NEW PARTICIPANT LOOKING FOR INFORMATION - bkross

Posted: Mar 08, 2010

i am going to start classes soon on coding and billing., a co-worker of mine were talking today and she was telling me about at home transcription., the coding and billing i also want to do at home.  She was telling me that this site is really good for findinig out information about beginning transcription and possibly what schools are the best that would not rip you off or lead you astray, also, what companies are the best., how do you know which ones are on the up and up and when you work will pay you.

Also, wanted to know if this is truly a lucrative business to be in., what is the pay rate, how does that work.  The equipment; it is expensive, and last are the companies around in the areas that we live in or online in another state.

Thanks to anyone who could give some advice.

I would stick with the billing and coding. You will read on this page a lot about newbies trying to break into this field and it is almost impossible. The companies all want 2-3 years of experience. I wish that I would have looked into the MT career more before I stuck the money I did into school. The schools tell you that the companies will hire you anyway without the experience....NO THEY WILL NOT!!! I have had several careers and this is the first one that I maybe giving up on getting into it. So read on this board before you make that decision. Sorry to rain on your parade but I wish someone would have told me this.

Remember that you are only speaking from your own experience - See message

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience and haven't been able to get or keep an MT job, but your experience is just that, your experience. I'm even sure that you have lots of company. There are also plenty of us who could give the other side of the story, a successful one. People on message boards overgeneralize. If one person has a bad time, they assume everyone has had the same experience. We haven't.

It's no different than a friend of mine who got out of law school and couldn't find a job and thought everyone was failing at it. They aren't. We aren't.

Some do well and some don't, just like with anything else. I've been watching some new MTs on the job and they are doing just fine. There are plenty of people who got into MT and failed and also plenty who are succeeding.

But it has gotten much tighter. - LK

I have been an MT for 5 years, and when I got out of school in 2005, companies would willingly hire newbies from the top 3 schools. I received a call from my school about a month before my graduation and was told that a large MTSO wanted to hire 5 of their top new crop of graduates, and did I want to go to work for them. I called the MTSO and they hired me on the spot, at a higher per line rate that some experienced MTs are being paid now. No interview, no test, no job hunt. The job was literally handed to me on a silver platter. That does NOT happen now. Things have changed so much in 5 years that it makes my head spin.

It it TOUGH out there, even for experienced MTs trying to change jobs. It could improve in the future, and it could also get much worse. Anyone who enters MT schooling now had better realize that they may or may not be employable when they get out.
It's tough for 'some' experienced MTs out there - We are not all the same

It's just too easy to assume that everyone else has the same experience you have, especially when people who are doing well don't post that much because they are working.
LK - True, not all the same.

Actually, that has not been my experience at all. I've worked full time continuously since I graduated, make good money, and am with a great company. I've never experienced unemployment as an MT and am quite happy in this field. But I do see what's going on around me, and there are many more MTs now having a tough time getting work. The small company I work for just had its first layoff in many years of being in business due to workload going down due to EMR.

Any New Information About TTS?
Mar 21, 2010

Hi, I am speaking with TTS about a job.  The thing that I am concerned about is they said in their introduction that, "Production time is tracked off the technology system and monitors the time you are actually in the document working (hands on the keyboard or foot on the pedal).  If you are idle in excess of 4 minutes the time stops tracking.  You must remain actively working.  If you are researching etc, give it 3 minutes." I am assuming this means that you if you get ...

Specific Information For Your TAA
Mar 09, 2010

I just spoke with my TAA representative and he told me when you apply for UI through TAA, use the Medquist TAW#72153.  This is the official, approved number given to our beloved company proving they are getting rid of our American jobs to Indian workers.  The most important paragraph I found in the approved petition was: "All workers of MedQuist, Inc., Mount Laurel, New Jersey including workers at home sites throughout the United States, who became totally or partially separated from ...

Complete Information In Job Ads
Sep 22, 2010

It would be helpful and save time on both ends and lots of paperwork and hemming and hawing if the line rate, hours, bennies, requirements, etc., were given with each ad (I know some do this already)  and then people could apply with that knowledge in hand and present themselves accordingly.  The correct applicant would be applying for the correct job.  Win/win.  I mean, what's the big secret?  Since we are all lumped together no matter how many years of experi ...

SoftScript Information Please??
Sep 24, 2010

Hello!  I am thinking of applying at SoftScript, I'm a QA.  I was wondering what people currently thought of this company.  I've learned if the MTs aren't happy, something's wrong!  I certainly respect MTs and the opinions you can offer because you know what's going on more than anyone else!  I'm particularly interested in the type of insurance, as that's the main point for me.  Also, any info on schedules they do would be great, t ...

Desperate For Information!
Nov 29, 2010

I am an MT with 15+ years experience. Had to leave the field to be a caregiver for several years and now, 5 years later, want to return to working. From what I am reading, I am out of luck. I've searched high and low trying to find out about refresher courses or what I would need to do to get back into the field. It seems most companies want anywhere from 1 to 5 years of RECENT experience. Does anyone know if there is a way that I can brush up on my skills or any helpful input? It is really ...
