I think if she is going to be living so tight even with SS checks, she really can't afford to retire, period. There is no way for her to feel secure even if she finds an income that will bridge her until SS checks come in.
Not being a Debbie Downer, but living on the edge is no way to go. I would not recommend she borrow money from family members, as was suggested. She may have already been doing that, and she simply can't promise to pay it back if her SS is her sole income and there is no room for for an unexpected expense.
To OP: DO take advantage of senior discounts. They are everywhere!
