Why I love VR - General Decline

Hey, I don't actually type that crap, ya know! I have way too much dignity to be associated with that garbage for the pittance they are paying. However, looking at the crap that VR produces that is included in patient records, I realized, hey, why bother proofreading??? Anything I produce with my old-fashioned, stone-age, luddite TRANSCRIPTION looks a heck of a lot better than anything I've seen VR produce. No one will notice any mistakes I might make. They'll just think VR stuck it in there! And I almost never bother to do any research anymore. Why bother there, too? Hey, my line count has increased a lot since VR!

So, I'd just like to join the VR Lovefest here and say, "Thank you VR!"

I'm very, very serious. I LOVE VR!! In the bad old days, when MTs were held to a high standard, I used to worry about each and every mistake I made, like leaving out "an," "the," etc. Now, seeing the high quality produced by VR, I realize how low the bar of "quality transcription" has fallen, that these little mistakes I make will never be noticed among all the garbage reports produced by VR. Therefore, I have stopped proofreading at all and my line count has improved dramatically. Really! VR Lover, et. al, you are so right. I have finally seen the light! VR is wonderful! Thanks again, VR!!

They've already dumbed down the transcription at your company too. Maybe you just haven't noticed because maybe you just aren't that good, so VR looks ok to you too.

Really, VR has been great for me! I used to be so anal about getting every last word right in these reports. Now I don't have to worry about it. The Quality Bar seems to be at about "looks good enough" for all MTSOs, so your work probably looks good enough too.

Kind of a sad thing to find our profession suddenly held to the standard of "good enough" but, hey, like I said, VR has been great for me! Not, of course, that I would ever stoop to typing that crap for the money they are paying, but my line count with straight, old-fashioned transcription has really climbed with only having to worry that the report looks "good enough" on last glance.

But like they say with marrying, someone for everyone so if you found your place that is really all that matters in life. As far as being dumbed down at my company, cannot speak for yours just like you donâ��t speak for mine. As long as a person is satisfied that is really what counts. Congrats!

Beware VR - oldone

I have transcribed for 37 years, so yes I'm old. Straight transcription is my love. My experience with VR is this, the doctors cannot speak (never have been able to but we somehow have made it through, lol), but VR just is not developed enough to muddle through accents. I should know. I am very Southern and when I used a VR program once (just playing around) it could not recognize my accent. ie, the word therapy came out as thappy. Last I looked the south was still in the good old USA. If VR cannot recognize an American, how can it possibly recognize a foreign dictator who cannot pronounce dog?!? I am an almost exclusive ESL transcriptionist. I don't get paid much anymore but I can do those ESLs. sigh...sob...

Okay, phew, I vented and feel better. Back to the sand pits!

southern accents, have been told I do also but I do probably 90% or more VR and mine does exceptionally well in getting even the hardest of the ESLs. It has a lot to do with the system you use, not so much the dictators. I have 1 physician, ESL, that thank God I do not have to straight type, horrible and yet VR is about 100% correct with his.

I currently live in the south but Iâ��m a native New Yorker. I don't have the Rosie Oâ��Donnell pattern of speaking (undoubtedly from New York), but Iâ��m always asked where my â��accentâ�� is from, but they usually guess NY or NJ. They can do that as easily as I can recognize and the southern style of speaking.

That said, Dragonâ��s recognition capabilities are based upon the way a person ARTICULATES and not upon what part of the world they come from. Dragon has always been advanced to understand different accent styles, including Indian, but if the Indian doctor does not articulate properly, they might also get â��thappyâ�� when they dictated â��therapy.â�� But, thatâ��s not to say than another Indian wouldnâ��t understand what they said with perfect clarity.

In a nutshell, Dragon is really no different than you. With sufficient training (the program or your ear), it will understand whatâ��s being said. It just takes a lot of time and effort.

A new ESL dictating a DS. Can't speed him up because he's too "new" (to this country?). He is spelling every other word!!!!!! AND then spells it again - extubated, e-x-t-u-b-a-t-e-d, extubated e for elephant, x for crosses, t for tom, u for umbrella, b for .......... get the picture (sigh)? An email gets sent out around 4 a.m. stating there is a critical backlog and asking everyone to help out. The email shows the backlog, but it's really not that big. Says if you have hours to make up to do it today. This is at 4 a.m., when a lot of us are sleeping. Panic!! I log in for my regularly scheduled shift......and NJA! Thanks a lot MQ. I love to be able to fill in blanks that people can't get and to help them. I wish I could give them detailed explainations so that they can understand the why of the error or resources I used to find it. However, because of the ridiculous pay and having to wade though ILP garbage (sorry, I don't enjoy helping them out), I'm only able to leave brief or even no messages to try to at least make what I did when being an MT. Imagine 8 hours of looking up "J. A. Smith" in phone books to write down his/her phone number. Then searching for the modifier for his second line. More like insurance work or accounting (even without the numbers) than language based work. I love the narrative of the reports I do, not the lab data. So, I got this super long report with HORRIBLE audio. When I got finished it looked like a piece of Swiss cheese it had so many blanks. I didn't even CONSIDER sending it to QA as the audio was just terrible and there was NO way I was sending a report that long...and then get paid 3 cents a line because it might put me over 5% QA submission. Finally sucked it up and bought a Kinesis Advantage keyboard.
