Hi everyone. I hope you are all having a good start to this week. I was informed today that I will be required to train to do voice recognition editing. I am very, very apprehensive. My company is willing to pay per hour while I am learning this but is editing a hard thing to learn ?? I appreciate any feedback you can give me. Thank you and if this post is in the wrong place, I am sorry. Thanks again.

It has taken me forever to learn even the basics and there's no way I can live on what I'm making. Twice as much work and three times less pay.

IMO, go through the training... - Learn what you can on their dollar.

especially since they are willing to pay hourly during the training.

Is it hard to learn? I think that depends on the program and trainer, but you won't know until you at least give it a try, so I say take a deep breath and dive in.

Personally, I hate VR because I have yet to work on a platform that has increased my production much. However, there are people who post about their successes and that they like VR. Who knows? You may be one of those lucky ones.

Anytime anyone wants to teach you something on their dime, take them up on it.

Remember, at its very base, editing is proofreading. You already know how to do that. Where the issue comes in is not in the proofreading, it's in the CORRECTING. Many of us are accustomed to making corrections on the flow. We're in the groove, in the zone, and it's natural to those of us who've done this a while. The problem with VR is that every time you find a correction, you have to train your brain to react differently than it does when you transcribe. Good companies will teach you how to edit not using the mouse and this is done (aka sold) so you can be faster w/o taking your hands off the keyboard.

Lucky they are paying you to train and learn. Nothing really in 'learning VR'other than, I think as the previous poster who said you have to re-train your brain. Do not know who came up with it that it is easier, faster and should be paid less is a total injustice. We definiely need a government research group formed to do EVERY report type, every dictator from every state, and every different VR program, then let's see the line counts and the QA from an English professor!

I was wondering, is anybody making any money at all on voice? I keep hearing just minimum or maybe a little more. I call minimum wage 7.50 to 8.00 an hour. My experience with it was at one point I was told that I hadn't made enough for minimum and they had to do make-up pay. So how is everybody's experience with voice? I got switched to another acct (not my idea) and it has 24 pages of rules and I don't get paid training pay to learn this new acct. So I went from making 450 lines per hour to 160 lines per hour so in essence, making around $6.00 an hour and the QA's gripe when you don't spend your time looking up something through the 24 pages of new acct rules. I'm infuriated that the quota to keep benefits is the same as it was before voice recognition. I'm KILLING myself to try to keep up to maintain health insurance and just can't do it. With 96% plus voice recognition reports and half pay from straight typing, I'm losing health care benefits. SO UNFAIR!!! ...

Have to learn VR soon. What if a report comes to you and there were no corrections to be made, does MT still get paid for the lines on the report or do you only get paid for straight typing and then if report has errors you just get paid for those corrections. I have read the horror stories over and over about voice recognition and was literally scared to death to take the plunge and try it. I recently got hired on at a large company where my account is about 50/50. It took a bit of getting used to, but have found that I really can edit faster than I can type, and actually enjoy the break from straight typing. Does anyone know if the voice recognition part of EPIC is like eScription? During the short period of time I had to use eScription, we were not allowed to recast sentences, etc. I honestly don't know how we are going to handle the ESLs when we move to that platform. We have been doing straight typing but I have to recast a lot of sentences. I was talking to a physician assistant today and she said when she was working in a hospital, she couldn't believe what kind of reports came out when doctors were dictating on voice recognition without having transcriptionists type them up afterwards.
