It was stated in "ADVANCE" not so long ago that when speech recognition came out, MT's wages were lowered more or less across the board to pay for the technology. It seems the only ones who got by were the few-and-far-between hospital MTs who didn't get outsourced. Although I've heard, but don't know for certain, that even in-house MTs are now experiencing pay cuts because the C-suite is saying "pay cut or outsource."

So they have been making us pay for the speech recognition for the last 10 or so years by lowering our wages to nothing. There is/was a nasty recession around the same time and that is probably how they got away with it -- such as better to have a job paying low wages than no job.
