Not happy! Nothing new with low to no work this week for my acct, I get that and accept it (sm) - shortcake

Posted: Dec 29, 2010

and I know it's temporary.  My problem is that the company I work for requires a daily line count and expects us to work around our schedules and do anything we can to get those lines in.  Usually not a problem.  But this week is a holiday week and my husband and kids are home, and we scheduled things to do alone as well as with other family members and friends, so when my shift is over it has to be over.  Christmas Eve/Christmas morning, yesterday, and it looks like today will be the same, check for work throughout my shift, which means that I am available for work and average about $2.00 an hour!!  I am not complaining about not making my usual daily pay, I'm upset that I am expected to keep checking for work for hours on end without any compensation.  It makes no sense and I feel like a fool.  I am a very conscientious and dependable employee, always work my shift, chip in when help is needed, and now when I cannot get my lines (not my fault), I get a pit in my stomach that I'm going to get a termination letter!!!!  I'm sorry, I just needed to vent.  I got up to work this morning and no work again and would just love to go back to bed but for pennies (if I'm lucky) I have to keep checking for work.......sorry for being a cry baby, but I'm also battling a very, very cold.

Depending on what company you work for - you may lose benefits first and be considered PT instead of FT. My experience was if you did not get your lnies in you were bumped to PT status and lost benefits and then I got the termination letter due to no fault of my own for not getting my line count. It is mental torment when you are expected to work around the clock and keep checking for work when you are hired for a particular shift. I know the feeling - been down that road before. You have my sympathy especially at this time of year when people want to spend time with their loved ones and the word "shift" has no bearing. Hope you have a Happy New Year. :)

Thanks for you reply. I'm wondering if you were with the (sm) - shortcake

same company....Anyhow, what really gets my goat is that I am PT with no benefits, so where is the logic here. You would think not making any money during your shift would be punishment enough. Mental torment really is what is going on here. Anyhow, I am now 2.5 hours into my shift with not 1 report, zero dollars, and I think I'm going to call it a day. You have a Happy New Year!!

No logic - RLee

I was with the big "T". What the problem is it should not matter if you are PT or FT - you were hired for a specific shift and expected to be available for that shift and YOU expect there to be work available during the hours you committed to upon hire and not have to FLEX 24 hours a day to meet your requirements be it PT or FT. Even though my work was not there during my committed shift - I always made myself available during the committed time slot so the company could not use that against me. With that said I did more times than not make myself available beyond my shift, but it still made no difference as far as my line count because if the jobs are not there how can you type them. Once I lost my health insurance - I lost my incentive to flex 12-16 hours a day. I guess it is a no win situation. God bless us all.

Don't forget - if you need to go outside to make up lines, you would be stepping on another MT's work. Then it got to where the manager would let you know when there was work during high volumes of jobs which was unpredictable. Then everyone would try to make up their lines during that time so you still had NJA.
Exactly. Flexing is a crock. May as well be on-call with a beeper! nm - anon

Don't know what company you work for RLee, but the one I worked for, we reported NJA (no jobs available), so I believe they relaxed on the line counts. Didn't your company have a "3 strikes your out? rule. I don't think anyone gets terminated for 1 occurrence in not making their lines. Shifts? Define please. We're supposed to stick with our shifts, but they don't mind it when there are NJA during those shifts. Don't forget - take a 5 minute break every 2 hours. 5 minutes? It takes me 5 minutes to get up from the computer, walk to the bathroom, lift the lid, drop the drawers - whoops, 5 minutes are up! Court reporters get a 10 minute break per 1 hour by law. What's the dif between the court reporters and MTs/MEs in the rapidity of producing sitting in a fixed position for hours causing a chronic back pain syndrome, neck spasms, even sciatica. Please no comments on ergo setups. These conditions are WITH ergo work stations.

I feel for you. sm - anon

I am at Amphion. I like the company and team and benefits package. But I have yet to make line count since I started there earlier this year. They take my insurance premiums out of my check and IRA now, but I have never heard a peep about line counts not being met. Yet, we all got an email last week about line counts not being met and no one is working their shifts and there is work out there. Well, my one and only account is NJA every other day. I work almost 40 hours a week (actually logged in time) and have not made line count at all. Not once. Even with 40 hrs/week exactly w/o OT (never get to) I'm still 2000 lines under count. If I would make line count consistently every pay period, it would be worth it to stay for the benefits, but having one big check and then one small check is not worth it anymore. I tried asking for more work, another account, changed shift, everything. I'm employee status, not IC, so I will not flex and check back all the !@#$% time for work. I work my shift and am busy or not. I just don't plain care anymore. I figure until I hear otherwise, I'm not in trouble for my line counts not being met. BTW, they are hiring also. Just saw the post today. GRRR

You made $2.00/hr? Doing better than me! Don't worry, you won't be terminated. MT companies don't want to pay unemployment. I literally begged MQ to fire me so I could do just that, unemployment, and they just would not do it.

