How much are you making? - speedy typist

Posted: Feb 21, 2010

Hey everyone.  I am just curious as to what everyone makes these days (if you are being paid by the line) and how long should you stay at that rate before you ask for more/raise your price?

I've been at 12 cents per line for the past 3.5 years and I don't know how much more I should ask for.  I don't want to ask for too much, yet I don't want to sell myself short.  I am just thankful to even have my job so I don't want to rub anyone the wrong way, especially in this economy, but, at the same time, I feel I deserve to make more by now.

Any helpful tips if you have been in this situation before would be appreciated, especially if you don't mind saying how much you get paid per line....Thank you!

Do you have your own accounts for this rate? - Molly

I make 9.5 cpl for a hospital with full benefits.

Yes, it is just me working for this practice from home. I have a contract with them, so there are no benefits. I pay my own taxes and health insurance out of pocket.

Yes, that's called IC. From my experience, 12 cpl is.... - Good luck

GREAT, especially in this day and age. The last IC side job I had was for 12 cpl through an MTSO. Since you know your accounts, you probably have a better idea. The one thing is - it doesn't hurt to ask but cautiously so you don't lose the account.
Do you have to supply all the equipment for dictation and transcription? - wondering?
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm slowly learning all of this, and the 12 CPL through the MTSO, that is pretty high through an MTSO right now isn't it? I'm making 8.5, but very easy accounts...

I just have the DSS Player, pedal, and my computer...thats really the only equipment I need.

9 cpl, which is not nearly enough to live on. That - is why Im lookin to get OUT. nm

how much - 1mt

[ In Reply To ..]
10 cpl for one MTSO and 9.5 cpl for another MTSO which I just started a couple months ago - both IC status. I would love to get 12 cpl. The MTSO that I've worked for for quite a few years will not pay any more than that; basically they say that can't because then they wouldn't make any profit. Yeah, right! Curious to know what state you're in.

Its just me. I don't work for a Transcription Company, so there is no middle man to make any profit. I'm just almost afraid to ask for more because I dont know what competitors are charging, they may work for less!

For those of you who work for MTSO, do you know how much the company charges them per line vs. what they pay you?

I am making 0.13 on an account that is my own - sm - HLINVA

and have been at this rate for 3 years now. This is the rate this MD has been paying for many years as I bought/took over the account from another MT who wanted to lessen her load. I do not plan to raise it as I expect if I do they will just go elsewhere. They have already cut back drastically on their dictation and actually went back to hand writing info in the charts instead of dictating. So already had a slash of 50% on this account as it is, rather not lose it altogether. I have plenty of work at my IC job so obviously I just work a little harder there to make up the difference though at a bit lower rate unfortunately.

Important distinction - grossing versus netting - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
People with their own businesses often mention the line rate they charge (gross), but that is never what they net, even before taxes, because there is no such thing as a "cost-free" business.

No one should operate a business of any kind without carrying a minimum of liability insurance appropriate to that business, for instance.

Time spent in billing, conversations with clients, fixing problems, delivery, etc., etc. are also costs, although usually unrecognized.

And of course there are costs for space, equipment, supplies, etc.

Although certain tax provisions seem to offset these costs, they really don't; they just reduce the gross income to a lower taxable income - the net before taxes - and that, divided by the total number of lines billed, is your net line rate before taxes which is what you would compare with a line rate paid to an employee...not the gross.

Agree with HLINVA - better stay where you are on price - MTinNC

[ In Reply To ..]
I am at .12/line and feel extremely lucky to have that. I have worked for as little as 0.9/line out of necessity. The absolute best you can hope for in this business is between .12 and .14 or so, and if you rock the boat they can always find someone who will do it for less. We don't get raises.

Pay rate - Sher

18 years experience, first 10 of those in a hospital setting. Highest I have ever made as an IC is 8 cpl. Still making that. Have had fairly current offers with new companies who are 'happy' to pay me 6.5 or 7 cpl due to my experience. (Sense the sarcasm in there?)

