Does anyone feel comfortable posting what they will receive in UE? - anon

Posted: Apr 06, 2013

I'm FT, been with MM for 15 years.  I'm a single mom of one teenager, my average income is ~around $1200/mo.  Does that make a difference?   I'm just trying to figure out if I got "the call", if the UE I (or any of us) receive is enough to pay bills with.

If it's close to what I earn I will be OK.  If it's $200/mo I will be in huge trouble.

This was years ago that I lost my job, but the amount that I received for unemployment was probably about 2/3 to 3/4 the amount I was making and it was livable. After a few months, I was able to find a part-time job and that enabled me to have an income and still collect some unemployment. By that time, I was making just about the same as I had been at my full-time job (with the UE and my part-time job together). After a couple months of that, I was offered a full-time position and was able to get off UE.

I know how you feel. At the time, I just had my first baby and was terrified. My husband worked, but he also was in school and he only worked part time. UE was a life saver. It's never fun to lose your job, but it's nice to know you can make it through. Good luck and hopefully you will not be getting the call.

Thanks, that really helps :) - anon

I think we're all a little scared right now and hearing "It will be OK" can make a big difference so thank you for that.

2/3 to 3/4 what I earn could be doable. I own my own car and my bills are very low, but right now my bills are almost exactly matching my income. I already get food stamps so I'm already in the "system" and if I lost my job those would go up a lot.

This has been a huge wake up call for all of us and it seems like no one is immune - there doesn't seem to be any "demographic" that is being targeted. I don't think there is one of us here who hasn't asked "what if that was me", in the last 24 hours. :(

Good luck to you too ... they may not be done yet but I hope none of us get the call.

You're welcome. SM - poster above

As a family, we have been through it all. My husband has lost his job twice now (recently in January) and he has had to collect UE once already as well. It doesn't get easier when it happens to you more than once, nor does it get harder, but it does help to know what to expect. You just take it day by day. Every time something like this has happened, something better has come along for both of us.

It is based on how much you made over a period of time. I am - Me

unemployment . They automatically withhold 10% federal taxes and I have them withhold another 10% for state taxes. After taxes I get 275.00 a week. That barely covers my mortgage. I'm thankful to have it, but I'm wandering if I'm going to deplete my savings making up the difference before I find a job. UE isn't meant to be enough to be comfortable. The amount also decreases depending how long you have been on it. They do allow you to make a certain amount before they start deducting benefits. I can make $62 a week and any amount over that they will deduct from the $275. You also don't get any benefits the first week after you file.

Thank you, that helps a lot - anon

In my case, comfort = having a roof over my head. I don't have anything fancy, I live in a small apartment and drive a 1993 car. No dinners out, and no luxuries. My biggest fear is being homeless because I don't have any family, etc to turn to if things go south. Just me, I'm all I have.

Thank you again for your information, that helps a lot. I think we're all just a little bit scared right now.

all you have to do is this... - sm

go to your state's Dept of Labor site. There, it will tell you how they calculate your benefit amount. It is usually based on what you earned during the "base period" defined by your state - usually something like the last 5 quarters (excluding the one we're in).

It doesn't matter whether you have worked 15 years or 25 years. The benefit amount is based on what you earned during the last few quarters. Your state DOL site will have the calculation formula.

You do not receive a larger benefit based on the number of years you have worked for the company. Again, the benefit is based on earnings during a prescribed period.

What she just said plus it varies a LOT from state to state - Just go to your states site like she said (nm)

Most Comfortable Headphones

Which headphones do you like the best in terms of comfort and quality? Some of the ones that fit inside the ears, the earbuds, make my ears sore. My boss suggested the noise-canceling kind that fit over the ears, but they are very expensive and they also look like they were be very heavy to wear. Any recommendations would be great, thank you. ...

Comfortable Headphones
Oct 18, 2009

I've always used just cheap stereo headphones but I want to try some of the ones that are made specifically for transcription. The problem is the kind that fit inside my ears can hurt, the ones that are more rounded buds and have foam on them. What headphones do you recommend that are comfortable inside the ear? I tried some recently from a fellow MT and I think they were made by Lanier but I can't remember, but they seemed comfortable. Is Lanier the best also for sound quality? I loo ...

What Do You Do To Make Yourself Comfortable
Jul 30, 2010

I get soo uncomfortable sitting for at least 8 hours every day.  My right arm and hand just ache/sore constantly, and my fingers, especially on my right hand, are really getting painful.  I sit with my keyboard on my lap (on a pillow), sit with a pillow underneath and behind me.  My heel even hurts from using the foot pedal.  I'm wondering if a left hand keyboard would work for me, or an ergonomic.  I've used an ergonomic before (it broke) and didn't recal ...

Making Your Workstation Comfortable?
Nov 11, 2010

Hi ladies, I'm coming to realize that even though I've been searching and searching for another job, I'm going to be MT'ing for some time to come.  I'm rather uncomfortable while typing all day, from my hands, arms, bottom, ears from the headphones, my foot from hitting the pedal.  I have pillows under my foot and bottom and even my back and it doesn't help as much as I would like.  I'm using a regular Microsoft keyboard and mouse, neither real ...

For All MTs Who Did Not Receive Any Sign Of Appreciation
May 21, 2010

I have read this proclamation, signed by President Ronald Reagan many times, but it never loses it meaning and reminds me that once-upon-a-time, all MTs were regarded with the respect and appreciation that this proclamation describes. Any MTs Receive Letter From Coporate Bothering
Jan 09, 2010

TAA (Trade Adjustment Act) -- given the steep drop in pay for some MTs/MMEs, I would think MQ corporate would be glad to notify us that many MTs can apply for consideration, even if not approved.  Thanks to all MTs that provided this information.  MQ should have been the FIRST to inform us, and information should have been just as official as that last nonsense letter from corporate about what a wonderful job we are all doing (they meant lining their pockets while many MTs are receiv ...

Does Everyone At Nuance Receive Metric Reports
