Sandia Medical Transcription, Albuquerque, NM; Any info appreciated - Michelle

Posted: Dec 04, 2010

Does anyone work for or has anyone heard of Sandia Medical Transcription out of Albuquerque, NM?  They call themselves the “Internet Dictation Service for Traditional Catholic Doctors” and their website states they “serve doctors, regardless of religion, who only perform moral medical procedures.”

It sounds like they only do straight transcription (no SR) and only hire Independent Contractors.

Anyone have any insight into this company?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hope you have a great Holiday Season.

Never heard of them, but have a real problem with - that "moral medical procedures" restriction!

Keep religion OUT of medicine.

Keep Religion out of medicine? I think that is why we are having these problems. - AT

God and caring were the first foundations of hospitals, that is when I started. I seen God's hands at work in nurses and doctors who were truly chosen and I admired them, and had the privledge of working along side of them, even if I was only a transcriber. Over these years, we have lost the ability to care and exchanged nuns and brothers for CEOs. Maybe that is the whole healthcare problem. Patch Adams had the right philosophy. Maybe I should see if his facility needs a transcriptionist!

i'd have NO problem w/ this at ALL - sm

good for them. i left nursing when an old lady was admitted with pneumonia (everyone wants grandma to die at home until she starts dying at home).

while doing my charting, i glanced at over to see what the doc was ordering so i could plan accordingly. he had written for 1 mg of morphine/hr. i asked him, "what's the morphine for? she's not in any pain, and she's getting breathing treatments...." he shrugged and said, "it's not for her; it's for the family."

soon as my charting was done, i swapped patients w/ another nurse (two of hers, and the soon-to-be murdered old lady for her). part of my job was to take care of dying people; not to kill them.

i gave notice at the end of my shift.

i'd be proud to work for a company like that.

I do strictly hospice transcription and morphine is often given for 'dignity' at end-of-life phase, and often given in conjunction with breathing treatments.

We escort our sick and dying animals to the other side, why not our sick and dying grandmas?

MT is a job. You listen. You type. (I realize the above poster was a nurse so it's an entirely different issue as she was directly involved in patient care.)

I don't get to judge if the doctor is doing the "right" thing, the "humane" thing, an immoral thing. My job is to create a record. Period.

You surely are a machine! Not a healthCARE worker at all. You don't learn anything from your transcription and feel you are just creating a report. And period? I hope you even learn from you period and pay attention to what they use for menses. What a cold heartless orb. Young and clueless? That is why helathcare has taken a turn for the worst kind. Wait, wait till YOU get old and you need a healathcare worker who CARES.

I am making a guess that you have not yet lost your parents.

We all want grandma to die at home, yes. But has this ever happened to you?

It's heartbreaking when your loved one starts to die. You want them to be safe and not in pain. Do we keep mom at home and risk complication? Do we bring her to the hospital, where they may or may not be able to help her?

Save your judgmentalism until which time you have taken this walk.

Finally, I am surprised you have never heard of morphine being administered to the elderly with pneumonia.

Glad you got out of nursing.
Absolutely right! When it's MY turn to go, I want - all the morphine theyve got!!! nm

I'm all for easing pain in someone's passing, but deliberately slowing down someone's breathing with a painkiller is another thing altogether, especially if it's the family's choice and NOT the patient's. IMO
How do you know the patient didn't discuss it with - family or durable POA beforehand?
[ In Reply To ..]
There are VERY FEW people who want to suffer needlessly at the end of life, or who want to prolong the process of dying. If easing my way into the next world meant I would end up dying a little bit sooner than I might if taking the more painful, barbaric "natural" route, then so be it. At that point I wouldn't be afraid of death, I would welcome it.
sm YOU missed the point. Don't be so snotty. - AT

Many nurses exit because of the practices. For you to post this and think becuase you know morphine is used for pneumonia...keep walking that walk of life and not judging other's expereiences. Hospice just comforts dying, but we have sugar-coated it, and every case is different. We put Dr.Kavorkian in jail for his practices yet how do they differ from in-house Hospice and out-house Hospice? Don't say snotty remarks until you have walked their walk. I have. I have seen uncaring people in healthcare and who cares?
you missed the point - and the message - I have indeed walked the walk

judge not, my friend.
Kavorkian was a man ahead of his time. Most "human" - end-of-life treatment is barbaric.

