I'm excited about learning something new - Ready to Go!

Posted: Sep 11, 2012

I'm getting everything together to start on a new path. I've been impressed with so many of you who have taken on a new career even though you, like me, are well out of your 30s and 40s.

I am inspired by people I've met on here who are changing their lives. I've seen you say that it scares you, but you're doing it anyway. I really have to respect that.

Congratulations to all of us!

until it goes to india... via mmodal - have fun

Please do not bring that brand of negativity onto this board. - See message

[ In Reply To ..]
We understand why you would think that, but coding is not THAT industry. Continuing to make statements like that will just show your unfamiliarity with it. Read the old posts here for an explanation.

We do not want that kind of negativity here. It is without purpose and without a basis in fact.

well actually... - see link enclosed

Most of us have had enough of certain companies, their super-plans to control the world, and the Chicken Little "sky is falling" rhetoric.

As advanced by the company just today (9/11/12):: - Anon

[ In Reply To ..]
"Just as exciting, this aggressive growth plan now enables us to train our Indian employees with new skill sets in medical coding, in the complexities of medical billing and in the emerging field of healthcare analytics".

"M*Modal also offers voice to text and context solutions to capture the complete patient story, codify the doctor's narrative to automatically populate EMRs and other key healthcare information systems, deliver computer-assisted coding to support ICD-9 and the transition to ICD-10"

This was released today, regarding new changes and company plans. I think it's crazy to deny that greedy M*Modal would NOT find a way to offshore aspects of coding. Unless you've sat down and discussed business goals with their executives, how can you know what exactly they plan on doing regarding the coding industry? And this is now, who knows what other companies and/or technologies will be reaching into the coding business in just 2 years, in 5 years.....

Nobody is saying the sky is falling, but it certainly is something that needs to be followed. Why in the world would anybody keep denying this isn't happening? It's not being negative, it's being realistic. It's all about greed and money, and what can be computerized.

You still have no clue how broad the field is - Coder
[ In Reply To ..]
Or just how few healthcare concerns are willing to risk letting offshore concerns break the law for them.

There is life BEYOND coding. You will never know it because you are stuck looking through your restricted, pinhole view of things.

I AM a coder. I know where you can go from a start in coding. I made the switch years ago.

You are still wallowing in M*Modal land, like some kind of zombie cult members.

MM does not affect me in any way. I will always have a job because I keep moving onward.

And MM has been crowing about this for years. You should realize that it is advertising intended to bolster their stock.

Get a life! Seriously, start getting some education so you can get out of their nasty clutches. I did it and so can you. The first step is to stop obsessing about them and how they are taking over. They aren't.
Ummm...I don't even work for M*Modal - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
You know what they say about assuming....

I don't work for M*Modal and are one of the few that still make a good living ($65K last year) working for a smaller company. I'm solely interested because even though I have a degree, I'm in the process of doing due diligence about other career options so I never have to work for a corporate cutthroat MTSO. I follow coding (and a couple other options) closely. I don't refuse to ignore anything that is negative because I'm interested in the GOOD and BAD.

Okay, you win. M*Modal has no interest whatsoever in making any money from coding. They think it's fun to make up press releases about something they never intend to do. They just lie to their shareholders because it's FUN. No one will invent technology that will change the coding industry EVER. Oh brother.

I don't think that's what she said at all! - Compose yourself!
[ In Reply To ..]
Did you read and understand what the other poster wrote? I think your own biases are drowning out reason. Bring yourself down from the ceiling, know that we're in a world where corporations speak loudly and achieve only some of the things they claim they will do. This is all about PR. Do you honestly believe every piece of PR that you see?

You're right to keep reading and learning, but when it gets to the point where you are, almost paralyzed with fear, you need to lower yourself back down to the ground again and regain your composure.
"paralyzed by fear?". HA Wow, if you got that from my post... - Anon
[ In Reply To ..]
..please brush up on reading comprehension. AGAIN, as I said, I still have a good job in the MT field (5 weeks vacation and 65K last year)and my husband makes more than I do. I also went to college and have a bachelor's degree. I don't have to right now, but am exploring options because I like to keep up with the industry. Again. I know this is a very difficult 5-word sentence to understand so I will repeat it - I don't work for M-Modal. I never have, and don't plan to.

