I was 63 when I filed for early SS - Old Anon. SM

and it still took about 3 months before receiving my first check. I started my application in April. If I remember correctly, my first check came the third Wednesday in July. That was 8 years ago, so I'm not absolutely sure. I continued working too but had to cut back my hours a bit so as not to go over the income thresholds and have my benefit held. I did go over a few times though for just a month, but when I turned 66, I was free to earn as much as I wanted. I don't know why the OP thinks she has to quit work when she files for early SS when he/she doesn't. My neighbor also thought that she had to quit to file was struggling financially and I suggested she file for early SS to supplement her income. Someone above suggested going to the SS office and talking to someone in person. I did that. You can call ahead and make an appointment or just show up. You take a number and have to wait. I think the most I waited was about half an hour. While I was there, they also checked to see if I could file under my ex-husband's benefit, but my benefit was larger, so that didn't work out. It's not that we want to file 3 months ahead, they tell you that you should file 3 months ahead and you continue working while waiting for your check to kick in.
