They only need to buy the equipment once, basically, and then maintain it and upgrade it, which will often involve only software modifications. They might take a noticeable earnings hit if they purchased all the automation equipment for every location all at once, then closed them all to install it. That is extremely unlikely.

Most large, profitable American companies currently have healthy cash reserves, so purchasing equipment that eventually saves substantially on labor costs will likely be easily absorbed and quickly recouped.
