Is it mucous secretions and mucus production or mucous production?

I think "mucous" in this case because it's an adjective - vn

Mucous secretion is correct, and mucus production is correct. We produce mucus, but mucous secretions are secretions of the mucous membranes. Tricky.

My apologies if I was wrong about mucus being a noun in this case! I know it's "mucous membranes," which is clearly an adjective; but now, I can see that I'm confused about "mucus/mucous" production. :-D

I think it should be mucous also because it's an adjective. QA person said it should be mucus so I was getting confused. Thanks.

I can see both points of view....seeing it as possibly either a noun OR an adjective in this situation!!

I hate when things like this come up with QA because a case could be made for either option. It sometimes depends on what the SPEAKER intended, but neither the QA person nor I can read minds! (And, truthfully, the it's more than likely that the dictator would never notice, not care, or not even know the correct word form themselves; and yet, the MT has to worry that they could lose pay over things like this.)

....some kind of rule that I can run through my head to determine the correct word in similar sentence construction in the future?

For instance, I think of an example like: "This area of the country is known for coal production." "Coal" is a noun, and that's how I understand a similar sentence wherein they say "mucus production." That's why I thought we would use the noun "mucus." Is there a different rule at play here? I do see that "coal" doesn't have an adjective form such as "coalic" or "coalous," so the word "coal" can be used as an adjective...is that right? Or is "coal" a noun in my example sentence above?

I think it's the word "production" that throws me off in the sentences we're talking about. If you need the adjective form (mucous), and adjectives describe a noun, then is "mucous" describing "production"? I can't see substituting it with another adjective in this case, i.e., "The patient has bloody production." That doesn't seem right to me, but I'd really like to know what I'm missing. TIA!

When you type in mucous production in Google it basically leads you back to the mucus production.

I would transcribe it as mucus production as that is how it appears in medical literature on the internet and they all can't be wrong can they?

After thinking about it some more, as I mentioned in my post above ("I'm not arguing...."), ask yourself this: If you need the adjective form (mucous), and adjectives describe a noun, then is "mucous" describing "production"? I don't think it is. The two words together--"mucus production"--form a compound noun like "post office," "real estate," "middle class," or "attorney general." In that case, "mucus/mucous" isn't acting as an adjective after all.

As I said before, this is obviously a very confusing thing, but I also think your QA was right in this instance.

Just like we talk about bile production, but biliary secretions, I think it's the same with mucus production, but mucOus secretions.

Come to think of it, if we were to use the words "snot" vs "snotty", it would be easy to see whether to use the noun or adjective. Produce snot. Snotty secretions. (That last one sounds like a punk band.)

Does the company you work for have production requirements? I've never worked with any, but we were just informed that some are coming and that the industry standard is 150+ lines/hr. Is there a date set yet for when QC will be on production? I have never been a top producer, but I have always been consistent and have excellent quality. All the MTSOs say they want quality but it seems to inevitably come down to producing that line count, no matter what variables come into play, bad dictators, just a bad day, lots of short reports, etc. All they want is that 250-260 lines edited per day. I transcribe reports, do ASR reports and I also do MME work. I find it impossible when I an constantly "switching gears" every day on 5-6 accounts to maintain a decent production. For the life of me I cannot figure out how they justify the manhours being spent to see if we are typing all 60 minutes of each hour without bathroom or snack breaks when we are not paid by the hour. Just wondering, what is the quickest movement between phrases when moving around a document to place punctuation, skip markers, etc. Since none of us are in an office together where we can share this info, wondering if I am missing something. Here's what I think is the reason for the production statistics and what I think is going to happen this summer. I believe that MM will say they are reducing ASR pay to 4 cpl across the board and that we can all increase production by following the recommendations in their emails. Very bummed out and disgusted. Started first day, software installation went perfect, but could not get trained properly on their proprietary system because of conference calls, multiple IMs, all kinds of rucus going on there. Now I am wondering, was I offered over 9cpl to start and SUPER flexible times/days to compensate for a clunky, antiquated system (have to populate the template headers, no pay for that)!!