It sucks...but the bright side is, I am working from home.... I have a job and it is a job that I do love...just gotta get over this hump!! :D

VR Do Not Accept 3 Cents!!! People
Dec 03, 2009

MTs out there..do not accept a job for VR on 3 cents a line. These companies are trying to rake you over the coals!   The benchmark was set by Escription at 4 cents a line when they came out with the software and now these companies are trying to lower the bar!!  Do not accept this!  These are the companies that offered 7 cents a line for straight typing instead of 9 or 10.  ...

Any Companies Out There That Accept Satellite 'net?
Mar 23, 2010

I'm in a rural area in the Midwest and currently have satellite Internet.  Seems like all the services are requiring DSL, which isn't available here.  I don't even know if wireless is an option.  Anyone know of service(s) needing experienced (20+ years) MTs?  Keep in mind, though, that I do want to be paid for the work.  :o)  I currently work as an IC and prefer no specified schedule so that I am able to work around my family members' m ...

I May Accept A Position With TransTech.
Jun 23, 2012

I've been offered a position with TransTech.  Would anyone please give me their opinions of the company.  I was told they charge $9 to use their equipment, but I will use my own computer but will have to use their foot pedal.  Wouldn't it better to just buy my own foot pedal then I'd always have it instead of them charging every payday.  I don't even know what they cost but will look into that.  Also I'm concerned about the required line count.&n ...

Do Most Big Companies Accept Windows 7 Now, And
Jul 06, 2013

I'm job hunting after a couple of years off. When I left, many companies (including, I believe, Nuance and M-Modal) would not accept Windows 7, which is what I have.  I hope that has changed.  I don't want to downgrade to XP and I sure as h*ll don't want Windows 8. ...

Dec 01, 2014

I suppose I could any day now if they decide to acquisition my company, but I would refuse this kind of pay formula and would look for another job ASAP.  If the en masse won't work for this minimum wage (sounds like), they will have to change it, but I suppose they could send it all to India.  Wonder what the clients would say about that?  They can only do what the industry will allow them to do in my opinion. For all naysayers, I have worked for a service that was bought ou ...

What Is The Lowest Line Rate You Are Willing To Accept As An IC? Sm
Dec 15, 2009

I just applied for a job, aced the test, and have 18+ years experience.  I was offered .06 cpl to start, but will be "generously" bumped up to a whopping .07 cpl once I've proved myself.  I have never, ever been offered anything lower than .08 cpl in my entire career.  I did make 7.75 cpl one, but that was 15 years ago, working for the Q on a simple ER account with templates out the ying yang. I really feel insulted here.  Good grief... I would really appreciate some in ...

7 cpl job has BCBS about 53.00 per pp, dental 4.00 per pp. Employer pays for short term and long term disability, and they pay your life insurance at 2 times your pay. They offer about 28 paid PTO days per year, 8 holidays a year of which you have to work at least 2, profit sharing if company has increased profits for the year, plus 401K where they will deposit 3%, plus match 50 cents on the dollar up to 8%. I REFUSE TO ACCEPT 7 TO 8 CPL WITH 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE-IT IS AN INSULT TO ME
Aug 11, 2010

I have been testing all week. Some companies will not even discuss pay until you take their tests. Then, I waste my time taking these tests only to be offered 7 and 8 cpl. It is absolutely offensive to me to offer me that low pay. You want all of my years of experience, but only want to pay "newbie" rates. I am completely and wholeheartedly giving up on this profession. ...

Okay, I am a lonnnnggg time MT/ME with Q for almost 18 years.  Historically I have ALWAYS taken New Year's holiday and worked Tgiving and Christmas every year.  (most of the time NJA anyway).   What gets me is that I asked 3 months ago for the dates Dec 30, 31 and Jan 1.  Now Fri and Sat are my days off anyway (work 2 hours Fri), so I said I would work Mon and Wed before these days to make up.   Now we get the message no more PTO, even New Year.   ...

I am starting a new acct tomorrow.  I sure hope I dont have to go through training.  We never have been trained on the cesspool that we get, we just get new accts when our regular work is caught up, so why do we need training on a new account?  That is ridiculous.  MQ, please just let me work and make a living.  Stop with all this changing CCMs and assigning new accts.  This coming pay check I probably will have 2 days on it if that much.  Geez.. ...
