Copying ESP onto disc - anon

Posted: Apr 03, 2010

I'm trying to copy my ExText ESP word expander onto a disc.  Everytime I try, it says "please insert disc into drive D" even when I have one in.  Does anybody know why it won't copy?  Thank's

..insert disc into drive D -pb: disc not recognized? - Jake

Post P.S. Be sure the disc is writable and also that the drive accepts writable discs. I tried to write to a DVD on an old Toshiba XP, but it only had a writable CD drive, not a writable DVD drive although it would play DVDs.

P.S. I wrote all of the below info and then found this site that seemed an easy start for your troubleshooting, if the situation applies to your system: http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_can_i_fix_my_hp_cdromdvd_drive_glitch.html
I did a walk-through of the steps, but I have Windows 7 and didn't see a "settings" tab, but maybe you have it in XP.

The other simple fix to a problem sometimes is to be sure your system is updated with the latest Microsoft operating system updates and to be sure you have the latest driver for your CD-ROM or DVD drive.

Before doing any fixin', set a system restore point.

(The start of my reply is below. Best wishes, J.)

Hi, I believe you'll have to give more information, such as are you writing to a CD-R/RW or a DVD-R/RW and is your operating system (OS) Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 or a MAC system and have you installed all of the latest updates (for ex., are you using Windows XP SP3, if you use XP)? And, is your computer a Toshiba, Dell, etc.? Are you using specific software to burn or copy the expander file to the disc or are you using your OS's on-board software? Was your computer able to recognize the drive D on previous occasions? And it might be that the problem isn't due to ExText, so you might get more help by going to Google and searching for a solution on a technology forum instead, which is basically what I've given, since I don't know ExText.

I've pasted what I found, which is where I'd start for myself, but maybe you'll get a direct solution from another MT. (I hope you do or did.)

First there's a Microsoft (MS) search:
Go to Advanced Search: http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 and enter your phrase "insert disc into drive D" (no quotes needed). Look at MS's choices. Also, near the bottom of the page, MS goes into pbs with 3rd-party software and CD writing (in case you're using CD or DVD burning 3rd-party software and not MS's native capabilities).

There's this from MS: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279157 (A "Description of CD-R and CD-RW recording in Windows XP"; posted 2007)

And then there's this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818733
(Windows XP does not recognize a DVD-RW disc; posted 2007)

Again from MS, but this pb is that the CD/DVD device is not recognized as recordable and the solution involves editing the registry so only try this fix with great caution and create a restore point first (create a restore point before any of these): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529
(CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device; Oct 2008).

Outside of MS's sites:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/322/322745.html
Perhaps reversing this suggested fix, i.e., checking to be sure it IS enabled, would help: "Disable the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service". This site suggests disabling a MS service that might be conflicting with the 3rd-party software of Adobe.

See my Post P.S. and P.S. above (start there). Thanks, J.

Disk Versus Disc - Degenerative Disk/disc Disease?
