15 More Work Days--Early Retirement Here I Come - kitty lady

Posted: Jul 02, 2013

15 days and early retirement.  Can't wait until I write my letter to MModal to tell them what I think of them--will not do any good and will probably give them a good laugh for the day.  Used to love this job, but now HATE it.  Social Security with penalty and working 25 hours making more money and will be the end of 65 hour work weeks to make ends meet.  VIRTUAL RETIREMENT PARTY!!!!!!

Sad thing is, my second job for the last 5 years has been in a grocery store as a customer service rep, self scan clerk, and cashier and making more money but hours were not regular enough to enable me to quit MModal. Now with social security and my guaranteed 25 hours a week will make more money than working full time at MModal. Really sad to think patient's are not more important than your groceries.

Congrats! Do you mind if I ask your age? Is this your Social Security? I would be VERY interested in checking into this myself! I'll be 60 in January and have done nothing but transcription for the last 40 years. I'm just about at the end of my rope with MModal.

I will be 62 July 16th. You have to be 62 for 30 days before social security clicks in, so I will be getting my first SS check in September but will be working part time. Early retirement costs you. In my case it is $200 a month but I am collecting on my husband's SS and leaving mine alone. Hate to give up the $200 but it is worth it in the long run.

I am replying to this forum as well regarding early retirement. I heard nothing but bad comments about MModal. I think a lot of the other services are following in their footsteps. I am 62 and will be taking Social Security next month. Can't wait.

This is not my business, of course, but I think you made the right decision! Congratulations, and enjoy your retirement!
One thing to be concerned about in SS early - retirement is if you continue
[ In Reply To ..]
to work, you cannot make but a certain amount each month or SS will make you pay back money. It is according to how much SS you draw. I waited until full retirement because I am horrible with math and there is no way I could see myself ever trying to figure out what I could make or not make and maybe having my money snatched away from me. I was so glad that I waited until full because I am still working and there is no ceiling on the amount I can make.

You can earn 1260 per month. I took that amount and divided it by 5 weeks because some months there are partial weeks. I then divided that number by what I make as an hourly wage and that told me how many hours I can work. I could take SS and not work, but I don't want to do that at this time. My husband's retirement and his SS is enough for us with some extra but I have some credit card bills that I am paying off which is why I am continuing to work. I figured I can work 25 hours a week which brings me under the 1260 a month you can earn. Husband is retired and I don't want to work the additional 4 years at a full time job when I can take early retirement.
Am only part time now but if I had to figure - out what you did the way
[ In Reply To ..]
you did, I know for a fact I would have to pay back. I absolutely suck when it comes to math and that would be a complete nightmare for me plus I do not want something/someone telling me how many hours/how much money I can make. Is the $1260 with any amount you would draw from SS or is that just with your particular situation? I was working part prior to taking SS, 24 hours per week, so glad no more full and on overdrive for me.

You can earn $15,000 a year if you draw early social security which comes out to $1260 before taxes. I will probably make more then the $15,000 this year between both jobs, so there is a special section that says you can make $1260 a month and not lose your SS. Next year you can make up to $15000 and not lose any SS. If I go over the $1260 a month by even $1.00 I lose the whole check for the next month which is why I divided the month by 5 weeks instead of 4 because some months there are 5 weeks in a month and at the end of the month there are usually a few extra days. That way I am covered. Need to keep a close watch on my weekly pay to not go over. I am lucky. I can adjust my hours as needed.

Congrats, Kitty Lady!!! - me

I have 43 days left before I take early retirement also. It's really sad that we will be making more from Social Security than working. Best of luck to you!!!

I know what you mean. I am taking early retirement in 1 month and it is sad that we will be making more through Social Security than these MTSO's pay us. It is a dying profession.

Early Retirement ?

Retired 10 Working Days Early
Jul 17, 2013

Well, after last thursday night such bad dictators and made no money--so just getting min wage, I finally retired 10 working days early.  So sad when you can make more money working 25 hours a week in a grocery store as a customer service rep, cashier, and working on self-scans.  Such a relief to get away from this company.  Hope you all have a good summer and I am out of here.  ...

About Retirement: Don't Do It If You Don't Have To
Apr 03, 2015

I'm not saying to stay on at a horrible job that you hate. Do something else if you need to, but retirement is not always as great as we've always told it would be. When I look around me, I see all the retired people wishing they had something to do, somewhere to go, and a little bit of money to spend. Their brains don't get a very good workout.  Stay active! Don't retire unless you have to. ...

Retirement Plus Still Typing PT

MTs:  I presently work for an outsource company which has sold its MT division to another outsource company.   I will be 62 yo come January.  I am to the point now of seriously thinking about taking early retirement and only working PT 20 hours a week. If I do that I would actually be making more money that way than I would be working the 50+ hours a week I do now.   The thing that I am concerned about is I would have no health insurance unless I pay for it out of my own poc ...

Transcription Vs Retirement
Nov 21, 2011

Has anyone faced this problem?  Worked at home many years in radiation oncology then because of by out from hospital I was transfered to medical transcription department for training. When I showed up for training I was told that they "didn't quite know what to do with me". Showed up for daily training only to be sent home because volume was low. Eventually, realized that they didn't want to train me so I decided to retire. Is there any recourse? ...

Benefits And Retirement?
Oct 20, 2013

My minimal wage MT job is offering benefits and retirement account. Wouldn't getting benefits not to mention retirement account eat further into the small-sum paycheck I get now so that it's questionable whether I can pay for food or rent? The way they offer benefits, you think they pay a "normal" amount of money. By the way, is it required to enroll in healthcare benefits now that there's a new healthcare law? ...

Medical Transcription After Retirement
May 21, 2012

I transcribed for over 40 years, and when I do test now, I usually test up to 95%, and that is just not good enough even for a company I previously worked for that went outsourcing after freezing us out of work.  I really loved transcribing and would do it again in a heartbear if I could get a good, steady part-time source.  Any suggestions or recommendations?  Thank you.  I am in Glendale, AZ if that will help.  ...

Part Time And Saving For Retirement
Dec 17, 2009

I'm thinking of going part time at my job so I can do something else on the side.  However, I won't be able to have a 401K or PTO.  I get medical and dental benefits through my husband's work, so that doesn't matter.  For any part timers out there, what do you do to save for retirement?  ...

Huge Numbers Of MTs Have Recently Hit Retirement Age
May 18, 2010

I've heard for maybe 10 years now that right now, 2010, is when vast numbers of MTs were supposed to hit retirement age and quit work. What is retirement age? I don't want to retire, but when does a person really need to retire even if they don't want to? ...