And I understand very clearly what "she" said. So you both sound bizarre to keep using that as an argument in her personal attack and your defense of it:

"you are stuck looking through your restricted, pinhole view of things."

"You are still wallowing in M*Modal land, like some kind of zombie cult members."

"MM does not affect me in any way. I will always have a job because I keep moving onward."

"You should realize that it is advertising intended to bolster their stock."

"Get a life! Seriously, start getting some education so you can get out of their nasty clutches."

I don't work for M-Modal and I will still continue looking into coding and gathering information on it. And now because I do have a life, my shift ends at 6 pm and I'm off to an art exhibit to meet friends. If any other "anon" replies, you can be sure it's not me. I've got better things to do.
OK, how about "fear-mongering"? - I read just fine
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are "lookig into" coding, you need to look a little farther, because you are not seeing all of it yet.

You ARE "walllowing in M*Modal land" whether you work for them or not. You seem to be focused on dragging them into the discussion. Why?

M*Modal may loom large in MT minds, but few people in coding know or care who they are. They just don't figure in HIM, except to the few who use them for transcription contracts, and their track record with that is so poor that anyone who used them for coding would have to be crazy.

There is more to coding than the job you think you see.

No one will use M*Modal for coding? - MR
[ In Reply To ..]
No one here is fear-mongering, just linking to information on coding (because this is a coding board and ANY news is relevant). I think people are mentioning M*Modal/Squid because they're the first ones sinking their tentacles into coding. No one says they're taking over coding and putting people out of jobs for goodness' sake. Just that they are entering the field.

As for no one will ever use M*Modal...too late.

Parkland Hospital (Dallas, TX) selects M*Modal for cloud-based coding: Parkland Hospital has selected the company to provide advanced cloud-based coding technology solutions through M*Modal Fluency for Coding, part of a new cohesive line of clinical solutions. M*Modal Fluency for Coding uniquely combines computer-assisted coding and powerful workflow management tools to manage current workflow demand while creating preparedness for the transition to ICD-10. M*Modal’s Fluency for Coding technology reviews the entire medical record and makes code suggestions for the coder based on the context within each provider’s documentation.

Actually it happened above - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
Someone was excited about a coding career and someone else wrote a reply, 'until it goes to India' - so you can't say that nobody is saying...someone just did. That's fearmonging.
Then why not respond to that poster? - MR
[ In Reply To ..]
But the insults and name-calling, "zombie cult member"?! were directed to one who simply posted a link/info. You can justify it all you want, but the insults and over-reaction speaks volumes. I've come to my own conclusions as to motive. *Done responding*
Parkland - another coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
To me, (a taxpayer who pays into Parkland and a coding student), a contract with Parkland means little. Parkland is a hot mess and there are some desperate attempts being made to save it. This is not a contract to provide coding for a major, fiscally-healthy healthcare system in my area. This example doesn't prove the poster's seeming point that MM is a huge threat.

It seems to me that Parkland is only still around because it is where people in our area go when they have no insurance, especially people who are here in our country illegally. No one goes there by choice. I saw a news story a while back where there were women delivering babies in the hallways.

Parkland is also bleeding money. They have huge issues with fines, the taxpayers who support it (it is the big public hospital in Dallas) are upset because the hospital issues mean a tax increase. I seem to remember that the pharmacy department was nearly shut down over enormous narcotic thefts which kept occuring.

Here are just a small portion of the news stories about rampant coding errors, safety violations, theft, etc.(these issues are still coming up, even with the MM contract)

I think you misunderstood what that said - Actual Coder
[ In Reply To ..]
Computer-assisted coding does not DO the coding. It "reads" the documentation to pick up things it then converts into codes. Those are then presented TO A CODER. The CODER does the actual cooding.

Non-coders think coding is the first part of that--looking at the list of diagnoses or the procedures and plastering in a code for each one. They thnk there is a code for each, like stock numbers in a catalog. They think you see X disease or Y procedure, look it up alphabetically, copy the number onto the claim, and prance off to your coffee break.

That isn't the job, but we have explained what the job is until all of us are sick of typing it. If you are so bull-headed, paranoid, or intellectually limited that you cannot understand or educate yourself, so be it.

That press release might sound impressive, but I know what they are talking about, so it sounds like typical self-serving bloviation to me.

