I work part-time, trouble meeting line count, do I need a different job? - sm

Posted: Apr 05, 2013

I work for a national service who has a line count quota of about 185. I've only worked there about 4 months and cannot make that quota. Told several times I need to increase my line count, learn the shortcuts, etc. I still cannot increase my line count. Lately they haven't said anything. Maybe it's because I'm just parttime and I always work my shift. I worry each day that I'll get a phone call or email that I'm terminated because I can't get that dang line count. Does anyone know of another company hiring parttime? I'd even like to find parttime work at home but not MT, but what could that be?

It isn't just you. We ALL need a different job! - sm- Meerkat

I've been at my national for quite a few years, and am full-time. I still am rarely able to meet their "quota". Every time I start inching closer to being able to do so, suddenly the quota gets raised. They claim that their software "improvements" [snort!] have made us more productive. Uh-huh. Right.

The other thing companies will do if you're making your lines, is simply give you the worst dictators or the scratchiest-sounding dictations to type. Or the doctors who send a copy to everyone and his brother, none of whom are in the contact files, and which you then have to Google and look up, one by one.

I get the emails warning me my line count isn't satisfactory. If I up my speed, then QA starts going through that batch of reports with a fine-toothed comb, digging up anything that even remotely resembles an error that they can ding me for.

The deal is this: These companies don't want American workers. They want offshore workers. They don't want to just lay us all off, en masse (though M*Modal seems to be rapidly heading in that direction), because then they'd have a lot of UE to pay out. So they're trying to weed us out by inventing "inadequacies" in our work, so that hopefully we'll lose a UE appeal. And if you live in a state where it's easier to get UE, then they try even harder to get you to quit.

So don't feel bad - it's not you. Also, considering the complexity of most companies' job descriptions for each client (reams upon reams - right?), then the few months you've been there isn't long enough to be expected to be fully up to speed. Especially since they keep dangling that "acceptable line count" carrot ever further away.

185/hour? - confused

is that 185/hour? Have they been telling you to get your counts up? I would talk with your leader and ask her if there are any tricks or tips she might have to increase your speed. If you are doing the same dictator over and over, can you short cut any of their stuff, the physical exams, maybe?

What Happens At Nuance If You Are Part-time And Cannot Always Make Line Count?
Apr 26, 2013

I can do it most of the time, but every now and then I miss it, sometimes by as much as 20 lines per hour. I have had 1 email asking that I use my time more productively and make the line count. I actually do use my time as productively as I can. I admit, although I have done this for years, I am not great with VR editing. Also, with the high standards and deductions in FIESA, I really listen and listen again to much of my transcription so I don't fall below wanted numbers there. I am doing ...

How Many Pay Periods Not Meeting Line Count Before Action Is Taken? Sm
Dec 13, 2013

I just don't know what else I can do without really doing any proofreading.  I never ever had this problem before.  I am lucky enough to still do straight typing but the program is slow and I do have several accts in my pool which we all know is not the best way to work when you work on production.  I am looking for another job and actually had 2 interviews outside of MT and I am just hoping and praying, but in the meantime I have never been so frustrated and downright angry ...

Anyone Else Having Problems Meeting Daily Line Count?
May 06, 2015

My main account just switched to full-time EPIC, and I can't achieve the minimum 150 LPH no matter how hard I try.  The text is usually 1 to 10 lines, but the ADT still has to be filled in and checked and a QA marker left for the information not given.  I figure I am typing 5 lines free and 10 lines paid each dictation.  Add to the mix an ESL dictator, and I fall behind even further.  Anyone else?  ...

Line Count/time
Jul 06, 2011

Hi, just wanted to ask if anyone knows of a program that helps to keeps up with your line count, such as automatically computing it for you? My boss tells me that I don't need to keep up with it, since he/she does. I asked for the program he/she uses, but was told "no" due to not having a second liscence and that it costs money. I am attempting to make improvments on my time. Work is picking up for me which is great, but I have not been doing this long and really need to improve o ...

VR Line Count - What Kind Of Line Production Should I Shoot For
Mar 24, 2011

I was just hired on with a company to do strictly VR. I am only going to be working part time so about 4 hours a day. I am wondering from those who do VR what kind of line production should I shoot for in 4 hours of work? What is the normal VR line count for part time? I have read that most who are working full time or 8 hours a day are doing more than 1,000, even 2,000 a day. The company I will be working for wants a minimum of 10,000 lines in a payperiod which the lady said even with part time ...
