To Seasoned MTs: How long does it take before you realize that a company is not a good fit? sm - anon

Posted: Nov 12, 2009

Basically meaning that the platform is not going to MT friendly or you're going to spend too much time filling in patient demo, or a myriad of any other reasons.  And once you found out that it wasn't going to work out, how long did you stick it out?

If the demos slow you down that much....you already - know....time to move on!

Is the situation completely unworkable or just less than ideal?

I once quit on the spot after about 6 days because had I stayed I literally would have been unable to pay my bills. Fortunately I had another PT job wanting me to give them more time anyway.

My platform is horrible. I worked on Chartnet (the best) before so the new one seemed the worst of the worst, and I still think it is. It could work if the company IT would program more auto demo population.

As I became used to the dictators, I found the line count was so very easy to get. I have a lot of templates on the account. I would not leave the company over the platform (which I hate) because I love the account. Have you reached this point of knowing the account? Is it worth it? If not, give it time. If so, start looking and make sure you are not jumping out of a frying pan and into a fire. Good luck.

I traveled some years ago to a place in my same state to get hands on experience in a job I wanted to take. The people were exceptionally nice, the work was hospital acute care that I could do without a doubt and no trouble there. Their platform really was terrible. I stayed probably a total of about 3 weeks. It was not worth it losing money when the line count you knew you could do was never there, even getting the reports ok otherwise.

I knew from day one a company was not going to be a good fit. - Tired&CrankyMT

There are so many reasons for a company not to be a good fit. One could be an antiquated platform, MT unfriendly platform. One could be you prefer direct deposit and they mail checks. One could be the actual accounts are horrid. One could be you really don't like your hours, your boss, your QA, etc. The list just goes on and on.

I can tell you from my own experience that holding on to a job you are already questioning whether a good fit or not will end up hurting you in the long run, financially and/or physically.

I had been working 2 jobs a while back. I loved both my part time and full time job, but my part time job was where the money was. I knew from the start my full time job was not going to work out for me. In 4 hours part time on the most horrid ESL accounts, I produced more lines than I could working 8 hours full time with native-English speaking accounts. I honestly felt like a failure for the first time as an MT. Did I quit? Nope, I kept pushing myself harder for my full time job.

I do not job hop, so the thought of quitting so quickly made me feel uneasy. I stayed with them 6 months, which I now know was 5 months and 28 days longer than I should have stayed.

I hated the platform and I knew it from day 1 working on it. The platform was nothing more than a computerized version of a typewriter, but I kept trying my best to make this company be a good fit for me.

The injuries I sustained to my hands, wrists, leg and ankle were unbelievable. I used to work wearing braces on my ankle, knee cap, upper parts of both my arms, my wrists and hands and I had trouble walking.

While my leg and ankle have improved since quitting, I cannot say the same for my wrists and hands as those aches and pains remain with me to this day, but they are a lot more tolerable than they had been, even after working 12 hours straight.

Another thing I knew I didn't like was the tiered pay scale. I never seemed to be able to make the minimums to hit the next tier no matter how hard I tried, so I never had the 'benefit of tiered incentives,' to earn the line rate I should have been paid for every line I produced, but I could hit that same minimum line and exceed it easily on my part time job, mainly because the part time job's platform is Word based.

My advice to you: Make a list of things you expect from an MT platform and also what the MTSO offers you in return for your services. Then start e-mailing recruiters with questions regarding each area on your list that is not covered fully in their ads, which is exactly what I do before I decide to test with any given company. If the recruiter e-mails you back with answers, good for you. If your e-mail goes unanswered for days on end, well, there's another possible warning sign.

When you come across one that offers the majority of the things you've listed, then chances are you will have found yourself a good fit and you should apply with them.

Having a word based platform is an absolute MUST for me. Another absolute must for me is no tiered pay scale. I want a flat rate cpl for every line and I will not work for lower than 9 cpl and even that I find too low.

I have long since switched to full time with the same company that I worked for part time. Those 3 must-haves on my list are met with them, but I still e-mail recruiters and keep a running list of places with future potential. In this field there is no job security, so be prepared to move on to the next opportunity always.

Best of luck to you.

Has Anyone Had A Company To Sue Them? (Sorry This Is A Little Long)
Jun 01, 2010

This is what happened.  I have done transcription for a local doctor for two years, no problems.  Well, apparently the office starting having money problems and the doctor called me in to ask me how I count the lines.  I told him that I have counting software based on 65 characters with spaces.  I have to keep a log that has patient name, how many lines and how much the report costs, and I turn in an invoice with that. So, anyway, when I told him about the software and the 6 ...

How Long Have You Worked For Your Company?
Nov 30, 2009

It seems there is so much "job jumping" with MTs and of course not all by the fault of the MT, but companies changing, problems arising, etc.  I was just wondering how long was your longest AT HOME MT position and do you think it is possible for long-term retirement-type work, while working at home as an MT. ...

Productivity Questions For You Seasoned MTs
Jun 29, 2011

From what I've read, most places require a daily minimum of 1000-1500 (varies) per day. I was wondering, on average, how long does it take a new MT to be able to reach this? Also, do you usually exceed your minimum? If so, by how much? I understand that these kinds of things will vary greatly from one MT to the next, I am just trying to get a general idea. Thanks in advance for your input! :) ...

Opinions Wanted From Seasoned MTs Regarding MT Training
Jan 12, 2010

Opinions wanted.  Should instructors at Medical Transcription Schools have prior experience as a Medical Transcriptionist?  Can someone who has never done Medical Transcription themselves teach someone else properly? If I spend $2650 plus $355 for “hardcover medical dictionaries,” I would hope the person instructing me at least had a clue how to use them.             Here is a job opening posting:    P ...

Question For New Graduates; Seasoned MTs Welcome To Respond Also
Feb 13, 2011

From reading post after post on the New MTs Board, it seems like one of the main reasons a lot of people chose the Medical Transcription field is because they were lured in by the “work at home, when you want” dream.  But when reading through the job opening ads, any type of flexibility is usually reserved for Independent Contractor positions, and IC positions usually want lots of experience so the MT can work with little or no supervision. On top of that, at least in my opinio ...

Seasoned MTs Changing Companies After Years?
Mar 02, 2015

Hi.  I've been with the same company for years and am so unhappy with it.  I'd like to maybe work for another company, but it doesn't seem worth it.  After years of building up my glossaries, I'd be starting all over again from scratch and I've heard bad things about every company out there it seems.  Plus, I'm sure my pay would be lower to start.  Anyone go to a different company after years with the same one?   ...

Keystrokes - A Good Company Gone Bad Sm

KS seems to be getting lower and lower in the popularity with emplooyees test. I worked for them once but left for the reasons everyone is talking about.  There was no communication. The owner was never truthful and everyone is afraid of her because of her horrible temper tantrums. The accounts are overstaffed - you might get put on another account but it will be overstaffed too. The only accounts that are not overstaffed are the terrible ones that no one wants to work on and it is imp ...

Good Company With Benefits For New MT
