Making work fun-needing to be challenged - Bored and need help!

I am so bored and unchallenged by my editing job. I feel like a monkey could do this. I have a degree in health information but this field sucks, honestly. I hate it. I want out but feel stuck in a rut with my whole work history being MT work. Getting into other parts of health information is so hard without certification. I am eligible to sit for my RHIT but it's been 5 years since I got my AAS so I forgot a lot of what I learned and studying for it seems overwhelming...worried I'd fail it.

Anyway, is there a way to make doing these reports fun and challenging? Does anyone have a game they play with it? Like so many reports in a certain time or focusing on learning all of the medical procedures, etc. while they work? I don't know! Anything!! I completely bought new everything for my work area and that didn't even help. I'm burned out!

People would kill for my job and often tell me how jealous they are of the position I have and it has it's good points but it's not intellectually stimulating to me whatsoever and I need to figure out a way to make it be! I plan on going back to school to change careers but what until then? My production is suffering because I can't focus and am so bored!

The rest are BORING, and medicine does not advance that fast that there is an interesting new procedure or instruments to learn all the time.

I guess it goes with the territory. I hear ya when you talk about being burned out. Most all of us are suffering from that. Day in and day out drudgery for beans.

This is a sedentary occupation to the extreme. Since more and more of the work is becoming editing with little straight typing, I have trouble staying awake and sometimes I'm bored to tears.

I switched to a split shift, 4 hours on then off for 2, then 4 more to finish. It helps a bit, but for me it might be time to move on after so many years.

Wow!!! I am in the exact same situation as you. I also have my AAS in Heatlh Information Managment,had my RHIT initially but didn't keep it active, and now also have all my work history in transcription, as I needed the flexibility while my kids were young, but now that they are getting older, I am also contemplating going back to get my RHIT again, but studying for it all over again is such a daunting task. I purchased a bunch of the updated books to study (used at really cheap prices) as it has been 7 years since I received my degree, but it is so hard to find time and I am feeling overwhelmed as well, but I think it would really be a good idea to get the RHIT back, as it opens a lot more doors and the future of the transcription industry is so shaky right now.

It is so nice to hear from somebody who is having the exact same experience as me, as I also get bored easily and would love to broaden my horizons in the HIT field and keep my education going.

Just have to ask, how much ASR do you do? Are you able to fly through at high speed without going back to proof and still getting strong audit? Do you have several dictators with several formats or a handful with all the same format? Just found out through the grapevine that someone was hired at my company at a higher cpl that I was offered. I have been there since June and was offered a low rate compared to most MTSO companies. But it did get me off the midnight shift at a different company, which I would have stayed with had I been given the opportunity to change shifts. How in the heck are you supposed to make any money doing SR? Is it possible? I make good money as a transcriptionist and have avoided SR up to now. Now my company is transitioning over and I'm contemplating running for the door. I don't see how it's possible to make any money when you get paid half the cpl that you would make for transcribing. Honest to Pete, this woman has no clue about pronunciation. A couple of reports ago she's reading a radiology report and says very clearly "primitive destruction" and then goes on to spell it "permeative." I was working on an account for the last 5 years and was averaging in ASR lines at 329-340 an hour with 100% audits. Then the work got slow and I was moved to another manager and another new account. Now my average ASR lines are around 170-180 an hour with 100% audits. At 175 ASR line rate an hour and being part-time, that is 175 x 0.4 a line which comes to 7.00 an hour.
