interesting message from M-Modal re cpl rate - ab

Posted: Dec 03, 2011

Take a minute to read this interesting article from M-Modal themselves, and what they have to say about compensation for VR.  It may surprise you!  For me personally, it validates what I have been feeling as I struggle to get back to my former paycheck with straight typing.

Especially the fact that those of us who are very fast in straight typing take the biggest pay cut. One question I have is why those of us using M-Modal have to make up our own shortcuts (I have too). I came from a much more user-friendly program (ExText) and all these shortcuts were part of the program, you didn't have to take your hands off the home keys, use arrow buttons, go through all the extra steps of drop-down menus just to put in a heading, etc. I'm trying to get my VR on M-Modal back up to the speeds I had on ExTExt but so far no luck.

I haven't finished the article but what I did find interesting was that it asked how will the profession attract quality MTs? It won't; it will attract a person interested in making a bit of extra money working from home, "the hobby MT as opposed to the career MT."

After the merger of Medquist/M-Modal, I think they should keep this point in mind.

I found this statement particularly disturbing...sm - Old Woman

"I once heard an MTSO executive say that his company would reduce costs by cutting line rates, allowing the high-producing MTs to leave, and then hiring a bunch of lesser skilled MTs at lower line rates."

While I am not among the "scary fast" MTs (I probably produce around 175 lph on a good day, average), I find this statement concerning, not only for the future of career-oriented MTs (of which I am one), but also for the future of the quality of medical records in general. To sacrifice quality for a company's bottom line is, in my not so humble opinion, irresponsible and unethical. I certainly hope that this trend turns, and turns soon, before the lack of quality causes more loss of life and irreparable damage to patient care, not to mention the loss of income for MTs who do care about quality.

Thank you for sharing this article. Perhaps MTSOs will listen to someone who has a broader view of the industry than their own bean counters.

I have heard these comments, as well. I actually had my work "rerouted" to another MT to decrease my overall quota by a company so they would not have to pay me, my benefits, etc. Very, very scary what these companies employ and they lie about. I have worked this industry for several decades as a career and it is constantly geting worse. With Obamacare on the horizon, it is going straight into the toilet. You need only read the part of this bill that has to do with us and our industry to see how severely we will all be affected come next year and more so in 2013. Although not widely discussed, there are cuts looming for us down the road. Very sad for all of us that have dedicated our lives to patient care and promotion of health accuracy. I personally was horribly affected by someone's error in the EMR that cost me several thousands of dollars. To date, they have NEVER corrected this error. EMRs are only as good as the person entering the info.

And that's what a lot of us have been saying on this subject - VR equals less pay for top producers, nm

May 01, 2012

I thought they were 2 different services.  Everyone is buying out everyone, so who knows.  All the small companies have been merged I guess.  I thought Nuance was out of New York and were the primary with VR.  Maybe one has to keep up with the changes and be a member and pay the dues and go to the meetings with AAMT and be a CMT to keep up with the changes, even though you still get 4 cents. ...

Very Interesting.....
Apr 16, 2012

I think it is very interesting how a company will make you jump through hoops to "prove" you are an independent contractor but still want you to use an employee based punch in/out system. You don't get it both ways, if I am an independent contractor, then I don't have to use your employee based punch system, especially when you want to charge for it but to keep track of my own hours is free. ...

It Will Be Interesting To See What Happens When
Jan 28, 2014

Been reading the business perspective of what will happen when (not if - when) minimum wage is increased, and 99% of companies who employ low income workers say that will be the day they lay off most of their employees, or have to close their doors altogether.  Not that I expect MModal to ever "close their doors", but that does leave open the other alternative for a huge layoff as the need to "supplement" employees who aren't earning minimum wage, or who don't meet their ridiculou ...

Something That I Found Very Interesting
Nov 21, 2009

Just for the heck of it, I went to the resume section of this board, and noticed there were quite a few MTs with "entry-level or less than 5 year's experience" wanting to be compensated 10-15 cpl  -- I really seriously doubt that is going to happen, especially for a "newer" MT.  I would suggest that if you are really serious about finding a job in MT, then revise your expected compensation rate to something a bit more realistic. ...

Isn't It Interesting That Newbies Are Getting
Jul 01, 2010

us oldies are getting below 98%, in some cases waaayy below, after years or decades of exemplary work, with raises, etc. How much more obvious can it get that they're downsizing the highest paid (and most experienced) MT/ME, to hire the newbies and get the tax breaks. Makes me SICK, so I resigned a couple weeks ago and feel absolutely in shock that I did it, finally, and trust in God for a better job. ...

Jun 15, 2011

I work in-house at a clinic.  When I'm reading over reports from the transcription service, I noticed there are no periods after "Mr.," "Dr.," and so forth.  The transcriptionists type them as Dr, Mr, Mrs, etc.  Is this yet another way to cheat the MTs out of keystrokes?  If so, that's pretty pathetic. ...
