How long should a thorough, good coding program - take to complete. I know there are

variables involved, i.e. FT/PT, working, not working, etc. I'm just looking for a ballpark figure from those who have already completed a program. Thanks for any info!

Why do you ask? Not a good way to - select a school, IMO.

How long a program takes is not a good indicator of quality or content. Coding courses do not all teach the same thing. The way they are taught affects how long they take, too. A really poor college course could take 2 or 3 years due to the need to wait for classes and sit in them for a semester, while a comprehensive program from a highly reputable distance school that taught twice as much could take a disciplined, motivated student only 9 months because it is self-paced. Another self-paced online program that purports to cover as much might give you 6 months of access, but if all the material is in one online screen after another students don't grasp it and few finish and fewer still get jobs.

Hence, wondering what your question is aiming at. Not sure if there is an answer the way it stands.

Asked because Career Step claims 3-4 months - and I just find that very hard to

believe. They do say FT, but I just can't imagine it going that quickly and being adequately prepared. Am I wrong in thinking this ?

If you have a chance of going to a local school to do so I would - heres why

[ In Reply To ..]
I am assuming you want to work local. The people who are hiring you would much rather have someone who was trained at a familiar institution rather than some pie in the sky online school. Just make sure whatever course you pick allows you to sit for exams or you will have wasted your time and money because nobody will hire you if you aren't certified.
Are you a certified, employed coder? - ??
[ In Reply To ..]
I disagree about local colleges, because we do not hire from the local college. We know better. Their grads are pathetic.

We look for credentials and don't much care how the applicant got them. If you have a CCS, then your school must have been a good one.

No, you are not wrong in thinking that. - Coder

If all you want to learn is outpatient coding, you can do so in 4 months, but go with an AAPC course. Either their online course or one taught locally in affiliation with the local AAPC chapter.

If you want to learn both inpatient and outpatient, AND be qualified to sit for the AHIMA CCS exam, it will take about 12 months at Andrews. They have good results.

A community college *may* teach both, but is more likely to teach only to the CPC or the CCA, which is not well accepted by employers. That route will also take longer, because you cannot start until the next round of classes after acceptance, might have to complete prerequisites that can take up to a year, and courses might be full when you want to take the. A year long program could take 2 or more years and cost far morexthan even Andrews.
Thank you. This is what I was telling myself - but wanted to see if I was
[ In Reply To ..]
looking at it correctly. I appreciate the info!

It took me just over a year - please sm

I'm not sure how long other programs take, but I went to Andrews and it took me just over a year. I was also working as an MT. I will tell you that I didn't have much of a life outside of working and studying, but it really was so worth it!

Thank you. Can you tell me approximaly how - many hours weekly you spent

[ In Reply To ..]
on school and studying with Andrews?

They recommend 15-30 hours - A different Andrews student

[ In Reply To ..]
per week. I have found that to be fairly accurate for me.

Hours - please sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I spent at least 30 hours a week studying. When there were no jobs available at the MTSO I worked for, instead of getting frustrated about it and wasting time trying to get a job here and there, I used that time to study. Towards the end of school, I was probably closer to 40 hours a week.

If you have any more questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them.
Thank you both so much. This is closer to what - I was imaging in terms of
[ In Reply To ..]
studying time. I just couldn't imagine doing all of this in 3 months as the career step program advertises. My initial plan was that I'd need a good solid 11-12 months to dedictate to this and your replies have helped me I wasn't far off in my thinking.

Learn From My Mistake About Picking A Good Coding Program
Jan 20, 2012

I am in my last semester of an HIT program at my local community college.  This program is accredited through CAHIIM.  I actually found this program on the AHIMA website as an approved AHIMA coding program and was so excited that it was in my hometown.  Well, almost two years later and $4000 in student debt, I still have no idea how to code.  Sure, I'm great at Math 101 and English 101 and my anatomy is amazing, but I have no idea how to code.  One class that I have ...

How Long Does It Take A VR Program To Learn?
Dec 08, 2009

It's almost 2 months now on Escript and I'm still straight transcribing more than VR. I can see a lot of ready for editing reports but I hardly get any, and not getting my lines either. Some days, I only get 2 short VR reports. I'm in a really foul mood lately because of it. I'm still averaging a combination of 800 lines a day, rarely more, usually less, and I refuse to work over my shift until I get the necessary daily lines. It's bad enough I wind up working ...

Career Step - How Long It Took Some Of You To Complete The Program
Oct 21, 2009

I am currently enrolled in the Career Step program and I am wondering how long it took some of you to complete the program. I am a mother to 3 kiddos and I don't have time to work on it every single day. It seems a bit overwhelming if you look at all of the reports there are to transcribe. So, how long did it take for you to complete the program? Thanks, MT Mommy 2B ...

I Am Almost Done With My Coding Program But
Sep 22, 2011

now I don't know if I want to be a coder :(.  I planned on taking the CPC and then after a few years taking the CCS.  Before I started my program, I was naive and didn't realize how difficult and complex coding is.  I don't know that I can sit in front of a computer for 8 hours and code all day long.  It's almost too much like MTing (desk work, I mean).  Plus, I am not confident in my ability to even pass the CPC.  I am not very satisfied with th ...

Which Online Coding Program
Aug 17, 2010

How does one know which online coding program to take when they all seem pretty good, besides the price difference? I specifically want to know about AHIMA or Career Step from someone who has graduated and found a job. I know they have testimonials on their website, but how does one really know?  I was thinking about either their program or the one from AHIMA, which seems a lot longer, but apparently with either you will be able to sit for the credentialing exam, and they seem to be close in ...

Question About A Particular Coding Program
Sep 07, 2012

I am looking for a medical coding program and have been checking into various ones. I came across this one and it seems too good to be true. All others have been at least $1000 but usually more than that. This programs states it is only $349 for a 6 month indepth course. You can find it at www.medicalcodingpro.com or just google Medical Coding Pro. My concern is, does this program really train you from scratch or is it meant as a refresher course for people who have worked in this field pr ...

Is It Important To Take A Coding Program That Is
Jul 29, 2013

or does it mostly boil down to going to a school with a good curriculum and then getting a certification? I'm trying to decide between a community college program and Career Step.  The community college program, I won't be able to graduate from until 2015, which seems like forever, but with Career Step, I could be done in a year from now.  Career Step is AHIMA approved, and MModal (my current employer) told me that the AHIMA approval is important. ...

CPC/CCS Coding Program Other Than Andrews
Sep 03, 2013

Does anyone know of a (non-degree) program other than Andrews that upon completion will allow you to be eligible to sit for the CCS and CPC exam. Not necessarily needing a degree, already have Masters in Health Administration. Thanks so much. ...

Coding Program Stopped
May 14, 2014

Just got an email from our manager saying they are stopping the program for the next week or so until they get the bugs worked out.   We are supposed to type until they figure out their next step.  Some of the students still don't have the encoder program.  I think a big part of it is because of the ruling to delay ICD9.  Who knows if it will start back up again.     Will keep you guys posted.  ...

One Thing I Wish For Online Coding Program

I am currently attending Andrews School's coding program and I truly do love it.  There are still some things that confuse me a bit and sometimes I have wished there were "training" or lecture videos.  By taking this course, I have realized that I am a visual learner and have found that just by having to read everything, sometimes I have to go over it and over it to make sense of it, which then sets me back as far as time and then I have to rush to get all of my assignments comple ...
