part time, there's nothing "retirement" about production pay--you're paid for what you work, not a penny more, and usually lose a lot of potential incentive income by putting out relatively little. As extra part-time income, though, it can be very acceptable. I really hope I will be able to do this or something like it some day after retirement as extra income (China next year or India...?)

Regarding job jumping (as opposed to being pushed), most people don't want to and don't have to, even in this unsettled period. Let's face it, changing jobs, with the large investment required to get up to speed AND to teach employers they want to keep you happy enough to stay, is problematic.

Has Anyone Had A Company To Sue Them? (Sorry This Is A Little Long)
Jun 01, 2010

This is what happened.  I have done transcription for a local doctor for two years, no problems.  Well, apparently the office starting having money problems and the doctor called me in to ask me how I count the lines.  I told him that I have counting software based on 65 characters with spaces.  I have to keep a log that has patient name, how many lines and how much the report costs, and I turn in an invoice with that. So, anyway, when I told him about the software and the 6 ...

We are a pretty big company, and we think we know what transcriptionists want, but it doesn't hurt to ask.  There are a lot of top people in our industry that are finding themselves without jobs, often without notice, both managers and transcriptionists.  I think that the tide is turning, and that we need to make sure that we treat our people right, so if you could take a few minutes and answer this, maybe we can make a difference.  I am asking for real answers, ones that ar ...

Why Does It Take So Long?
Mar 08, 2011

Anyone out there notice this?  That it takes twice as long to do an op note anymore in ASR what with all the cutting, pasting, standards, going back to check whether or not to delete headings, blah, blah.  It used to be a cinch to simply bring in one of my standards and make the appropriate changes according to the audio, but now with ASR, it takes twice as long.  I feel like I'm running in place and going nowhere just to make ASR learn something.  It's such a waste ...

How Long Does It Take To Not Be Known As An MT

I have known where this 'profession' was headed for years; even in the late 1990s I knew. I earned the education that I need with both an associate degree and bachelor's degree (bachelor's degree from Big 10 university) and, still, many people view me as an MT, which we can all agree is not good. I have experience in my new line of work, and I have worked in that field in the past. How long is it really going to take before people do not view me with all the negative stereoty ...
