Is VR really learning? - catapult

Posted: May 19, 2011

Tongue out  Seriously...  I cannot for the life of me figure out what the doc was saying at one point, but VR inserted that the patient had a "menstrual valley illness"...  Glad I never had that!

How about an elderly, vaginal male? - lol

[ In Reply To ..]
It was supposed to be Filipino male. Wonder what a vaginal male looks like?

Wouldn't that make him sort of a hermaphrodite? -

Well that seems to be the great debate on this board - some think it does and stupid MTs are

[ In Reply To ..]
the ones muking up the system so the VR cannot learn. Personally, the speech dictionary is in place and these physicians need to learn how to use the VR to justify paying 3 cents 4 cents a line. I'm sure the MTSOs at this point are making more money off of us now then in the past. If they are not going to train the physicians, then they shouldn't be putting them on the VR!!!

do you remember Chekov from Star Trek? - mt

[ In Reply To ..]
Well, when I first started on VR, we had a doc who spoke like that with an even thicker accent and spoke very fast. On straight transcription very few MTs could get all of his dictation. As an experiment, he was put on VR and assigned to only 4 MTs on the team who could understand him (out of 21). It took about 2 months of correcting, but after that VR got 99% of what he said AND expanded his little slang words just like we would do if transcribing.

VR does learn.

Yeah, VR will eventually learn the voice of a physician, too - bad it takes so long, lost money

[ In Reply To ..]
99% accuracy, hmmmmmmmmmmm, You must be working on a hell of a system. I cannot get 80% accuracy from even the best speaking doctors on my VR. It constantly puts in words that are not there or leaves out words that are plain as day (don't think that has anything to do with another MT doing VR on the report, it's too clear for anyone to miss some of these words). But it is true, the creators do say that VR will eventually learn the voice of the physician and they even have instructions on how the physician (or the person dictating) themselves can make that happen.
I guess it depends - mt
[ In Reply To ..]
on your perspective. The system is MQs, but most people here only rant about how evil the company is. Of all the platforms I have worked on, theirs is by far the best for both transcription and VR and I really don't get why people who come here complain so bitterly - although my guess is that this is very vocal minority. I do find it sad when people get so stuck on any little change that they can't move forward. We work in a technological environment that changes constantly; it is what it is and there are two choices - adapt or leave.

I think the biggest issue is the pay (too low for spending as much time on this stuff - as though you had typed the whole report
[ In Reply To ..]
.
Let's face it, if you're a heavy hitter, you're never going to be able to - make the same amount of pay
[ In Reply To ..]
My own supervisor agrees with this. The VR is really set up for those who average 1200 to 1500 lines of straight typing in a day as doing VR and getting 2400-3000 lines a day would be in line with that (400 lph in VR still doesn't add up to what some of these transcriptionists were making on straight typing). Those typing 2500-3000 lines a day are really feeling the consequences of VR (I'm sure they can produce the lines that everyone seems to think are so great 400-500 lines an hour, but they are taking a huge, huge cut in pay!!! That my friend is really the issue when it comes to this VR. The pay stinks!! I personally can understand why this would be of concern to many transcriptionist, especially those single parents who have mouths to feed and all the stuff that some along with being the financial provider in a single household.
VR editors should stage a walkout and DEMAND - better pay. We have to have
[ In Reply To ..]
the same skills and training as MTs and QA people. We still listen to and read every word of the report, applying our training to everything we see and hear.

Just because our fingers aren't moving as much, doesn't mean our brains aren't. The pay for VR is a disgrace, and it should pay the same as straight transcription (which is no great shakes, itself).

If we all stopped doing VR for even just a week, we'd have them over a barrel, because they simply can't send the raw VR reports directly to the client. And judging by the garbage I see continually coming in with VR, and the fact that it NEVER learns anything, I don't think they ever will be able to do VR without skilled human editors.

Something to think about. We can't strike MT, because the Indians have their backs. But Indian work has to be edited, as well! So what will they do with their precious VR and Indian sweatshop workers if we choose NOT to edit that cr*p? Up a creek, perhaps?

Wow an example with ONE doctor and FOUR MTs - Andypudenda

[ In Reply To ..]
Too bad this doesn't describe any MTSO I know of.

You should be ashamed of yourself apologizing for Speech Wreck in the name of the almighty dollar and compromising patient care. How DO you sleep at night? Oh wait, you are obviously a SUIT.

For shame.
Are you a mean girl? - ABC

It seems from what I have been reading today, anyone that posts something positive is basically called a liar by you or that they are in management of some sort. Do you truly believe there is nothing positive about this work? Why would you still be in it if it is so awful?

Call me a happy MT...guess I'm one of the few. I'm outta here.
No not mean. not naive. Not wearing rose colored glasses. - Andypudenda
[ In Reply To ..]
Not putting my head in the sand. Pick your metaphor.