SM does not matter if in-house now or not. That is exactly now what Hospice is ALL about---Morphine. Kendred Hospitals are the same experience. Let's look up their supply of Morphine!

I don't want my doc checking his bible every time he - begins a treatment or procedure.

[ In Reply To ..]
I ALSO don't want my doc DENYING me any treatment or procedure, simply because the local religious fanatics disapprove.
I have worked around many doctors and have - found none yet that are not
[ In Reply To ..]
religious. You would probably be surprised if you asked your doctor what they believe in. It doesn't mean that they check their bibles they do a procedure, but it also doesn't mean that they don't. I just read a study where that 90% of doctors attend relgious service at least occasionally.

Just a question, why would you care if a doctor did read his bible before he did a procedure?

You have to remember that just because you may not believe, others do, and certain things to them may be heaven or hell issues. There are many, many OB/GYNs who refuse to do abortions. Do you refuse to go to one of those for your annuals because you know that is a service they won't provide?
Their religion doesn't matter to me. I just don't want - THEIR beliefs affecting MY medical care.

Nobody is talking Jehovah's witness here! Big difference. - AT
[ In Reply To ..]
You missed the point too! Check a Bible is not anything a doctor EVER has to do, not even in the Catholic Hospitals. So, let's not go Republican here!!! It is CARING and HealthCARE. The doctors take an OATH. They used to. Now it is ALL about money and if you can't afford it, you are left to die. I have no use for uncaring people in the hospitals and doing the work. I said we should put the hospital back in the nun's hands instead of CEOs. Why is it a business? Never was meant to be.
you are casting stones at Jehovah's witnesses? - unbelievable

You are the referee of which faith is legitimate and which is not?

That is precisely the problem.

They are catholic. I worked for a catholic doctor - for years/ sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It looks like they are pro-life and basically won't be typing for any clinics that do abortions and accepting money that came from a procedure they believe is morally wrong. Most religious people will tell you, God comes first. The doctor I worked for had one of the most touching stories about how came to the decision to go to med school in his 30's. It is definitely a beautiful religious story. I think there been studies done showing where people of faith were generally healthier and/or lived longer.

while their docotrs were not allowed to perform abortions or sterilizations at the facility, there were an awful lot of hysterectomies for problems resulting because of "multiparity." They couldn't do tubals--so they were doing hysterectomies instead--granted this was years ago--long before all the hoops one has to now jump through with insurance companies before a hysterectomy was performed.
It's totally ridiculous. If the zealots had their way, we'd - be back in the Dark Ages. s/m

"Its what we call "ethical economics."

With one simple decision, you can change the world for the better. Plus, because of our stand on this important issue, we attract many of the most talented ethical transcriptionists out there. "

None of us should hope, in our lives, that a business or corporation be the arbiter of what is moral.

Newflash: medicine is science.

Pastoral care, kindness, love - are important in ALL areas of our society.

and application instructions, etc. there is a part that kind of insinuates you start out training and can move up to a transcriptionist. Having to print out and mail an application in this day and age of electronics is kind of odd also, don't you think? Usually any transcription service that totes religion is hiding something else.

If you think about it, what difference does it make if the transcription service is "religiously moral?" There are many hospitals that don't perform specific procedures (for example sterilization in a Catholic hospital). A "non religious" service will still type the report.

They are probably trying to promote their little "ethical - agenda" by refusing to transcribe - sm

any dictation on procedures they "don't approve of", thus forcing the hospital to use a 2nd outside service or keep on-site MTs around for their so-called "amoral" procedures.

I guess those narrow-minded, misguided souls actually believe that what they do (or don't do, in this case) somehow makes them better than everyone else.

They don't perform any procedure which is viewed as wrong by the RCC. Abortion tops the list.

I mean, if you think about, there's really nothing wrong in what they're saying. If somebody is vehemently opposed to abortion, it would probably kill them to have to transcribe a TOP procedure.

Agree with Snow Bunny - MXMT29

[ In Reply To ..]
Totally agree with Snow Bunny. When I used to work inhouse in various medical practices the first thing I would ask the doctor, depending on the specialty, was if they performed abortions. There was no way I was going to be associated with a group that participated in something that is reprehensible to me.

We say we're pro-choice, then people who don't believe in abortions should have the choice to live by their beliefs too.

Forcing women (especially poor, or drug-addicted ones) - to have unwanted kids is "reprehensible."
