Task Manager - Backwoods Typist

Posted: Nov 26th, 2015 - 12:24 am In Reply to: Does anyone know how to see what is running in - the background on a computer

Whenever your computer sounds like its about to take off into space, you can right click your taskbar or do the as the other poster suggested with CTRL+ALT+DLT. Pay particular attention to the CPU usage in the bottom. If you have a high percentage, click on your Processes tab to see what service is using resources. It could be your antivirus or some other software is updating or scanning in the background. A word of caution here: DO NOT end any processes unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure of what you are doing. Ending some processes can cause instability in your system, which can be irreversible.

To see what programs are set to run in the background, click on the start menu and type msconfig in the search box, and go to startup tab. This shows you what programs starts when the computer is booted. You can clear whatever you do not want started on boot.

Make sure to check your antimalware and antivirus first to make sure their update/scan times are set for a time when the computer is not in use. Some files associated with antivirus, in particular Norton and McAfee, are known to consume A LOT of resources when performing scans or doing definition updates, which can lead to conflicts with other programs for CPU resources.

Hope this helps.
