Has anyone ever filed for - disability

Posted: Jun 01, 2013

from doing editing work?   I have been doing this now for about 3 years, and recently after about 2 hours into my work days I have started getting shooting pains in my hands and arms.  I don't think it is CTS because the pains are only when I am actually keyboarding.   (Then again maybe it is psychosomatic because I hate this job so much! )  Thanks.

If it's psychosomatic then you might get it for work-related stress.

You would need to see a health care provider and probably have some nerve conduction tests done to find out if you actually have CTS, any number of things could be causing your symptoms. If you hate your job, maybe you should try something else before you invest any more time into it. Another suggestion would be ergonomic; a different keyboard or mouse, wrist rests, taking more stretch breaks or specific exercises to help your symptoms. Before you are awarded disability, they will want you to try everything else first or retrain you for another job, they don't just hand that out because people think they should be getting it.

They do not accept disability - for "keyboard injuries"

[ In Reply To ..]
any longer. they say keyboarding is not a "cause" of any wrist, hand, or arm related problems. too many people were claiming injury from it, so they got some "specialists" to say keyboarding does not cause these types of injuries, and they deny any claims in regards to it.

I've got a bad foot from foot pedal and bad dictators - Anon

Used to use my right foot on the foot pedal without problems. Once I had to go from my own accounts to work for a service with horrid dictators, the stomping on the pedal to have to re-listen to words over and over ruined my foot.

Disability... - anon 2

Due to all the people being out of work in all fields, a lot of them are just applying for disability, making the wait even longer.... and red tape.

I have been claimed completely disabled by the social security doctors seen and my treating physicians, yet I am still being denied benefits into a sytem I have been paying into for decades. I have major injuries from head to toe, and then some and numerous surgeries, past and still needed. I have been applying for disability for years.... my court date in 3 months. Good luck on filing. I was even denied when I had end-stage cancer with mets, which I luckily beat.

I realize that - trying to get disability

is just another silly dream of escape from this mess, but just thought I would give it a shot.

It is certainly not easy these days and is harder yet to earn a decent salary when you are injured, especially if you do not enjoy your job and are not being compensated enough. I hope things get better for you and you feel better! I have no choice but to work to pay for huge insurance premiums and medical care. My husband is very injured as well and lost his benefits. He works a very physically demanding job and is unable to receive disability as well. They just deny, deny, deny until you can apply no more.

Congrats Survivor! Wish you luck with suit. (sm) - Angie

That is tragic you were turned down! I've heard 60% of claims are initially turned down. Hope you can get it. Sounds like you have been through a lot!

Thanks Angie!! - anon 2

Thanks for the encouragement. What really gets my goat is people like my former neighbors who use the system, such as receiving welfare while they work under the table, buying a new truck, $500 blenders, and now a new home. They are both young, able-body workers, but scammers. So glad they moved... Here I work in immense pain while they sit on their behinds watching TV

You have to be out of work for 12 months - due to disability

[ In Reply To ..]
And who can afford that ?

no..... not 12 months. - mt2

[ In Reply To ..]
My husband could not work due to peripheral neuropathy (CMT disease). The last day you work, the following day you apply. You will be turned down 99% of the time on the 1st application. Then you reapply AND hire a lawyer. Once you are approved, SS throws out the first 6 months you did not work and starts your pay from there. My husband received 2 years of "back" pay and receives his monthly SS check. Don't be afraid to hire a lawyer - they are capped at $5000.00. My husband received $25,600 with $5000 going to the attorney.

P.S. - you cannot work once you apply. s/m - mt2

When you apply, try for SSI. We did not qualify for that so I worked my butt off during those years to pay our bills. If you qualify, you'll receive some benefits right away but then if you are not found elligible for disability, you have to pay that back, which rarely happens. Check out SS Disability site.

My husband was a corrections officer. He could not stand or walk and has balance issues along with fatigue. Are you one of many ignorant people who think YOU are paying his SS?
Just curious.... - Where you think the $$ comes from

It comes from what YOU pay into the system during your working years. - mt2

If you do not have enough work credits, then you go on welfare.
You are just plain wrong. There are people on disability - who havent worked a day in their life

I have a family member age 49 (that I don't associate with) who has probably worked a total of 5 years, who is receiving disability, not welfare.

... and researched and talked with folks who have experience with disability. I concluded it could be up to 2 years plus without income while waiting for approval that MIGHT happen. Being a single person, how do I live on air? I decided to take early retirement, which I might be able to squeze by on if I don't breathe too much. Until that comes in later in the summer, I am not working and am living on a credit card. And such is my grand exit from a lifetime of work. bah.

See if you qualify for SSI - mt2

Check the SS website and read about the SSI benefits. My husband did not qualify because I work full-time. Since you are single, you may.

I worked paralyzed and now I am still partially paralyzed and left with overwhelming pain from inflammed nerve endings, eligible for disability but don't want to be another person on the dole of a government not very smart fiscally. I work in a recliner, put the mouse on the right arm, the foot pedal under my arm, keyboard on a pillow.

To Those Who Have Filed For Partial Unemployment
Nov 01, 2012

I briefly looked over the website for unemployment in my state (Texas) and find it very confusing.  Did you go to an office to do this?  Also what info do I need to have available for filing?  Believe me, I've been job hunting for 2+ years.  I've had a couple of interviews but so far no hire.  I'm almost to the point I would work in housekeeping just to get a steady job!!!!!!  Thanks for any help you can give. ...

Wow, So I Filed For Unemployment......what A Surprise....
Aug 23, 2013

Turns out my weekly benefit is MORE than I was making at MM before I got laid off, at least recently. I'm guessing it's because I made more before and slowly but surely my pay kept going down down down. Apparently the UI benefit is based on an average of what you made all year or something. All I know is that by getting laid off, I am actually going to make much more than I did as of late. Isn't that a hoot. Good riddance M-Modal! ...

Has Anyone Filed Bankruptcy And Foreclosure During These Hard Times
Mar 10, 2011

I got caught up in the ARM back in 2004 and 2005 and when it was time for my mortgage to adjust, the rates were higher, and my payment jumped to almost 900.00 dollars a month, and while that may sound low to some, how about at the same time, regular transcription went to VR, and companies started outsourcing, and my transcription pay went from about 45,000 a year to 29,000 to 30,000.  I finally found a stable MT position at a local hospital, at almost 17.00 an hour, and while it is a good s ...