9.75 cpl as an employee - nm

Very unusual. - Details?

[ In Reply To ..]
Does this include a shift differential, a seniority differential, etc? I know of no one who is paying this as a "base" rate for employees (meaning WITH PTO, benefits, etc.).

Employee pay - kiddo

[ In Reply To ..]
I am making 8 cents per line, but luckily the account is gross line - so I'm not complaining. I am an employee, but don't take advantage of the "benefits" since they are so expensive.

To Me2 Making 40K
Jun 17, 2010

Just have to ask, how much ASR do you do? Are you able to fly through at high speed without going back to proof and still getting strong audit? Do you have several dictators with several formats or a handful with all the same format? Your credentials are impressive but there are only so many things you can do to make that kind of money anymore and it is painful for me to know you are able to make that much at the same company, doing the same kind of work. Also, how much time would you say you ...

Making More Than Me
Nov 29, 2010

Just found out through the grapevine that someone was hired at my company at a higher cpl that I was offered.  I have been there since June and was offered a low rate compared to most MTSO companies.  But it did get me off the midnight shift at a different company, which I would have stayed with had I been given the opportunity to change shifts.  She was offered 2 cpl more for straight and 1.75 cpl more for ASR.   I also have more years in the profession than she does, a ...

Anybody Making Over 30K On SR?
Sep 30, 2011

How in the heck are you supposed to make any money doing SR?  Is it possible?  I make good money as a transcriptionist and have avoided SR up to now.  Now my company is transitioning over and I'm contemplating running for the door. I don't see how it's possible to make any money when you get paid half the cpl that you would make for transcribing.  I generally transcribe as fast as the dictator talks (unless they're really crappy, of course).  You stil ...

Do You Any MTs Making $50,000 Or More Per Year?
Nov 11, 2009

Does anyone know personally of any MT who makes $50,000 a year or more?  A college recruiter called me at home one night and asked what I did for a living and when I told her I did not make that kind of money she said "I was told most MTs make around $50,000 a year.  Only in my dreams.  LOL.  ...

To those making 50+ K a year: I'm glad to know that in this industry it is still possible to make a decent living! I LOVE transcription!  I've been an at-home MT for about 5 years and see the potential, but seem to get easily distracted being at home and get restless and can't sit still.  What is it that you are doing to stay focused on your work?  Is it really about working weekends and second, third shifts?  Please share! I'm stuck at around 25K, when ...

Nov 21, 2010

Honest to Pete, this woman has no clue about pronunciation.  A couple of reports ago she's reading a radiology report and says very clearly "primitive destruction" and then goes on to spell it "permeative."  Those are two very different words and to me have very different pronunciations. Now she's on a patient who has had chemoradiation therapy, "altima" and zometa.  Umm, you mean Alimta?  It's going to be a long afternoon.  ...

I Need Help With Making VR Work For Me...
Mar 17, 2011

I'm really apparently missing the magic that is needing to make VR work for me.  Please if there is someone out there that can provide me with some insight on this, I would be forever grateful.  I am struggling with getting to even 150 lph which is overwhelmingly disheartening given that prior to recently having to become a traditional employee again due to a massive life change after 20+ years as a small business owner of a small MTSO I was QAing and/or typing upwards of 250 ...

So instead of sitting here wallowing when I run out of work, I've decided to turn these lemons into lemonade. Is MM Going To Fire Me For Making Below
May 19, 2013

I was working on an account for the last 5 years and was averaging in ASR lines at 329-340 an hour with 100% audits. Then the work got slow and I was moved to another manager and another new account.  Now my average ASR lines are around 170-180 an hour with 100% audits.  At 175 ASR line rate an hour and being part-time, that is 175 x 0.4 a line which comes to 7.00 an hour.  For part-timers, I was told you have to be at 120 lines an hour and I am still a Tier 1.   My s ...

So much has been posted about this company recently. I have no idea why so much said against the company but know how it is with me.