No I don't see anything positive about the MT business as it currently is. That is why I HAVE got out of the business. I refuse to compromise patient care by being a Speech Wreck apologist.

But you go ahead, dear, and do as you please. LOL. hope those rose colored glasses are on tight because there's even more turbulence ahead in the MT world.

Andypudenda - Googled that screen name
[ In Reply To ..]
If you google andypudenda, you will see they are also posting hateful comments on aparetmentratings.com about the place she lives and their "Krazy" management....regardless of what andy says, they are a negative person who is always gonna be that squeaky wheel...you are unhappy where you live and where you work, so you want to bring the rest down with you. I personally love to read your posts..its like watching a train wreck...lets see who is out to get you today..lol
LOL! Guess I'm just that 'rogue element' you MTSOs are always deluding yourselves abo - Andypudenda
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't live in an apartment. I don't know who the other Andy is but I suspect he/she is telling the truth also. Easy to dismiss people as 'disgruntled employees', etc., but the truth about Speech Wreck, greedy abusive MTSOs and the compromising of patient care is flooding out, no matter how much you suits try to baffle us with BS.

Pay no attention to that MTSO behind the curtain. LOL!

Sounds itchy and painful. :) I can SEE VR improve after I've - done a couple of reports. The next ones

[ In Reply To ..]
start downloading in the format I just corrected to. I'm sure a big part of the problem is that others are skimming by and not correcting (for instance, the sort of sloppiness, missed commas, lack of consistency, etc., often strewn throughout the ROS and PE) because when I come on again the old mistakes are there again, and the same cycle repeats.

It's the nature of this work that when one person saves herself work this way it literally creates work for others.

We talk about how hard it is to get VR to learn, BTW, but neither of my employers ever even tried to train all of us to conform to one agreed wording and punctuation for each standard physician report, abandoning that idea probably at first shudder.

The VR I type on has never understood what an introductory clause is - puts a period after each one

[ In Reply To ..]
no matter how many times I have corrected it. I find it hard to believe that another transcriptionist is typing "By the way. Instead of By the way, or "When the patient came to the hospital." I have to say this, the VR is consistently making this same mistake and there are only 3 MTs on my account, and when I pull up previous reports, these have been corrected not just left as the VR has typed it.

Too Many Dictators - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, VR can learn, but it won't with the amount of dictators they have on it that shouldn't be. Period, ended. Don't buy into the VR learning diddly.

VR Learning
Aug 05, 2011

In a training on EditScript today, we were told in editing a report to change the whole word that is wrong, not just change on letter, for example, if it puts sever and the word is supposed to be severe, to change the whole word, not just add the e.  The trainer said that the system learns better that way.  So my question is, and I would have asked her if I had thought of it at the time, does VR learn when we use word expansions.  Is it learning from the keystrokes we use or from ...

Learning A New Field
Mar 03, 2010

What would be the best way to get into another field? I have been doing neurology now for about 6 years and I am very interested in getting into something else, and really this is the only field I know because I havent had practice with anything else.  Im just getting kind of bored with the neurology lingo.  If I were to apply for a job that is hiring in a different field, would they consider me a "newby"? Has anyone ever been hired for a field they have no ex ...

I Hate Learning This Way
Apr 01, 2010

I wish somebody would figure out a way to train new hires other than setting them down with only a few hours training and letting them type their entire shift without a word from anyone, only to have QA come in the next morning and correct all the reports. I hate learning this way, I do something wrong, spell something about the facility wrong, all night long only to learn the next day that it is wrong. It is such a waste of my and my QAs time to do it this way, it sucks. And heaven forbid you h ...

Learning Coding
Jan 30, 2012

Is there any coder out there who has 'self-taught' themselves and successfully passed the CCS and working?  I'm an MT whose so ready to change to coding, but keep putting it off schooling due to being financially strapped (as MT'ing just barely pays the simple bills.....nothing more).  I also think being an MT will put me at an advantage in learning coding than someone 'off the street'/no knowledge of any facet of the medical field.  Any thoughts? ...

Learning To Dictate The RIGHT WAY?
Jun 04, 2013

I am an experienced nurse practitioner with seven years of experience. Now that I am working in an acute care environment, I am required to dictact all of my consultations. I have a template from which I am dictating. But from the results of my transcriptions, I could use some help from medical transcriptionists on how to dictate the RIGHT WAY. Of course, I was never taught how to dictate. I was taught how to use the telephone to dictate, but I was never taught the right way to dictate clearly ...

It Doesn't Seem Like Anyone Is Learning
Mar 25, 2014

This is a two-sided message. It is painfully obvious that no one is learning anything from having failed audits. This being said, I think there are a few sides to this. First, the error weights are harsh for a lot of small errors. Second, the error weighs are not harsh enough for other errors. Third, and most importantly, no one seems to be taking the time to learn anything from the audits/feedback in order to improve themselves and their work, which leads me to what I would do if ...

What I Am Enjoying About Learning To Code
