Amphion benefits - Anon

Posted: Apr 12, 2012

Can anyone that currently works at Amphion tell me how they like it and what the benefits are like and if they have plenty of work? I am thinking of jumping ship, but would like to know if the grass is any greenier first. Thanks!

Unfortunately I thought the grass would be greener but it's the same old same old...overstaffing big time and denying they do it. I am sitting here now waiting for work. If you say you have no work, they just give you yet another account, so you have to beebop around like a scavenger looking for work. I get 100 percent audits, I am very reliable, work weekends, holidays, and I deserve more than this! Plus the way they count lines is messed up. You have to get 20,000 lines to equal 10,000. They are very friendly and communicative, but that doesn't pay the bills. I have a job interview next week at a hospital, not transcription, and hopefully I will get it and be done with the MT world for good. 13 years is long enough. I wish you the best in your decision.

so just out of curiosity - oldddddMT

what do you mean when you say you have to get 20,000 lines to equal 10,000? how can they DO THAT? I am so sick of all these companies. I can't change careers right now for a plethora of reasons but I know the day is coming when I'll be able to, and I will have no regrets. The only regret I have is doing this to begin with. It was such a great career with such a bright future, and now 20+ years later, I am a rat on a treadmill and my paycheck proves it.

Hopefully to clear this up (sm) - Anon

It's not that 20,000 = 10,000. It's that the payroll system is set up to pay per typed line. Since most of our work is editing, edited lines are converted to typed lines, then we are paid at whatever that platform's typed line rate is. I don't think there's any chicanery involved. To answer the original question, I like it at Amphion a lot. Great folks to work with. But they have the same set of problems as everyone else as far as not being able to make editing what you'd make typing, running out of work because of overhiring to meet difficult TAT, etc. If I leave Amphion it will be to leave the MT field altogether, not because of any particular problem with the company.
Anon, with all due respect that 20,000 = 10,000 - does not make a bit of sense to me

I have heard Amphion is a nice place to work and personally know someone who worked there, but she was out of work quit a bit. I never questioned her about the line counts or anything so didn't get her feedback on that.

But if the screen shows that you have 20,000 lines then you should be compensated for 20,000 lines, not half of it.

Doing editing does not necessarly mean you ONLY edited half the lines in many cases you are editing pratically every line.

Maybe I am just not understanding the concept, but it does not sound right to me.
I'll try to explain it better... - Anon

...and yes, it's confusing. The payroll system was in place before a lot of the accounts moved to VR. It can't accommodate two different rates of pay.

Different accounts might be on different platforms, and different platforms pay at different line rates, but all of them pay a certain amount per edited line and a different amount per typed line, usually about twice the edited rate. For this example, let's say you work on the Hamster Wheel platform and that in the Hamster Wheel platform a line is 65 characters, and if you edit it, you get 4 cents and if you type it you get 8 cents. At the end of the hour you've typed 100 lines and edited 200 lines, so you've earned 8.00 typing and 8.00 editing for a total of $16.00. The payroll system can't show what you earned typing and what you earned editing--it can only show one line rate. So your edited lines will be converted to typed lines. In this case, you will be paid for half as many typed lines (because your editing rate is half of what your typed rate is). Your time card will show that you have been paid for 200 typed lines at 8 cpl, which is the same dollar amount as what you earned typing and editing. Again, this is just an example. The ratio depends on what platform, what account, what shift, etc. But in all cases, your edited lines are converted to typed lines and then you are paid at the typed line rate.

And ultimately, the rate you are paid per typed line doesn't really matter unless you are doing some typing. Whether I'm being paid 8 cents, 10 cents, or 400 dollars per typed line, if I only edit, I'm still making 4 cents per 65 characters edited on the Hamster Wheel.
I get it now...LOVE that Hamster wheel platform - by the way, very user friendly!

I can concur, don't do it. The pay is some "messed" up equation and I agree with Anon, it will never pay the bills and is NOT what they say it is. :(
Oh yeah, no doubt! - Anon

It definitely doesn't pay the bills, and they have a lot of the same problems as other companies. BUT I will say that in my opinion they do their level best to find work for me if I run out -- I've worked for companies who will let us fight for scraps like we're playing The Hunger Games.

I really, really want to believe that there is a place where MTs have work waiting for them and are paid a far wage for doing it. I just don't think there's any hope of finding that again, especially working a remote job.
It varies with MTs, accounts, companies etc. and - Jen

same goes for wages. So far I have had a good experience and I pray that nothing changes. There is always work waiting for me when I log on and when I log off there is plenty. I have never run out not one time. I work anywhere from 42 to 45 hrs per week. I will say that I have been EXTREMELY blessed.

And here is the kicker - I work for M*Modal.

Every once in a while I read on the M*Modal board where someone is complaining about being out of work. I wonder why they dont ask for transfers or something because I know the work is out there because they are hiring.

As far as pay goes, that varies with tier levels and years experience and mine is'nt too bad.

Loss Of Benefits
Jan 13, 2010

Okay, I may be dense, the rest of you may have figured this out long ago!  Many times I see comments here about people who cannot get enough work.  Well, at my company, if there is a low volume of work and you cannot meet your line count you are placed on part-time status and cannot regain full-time status until you have met your commitment for 90 days.  Yes, you lose your benefits....your health insurance, paid holidays, dental/vision, etc.  Well, heck, look at the money the ...

Health Benefits
Mar 02, 2012

As June is approaching us, I suggest that anyone who has health benefits appeal to upper management (I emailed Vern and got a decent reply) to please consider better benefits.  They way they are now, if you are a single parent with young children, this plan could be catostrophic in a way worse than if you had no benefits or job to speak of.  I am not single nor have young children but am currently in debt of over 2,000 to a health provider.  I will probably still be paying it off when we use ...

It is nice, I suppose, for those able to participate in the 401K, and those who would gain from the benefits.
