"pulsox" - is this an acceptable abbrev of pulse oximetry? - Whadya think?

Posted: Nov 30, 2011

My speech rec continually transcribes "pulse ox" as "pulsox".  I have never seen it this way before -- thoughts on whether this is an acceptable format (since abbrevs are allowed) or should be changed to "pulse ox".

Thanks!

I would change it to pulse ox, where I am at now, that is not allowed, type - the whole thing, pulse oximetry

Stedmans Abbreviations word series see below

PULSE OX, pulsox

Seems they use pulsox or put in ALL CAPS with a space.

pulse ox - kag

I would change it and write it out if this is acceptable and not a verbatim accouont. Stedmans lists pulsox as an acceptable abbreviation although I never used it in all my years of editing/transcription!!

Thanks everyone! - Whadya think?

I think I'll just stick with pulse ox unless QA tells me differently. Thanks for all the input!!

Most Productive/popular Abbrev Expander?
Oct 21, 2009

The company I work for is changing over to ChartNet, with its ExpandText expander. I don't like that it has no way of adding/creating new shortcuts without using the mouse. The expander I use now is not compatible with ChartNet, and I'm wondering which expander is used by the majority of MTs....has no limit to the number of expansions/abbrevs it can hold, etc. Would welcome any suggestions. Thinking about Shorthand, but wondering what most MTs are using. ...

Feb 18, 2013

I'm an MME and have always had it drilled into my head never to use kilos for kilograms as it can be the short form of many different types of measurements.  I see ASR constantly typing kilos now and nearly all the MEs I QA leave it as kilos.  Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but was taught (and reprimanded by QA) that it should be kg. ...
