What do you do to make yourself comfortable - at your desk?

Posted: Jul 30, 2010

I get soo uncomfortable sitting for at least 8 hours every day.  My right arm and hand just ache/sore constantly, and my fingers, especially on my right hand, are really getting painful.  I sit with my keyboard on my lap (on a pillow), sit with a pillow underneath and behind me.  My heel even hurts from using the foot pedal.  I'm wondering if a left hand keyboard would work for me, or an ergonomic.  I've used an ergonomic before (it broke) and didn't recall it making a huge difference.

Any tips on how I can make myself more comfortable?

Kinesis keyboard.

Downview desk - view monitor through glass - prevents the "chin-jutting" posture that crunched cervical spine & caused arm & hand numbness.

Knees lower than hips. Encourages straight spine & discourages rounded back that goes with "chin jutting"

Pedal on a foam pad used for gardening to cushion heel. Switch R/L foot periodically.

No problems in 7 years.

I have to have my Kinesis (ergo) keyboard. Not all ergos are equal. It is worth the investment (IMO) and of course tax deductible. I use ergo gloves, which although I don't really understand why they help so much, they do. I have a fan on me, water and often coffee beside. Cat often sleeps beside me. I have Bose noise-canceling headphones. A good chair. I get up very frequently and move around. Try to exercise 30-60 min a day, which I think helps whole body/mind. I also put the keyboard in my lap. I tried it on a pillow, but it made it too high and too hot. When my heel bothers me, I slip a beaded wrist rest or a slipper turned sideways under my heel. Because I wear bifocals, I put my monitor a bit lower than I used to (4-6 in lower). There is a lot of science behind the Kinesis. Got my first one on ebay (now have a backup too). You might check it out. Hope something helps. Contrary to what others think, it is hard sitting down all day...

I think it is standard for Kinesis to give you a 90-day "trial" on a new one. Don't like it, no charge, just send it back. It does take some effort to retrain yourself, which I was able to pretty much get done on one weekend off.

Try yoga between breaks. Gets the blood moving.

changing your habits - to help hand pain

It sounds like you will need to make a major change of some kind-- not just sitting a different way. You do not want to damage your right hand. It is too bad someone cannot observe you working to see what hand positions/actions you are doing. At my former workplace, when we went to VR, we actually had an occupational therapist to observe us and make recommendations. She saved a lot of us from disability, but we had to make a major and inconvenient change in the "home position" of our hands. Then we had to re-learn and work back up to speed. It was worth it. If I were you, and having that much pain, I would take myself and my keyboard to a therapist or hand doctor and let him/her make suggestions. I hope you can find something to help!

Thanks for the awesome - suggestions

I'm definitely going to look into that keyboard. Yes, my right arm and hand hurting so bad has me concerned. I try to pay attention to my posture and all, but I very well could be doing something wrong that's causing this pain.

Most Comfortable Headphones

Which headphones do you like the best in terms of comfort and quality? Some of the ones that fit inside the ears, the earbuds, make my ears sore. My boss suggested the noise-canceling kind that fit over the ears, but they are very expensive and they also look like they were be very heavy to wear. Any recommendations would be great, thank you. ...

Comfortable Headphones
Oct 18, 2009

I've always used just cheap stereo headphones but I want to try some of the ones that are made specifically for transcription. The problem is the kind that fit inside my ears can hurt, the ones that are more rounded buds and have foam on them. What headphones do you recommend that are comfortable inside the ear? I tried some recently from a fellow MT and I think they were made by Lanier but I can't remember, but they seemed comfortable. Is Lanier the best also for sound quality? I loo ...

Making Your Workstation Comfortable?
Nov 11, 2010

Hi ladies, I'm coming to realize that even though I've been searching and searching for another job, I'm going to be MT'ing for some time to come.  I'm rather uncomfortable while typing all day, from my hands, arms, bottom, ears from the headphones, my foot from hitting the pedal.  I have pillows under my foot and bottom and even my back and it doesn't help as much as I would like.  I'm using a regular Microsoft keyboard and mouse, neither real ...

I'm FT, been with MM for 15 years.  I'm a single mom of one teenager, my average income is ~around $1200/mo.  Does that make a difference?   I'm just trying to figure out if I got "the call", if the UE I (or any of us) receive is enough to pay bills with.  If it's close to what I earn I will be OK.  If it's $200/mo I will be in huge trouble.      ...

"Comfortable" Line Count
Feb 14, 2011

For those of you who work on production, how long did it take for you to be comfortable with the line count you're transcribing?    "Comfortable" may not be the appropriate word because the amount of money is never enough for the majority of us but enough to pay your bills and still some left over to treat yourself, vacation, save.  I'm still getting used to being paid on production and I don't mind it, but I still want to work on producing more to become comfortabl ...

Worried About Being Able To Even Make What I Used To Make Doing
Apr 11, 2011

I seem to be spending an awful lot of time in VR documents, so I am confused as to why I am getting paid less for them.  This stupid VR system types whatever it thinks it might be hearing and sometimes doesn't type anything at all.  I hate this VR.  I am up to 1800 lines but usually do 2200-2500 a day on straight transcription.  I don't know how I am going to feed my children.  I am a single mom and the head of household.  Believe me the child support isn& ...

I Seriously Don't Know How To Make This Better
Aug 24, 2011

I've been working with this company for over 90 days. The first 90 days was a paid internship. Paid hourly, minimum wage. I am now a full time employee...paid on production.   However, I can not even seem to make minimum wage while on production pay! It is driving me nuts and is very discouraging. I'm not sure where to point the finger.   I worked 8 hours, only took one 20 minute break to eat. Over those 8 hours, according to the employers data base, I did around 1200 lin ...
