Got a chance at a gvt job - sm

Posted: Apr 14, 2014

Need to put resume together and get out..Pays to have friends that do the hiring too..Really, really not looking forward to getting up, getting dressed, and traveling..But this horse is almost dead, think it is time for bigger and better things.

Why the thumbs down people - sm

I'm having a really hard time making this decision, believe it or not..There are a lot of personal things that come into play that I must make arrangements for or try and suck it up here and hope it gets better. Any ideas or feedback would be helpful.

Just ignore the likes/dislikes. Some people - SM

have nothing better to do than antagonize others since their life is so boring.

The thumbs down could have come from a comment that was made in your post - nn

"It helps to have friends that do the hiring too." Umm, this is a government position. I have worked in State Civil Service before I became an MT, and there are procedures that need to be followed, whether it be a State or Federal job.

You do realize that you have to take and pass a Civil Service examination?

Even if you "pass" the examination with a score of 100, there are extra points that would be given to former civil service employees, as well as veterans. In my case, for example I am a former state civil service employee, as well as the widow of a veteran, therefore, with those two criteria in mind, in essence, I would literally receive a score of 110, thereby, putting myself ahead of you in the interview process. Veterans are awarded an extra 5 points for their service, so any veteran who scored 100, would actually score 105, again, thereby putting them ahead of you.

Lastly, there are "procedures" that have to be followed during the interview process. The top three candidates are sent letters indicating the open position. If those three candidates are interviewed, and they can decline a job offer if one is made to them. This can also be done on behalf of the person that is doing the interviewing; stating that they feel for example that "John Smith" is not a good candidate.

The interviewing process then goes to the next three candidates in line. I know when I worked in the state civil service area of things, I was generally in the top three candidates after I had tested for secretarial/clerical positions and you are made aware of "your standing on the roster," so for example, if you are #15 or 20 on the list, then that many people will need to be interviewed ahead of you.

Just because you "have friends," doesn't guarantee anything, and it could be grounds for possible termination on their part if it is found out they hired you over someone who in essence had a higher score or who was more qualified.

Good luck to you! - NM

I was civil service for 13 years and had to quit, and I've been trying so hard to get back in. I'd do practically anything and have put applications in for practically everything to get back in. I loved it so much! You're treated so well and the benefits are GREAT! Good luck!

Thats good to know thank you - sm

Really don't know why I am even mulling this over, it should be a no brainer.

That is probably - the reason

For the dislikes. You have a chance at a govt job that probably pays well with holidays off and probably lots of other perks, PLUS know the person hiring so there is a good chance the job is yours and you are complaining about having to get up early, get dressed and travel? A lot of us would not hesitate to say yes!

Didn't mean to seem whiney..I have some medical problems that make the thought of committing to the "daily routine" sometimes very difficult. I don't want to let this person down should he come through for me. But, I am going to try.
True! Sign me up. I'd take that job in a hot minute! - clb

I'm trying to get VA/gov jobs as we speak. If this is your one and only chance to get out of MT, TAKE IT!! That's probably why all the dislikes.

jealousy maybe - they did that with the coding students too

Need A Chance!
Feb 20, 2012

I am a 40+ year old transcriptionist who has been self employed for 15+ years.  I am a hard worker and good at what I do.  Unfortunately my accounts are drying up because of the "Obama Kickback" to physicians who are willing to convert to EMR and I need to get a job on-line.  But as I am finding out no one is willing to give me a chance because I have no acute care experience. I have worked for all kinds of providers: urologist, pediatrician, endocrinologist, but none of that seem ...

Fair Chance Or Not?
Mar 03, 2012

Was just wondering if you seasoned MT's think 5 weeks on a new job is a fair chance for a fairly new MT? New platform to be learned, and the dictations were from a big pool with a lot of different doctors, though not many ESL's, and QA was pretty picky. Any opinions on this? ...

Chance To Get Out Of MModal
Oct 21, 2013

Unfortunately, because no one can come close to the low cost of health insurance that M*Modal has, I can't justify switching jobs. WHYYYY does my dear husband have to work for a tiny company that doesn't offer benefits??? WHYYYY, with everything else that is horrible about M*Modal, why do they have to actually offer decent insurance options compared to everything else out there? I can't, in good conscience, walk away from my current situation to one where we would take a big fi ...

No Chance Of A Raise
Oct 27, 2013

As an MT, there's no chance of getting a raise or promotion, and so there's little incentive or motivation, especially being paid pennies per line. Yet, they expect you to participate in continuing education, which takes additional time and perhaps even money. What a joke. They don't expect crew members at McDonald's to take extra time off work hours, and they get paid the same amount. No point in complaining, I know, but it's so ridiculous. ...

The Idiot Is Back For One Last Chance
Apr 25, 2010

Hi, I really do concur with "Raining Pennies" that it is very important to read the posting guideines. Otherwise, if you inadvertently breach the guidelines, you will wind up getting banned.  I did breech the posting guidelines and I did get banned, but I'm back for one more chance at staying within the "posting guidelines." "Raining Pennies" was correct about how I breached the guidelines.  I quoted some language that I should not have quoted.  And I apologize to the owner ...

To Oracle/OTI MTs, Do You Think There Is Any Chance We Will Be Paid On Friday? Sm
Jun 15, 2011

I have only been there for about 6 weeks, but the payroll lady seems to get the checks out lightning fast.  However, I realize the 15th is happening in the middle of the week, so payday might not be until Monday.  I was just hoping ... thinking maybe some of you "veterans" had seen it paid that quickly, before the weekend.  Regardless, I love it there. :-) Thanks! ...

I Want To Be A Coder So Bad But No One Will Give Me A Chance....aaaghhh
Mar 07, 2013

I spent two years getting my degree and then my RHIT and then my CPC, but I cannot get a job and am beyond frustrated!!!!!  I worked in medical billing before I became an MT, but that was years ago, but that doesn't even matter because I get the same answer every time I apply, "no experience, sorry, we can't hire you." Boooo!!!!!!  I feel like I've wasted two years of life putting myself through school, working nights, spending time away from my family...for what...to be ...
