You submit your own taxes quarterly to the IRS. You also file a Schedule C at tax time. You can take deductions for a percentage (based on square footage of your office) on heat, electric, mortgage interest or rent, any other applicable city/town taxes. Also office supplies, equipment, references, postage, mileage allowance if you use your car for a business purpose. This is not an all inclusive list. For more info, the IRS has a booklet or info on-line. As an IC, you don't get benefits; and warning, a lot of MTSOs may try to treat you like an employee with fixed schedules and refusal to let you take time off even when asked for weeks ahead of time. Some IC situations work out for you, others not so much. It's a choice you have to make.