It also sounds like Parkland is in such dire straits that they are willing to serve as a guinea pig, and I would not doubt that they are getting this for free or reduced cost.
It is serious bloviation. Also, anything free or at reduced cost almost always fails - Agree with you totally. LOL
[ In Reply To ..]
Any time you hear of these heavily-promoted, self-serving bloviations, as you put it, you know that someone is more interested in PR than common sense. They also know that chances are it's not going to work. It's just a trial to see if anyone will fall for it.

That's why you're probably right about the free or reduced cost. That's typical when PR people are running things. They promote like crazy before time runs out and someone pulls the plug on them. They get paid for promoting, not for solving problems.
Google CAC. It was an EXAMPLE. Here's another... - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
No one is saying the world is coming to an end! Sheesh. Just that technology is ever-changing and it is of course important to keep up with how it affects the field of coding. Because this is a CODING BOARD. Unlike some here, I think people are smart enough not to be struck by "fear" or "paralyzed" by just keeping up with info about the industry.

Parkland was an EXAMPLE (another is Cooper below), as M*Modal is an EXAMPLE of a company developing a Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC)program. From this article, EXAMPLES of others are 3M, Cerner, CodeRyte, Dolbey, OptumInsight, PlatoCode, Precyse and QuadraMed. Or I guess all these companies implementing CAC programs are simply "bloviating"? Nope, not convinced.

"As they prepare to convert to ICD-10, nearly half of providers nationwide are planning to purchase an inpatient computer-assisted coding (CAC) solution within the next two years, according to a new report from KLAS."

http://www.healthcarepayernews.com/content/icd-10-looming-providers-look-computer-assisted-coding

And the MQ/M*Modal Cooper example:

April, 13, 2011 – MedQuist Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: MEDH), a leading provider of medical transcription services and technology-enabled clinical documentation workflow solutions, today announced that it has been awarded a contract by Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, a leading academic medical center, to provide computer-assisted coding technology and outsourced coding services.

Cooper selected MedQuist based on its ability to demonstrate both ICD-10 readiness as well as the streamlined workflow features built in to the CodeRunner™CAC technology platform – including automatic chart assignment and automatic quality assurance – which enable complete, accurate coding in a rapid, efficient manner. The addition of outsourced coding services expands Cooper’s current partnership with MedQuist for transcription outsourcing services.

MedQuist’s transcription solutions feed clinical documents directly into CodeRunner™CAC – speeding the coding process and helping providers to obtain reimbursement faster.

“After partnering with MedQuist to help manage our speech recognition and transcription needs and seeing CodeRunnerâ„¢CAC in action, it was clear that MedQuist has the optimal mix of advanced technology, coding expertise, and knowledgeable staff to help us be completely prepared for ICD-10 as well as meet today’s challenges of rising coding volumes and coder shortages,” stated Marti Heesen-May, director of Health Information Management for Cooper.

“We are proud to partner with such a prestigious organization and are honored that Cooper has chosen to expand its partnership with MedQuist to include coding technology and service,.” says Maryagnes Marek, vice president of Coding and HIM Compliance at MedQuist. “This agreement demonstrates that MedQuist is the vendor of choice to speed revenue cycles, reduce denials and meet the complexity of the expanded code sets that ICD-10 will bring in 2013.”
Still another example of the bloviation these large MTSOs always exhibit - You forgot one
[ In Reply To ..]
This kind of thing happens with them all the time. You forgot the other big MTSO who practices bloviation, the word of the week!
You still are not gettng it - Looking forward to being employed forever
[ In Reply To ..]
CAC is computer ASSISTED coding, not "coder replacement coding." Coders will still be needed.

The software will just relieve coders of having to flap through a book to find the codes, which most of us will welcome. That is the part that slows us down.

You are thinking that will reduce the number of codes needed by improving their efficiency and you may be right. But, there is a shortage of coders, with almost 30% of coding jobs going unfilled AND a projected shortage increase in 2014 when ICD-10 is implemented.

We also know that the software industry has a tendency to overestimate and overstate the capabilities of its products. They are still tooting the VR horn when it has been shown that the accuracy and effectiveness of it is unlikely to improve further. Doctors usually dislike it and MTs see just how ludicrous the claims of improved efficiency are.

Software still cannot think. Coding is thinking and making complex judgements.

