Is mucus acting as an adjective here or as a noun?

I talked myself down on this issue. I do believe "mucous retention cyst" is correct.

My understanding is the cyst is filled with mucus (the noun). (Mucous is the adjective.)

It would be like a water retention pond. We wouldn't call it a watery retention pond.

It's one of the biggest medical word boogers ever. Google will substantiate both terms, but a good test to use is to put the terms inside quotes.

It's interesting to compare "mucus retention cyst" and "mucous retention cyst" and read the returns carefully.

is it mucous (adjective) retention cyst. Mucus (noun) is used in a - sentence like There is mucus in the throat.

There is a huge conflict regarding this issue. I looked into it on several different sites, several different books and dictionaries, and even contact my QA department, and they all come up with different answers. From what I was told from taught, mucous is used when saying "mucous membranes" and mucus is used when saying "mucus in the nares". I would have to agree with Mary as mucous (adjective) is describing or identifying what type of cyst it is, and mucus would not do that - it would simply name it. Although, if you used a hyphen in this case, mucous-retention cyst or mucus-retention cyst, I found that both are acceptable. Go figure. I think in this case you would have to contact your QA department and ask what they would prefer to make sure you are meeting account specific criteria for your account.

Plan For Fluid Retention?
Dec 03, 2010

Hi everyone, thanks for looking at this. I have a discharge summary with a patient with volume overload, renal failure, and electrolyte imbalances, among others. This is an ARNP dictating, and in the plan, she dictates 1500 mL fluid retention. She specifically says retention, but that isn't something they try to do, right? I think it should be fluid restriction, but I don't know if I should change it or flag it. What do you think? Thanks! ...