Regardless, there are jobs in coding that do not perform THAT job. There will be more auditors and documentation specialists required, because somebody still has to verify accuracy and somebody has to get doctors to document so that the software can read it. And so that includes everything necessary to optimize coding.

You will also notice that those products mention workflow management and ICD-10. The bulk of those products is revenue cycle management and software to help with conversion to ICD-10. That is no threat to coders.
Prancing- LOL! - another coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
Coding feels more like The Amazing Race, a complex scavenger hunt, deciphering a code, and sometimes a wild goose chase.

There's no prancing in coding. LOL

Parkland is a hot mess. Everyone from Dallas knows that. They do have a good burn unit and I'm glad that people have a place to go. SO many issues, though. People with other options stay away.

[ In Reply To ..]
The OP said that there were not too many of those jobs around. Nobody said that there weren't any jobs around. You would just need to find out if there were jobs like that in your area, or take a chance. There just aren't a lot of cancer registrars, at least not as many as there are coders, for instance. Are you looking for a fight, or were you sincerely asking for clarification?
i was very sincere - need out of MT

It's been a long long day and I may have just misread.. I am researching coding, for example, but also read up on cancer registrar. There are a few openings in Dallas, but not even as much as coding...lots of thinking to do, that is for sure!
Good luck with your decision-making. - Lots of thinking for sure
[ In Reply To ..]
It does take a lot of thinking to keep from making mistakes. If anyone tries to fast-talk you into any courses, stop in your tracks and hang up on them or delete their blogs/e-mail. Don't allow yourself to be pressured. You don't have to decide this week or this month. Give your decision the careful thought it deserves. Anything worthwhile will still be around when you're ready.
Hey- I'm in Dallas sm - Another coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
And I'm a coding student. Dallas has a tough job market right now. Check out pharmacy tech jobs too (you have to pass the state exam, but that wouldn't be hard for an MT). Parkland seems to be hiring a lot of people (I know, I know, but it's a start). Good luck to you. Something wonderful is just around the corner.

Course - Another coding student
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm taking several courses (mainly Andrews)and working toward a CCS certification and beyond. My birthday is coming up, so I hear you about age. I'm just going to keep trying to learn, to network, and to figure out which jobs I can plug my skill set into.

I fell for a diploma mill/bogus certification course one time and paid stupid tax on it. $5000 wasted, and that's a huge amount of money to my family. Yes I'm bitter about it and I will not give money to "educators" again without proof of results, such as an excellent reputation and students who actually can pass certification exams and get great jobs in what they went to school for). So please be careful in which courses you choose! This board has great advice and I'm glad that you are reading through it.

As long as I stay away from wastes of time and money like that experience was, I figure I'm doing ok.
You sound very wise - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I wouldn't think of shortcutting my coding education. Andrews covers what you need to know for credentials. That's the important thing. Without credentials, you might as well not have studied coding at all.

If you do not know the job market . . . - Questions for you
[ In Reply To ..]
What do cancer registrars do? Where do they work? How many would you find in a city like Dallas? What is their professional organization and what do they require for education? How many cancer registrars are there nationwide? Per state?

The key here is that they work in cancer registries, not clinics, and maybe not even in smaller hospitals. There may be one registry at a large medical center. If you have 3 such places in your city, maybe that is 3 or 4 jobs.

It is far easier to get a job as a coder because there are just more jobs. You do not need an associate's degree in cancer registrar that might take 3 or more years part-time, either. The upper end of the coding salary scale is higher, too.

CR is fine, but I would not want to try to find a job doing it.

then please - get going

[ In Reply To ..]
I was an MT for decades, have been transcribing acute care and diagnostic and interventional radiology for the past 10 years, started and completed the AAPC course in August and am now waiting for my certification testing results.

I would be afraid to do it that way without the ability to pass the CCS - Not being critical of you at all

[ In Reply To ..]
Getting a job with just a CPC has been talked about on here quite a bit. It just doesn't happen very often. You need the CCS. If you have both, that's even better. Are you planning on taking another course to prepare for the CCS or do you already have a job based on the CPC? Again, I'm not being critical.

CPC-H - get going

[ In Reply To ..]
I took the CPC-H course because it is also outpatient hospital and CPC is physician based. At the proctored exam, there were 14 people taking the CPC exam and I was the only one taking the CPC-H exam. Yes, I would much prefer CCS but it will take two years before I can attempt that certification exam.
