Love my new keyboard! - 20 year vet

Posted: Mar 21, 2012

Finally sucked it up and bought a Kinesis Advantage keyboard. Wanted one for at least 10 years, but couldn't justify the cost, but after typing off my laptop for a few months and quickly developing tennis elbow, it was time to make the switch.  I love this thing! My arm pain is gone after just a week, and I love that I actually type faster when I maintain good posture; when I slump, my fingers are positioned correctly to go very fast. I also love that the key "connects" halfway down, so I'm learning not to bang on the keys and use a lighter touch.  I'm using a touch pad as well, set on the keyboard between my hands.  Works well.

I promise I'm not getting anything from the company or anyone else by sharing this, just wanted to share the good news! I'm planning on continuing for years yet, and I think this thing is going to do the trick.

Sorry - fingers NOT positioned correctly when slump - nm

I have been wondering about that keyboard for quite a while. I think I will be getting one too, when I can afford it. Glad you like your new keyboard :)

Bought a refurbished one through Kinesis. - cheaper

Saved about $30 by buying a refurbished one directly from Kinesis, still has the same 2-year warranty as a new one.

Good for you! I just sold a couple on ebay, but only because I am going to try their Free Style model. I have had CTR on both wrists and I have had no re-injury. I believe it's due to the Kinesis.
I have the Kinesis Freestyle, have been using it for over 6 years.... - Kiki

I love it. If you would like to ask me anything about it, just post (don't try to email - I can't access that email anymore)

When I first got on here and gushed about it, it was so funny, someone accused me of being a salesman for Kinesis! Hahaha.

I have it remapped for my personal use (to make the VR I do easier).
I didn't know the Kinesis FreeStyle had (sm) - Rose

remappable keys. Are all of them remappable? I bought/returned one about 10 years ago because I could not get used to where they had put the function keys. But I was amazed that just by pulling the 2 sections part about an inch how RELAXED my shoulders got. I just couldn't get used to where the function keys were. Maybe I didn't try it out long enough. Now, if it had remappable keys....I might try it again.
Yes, you can have any of them remapped. What - Kiki

I did was got the keyboard first (I think from an online place called Human Solutions) and figured out exactly how I wanted my keys. For example, I switched the up/down/left/right arrows to a more comfortable position for doing VR. I made a few other changes after carefully deciding. Then I sent it to, I believe, the Kinesis store to have it remapped. Costs, but well worth it in the end.
I have a Avant Keyboard that can be remapped - Rose

by me with just some simple commands on the keyboard. Though I paid a lot for the keyboard, it has not held up as it should. I was looking for another remappable keyboard. On the Avant you can remap the keys, then change them around at any time. I know if Avant could make a keyboard do this so could other manufacturors. Probably doesn't even cost very much money.

Are you able to connect the Free Style to more than one computer at the same time? Do you have the inclined version?

Thanks!

I'm not sure if you can connect the keyboard to more than one computer (at a time). I didn't think you could do that with any computer. Unless there is some kind of adapter? Maybe someone else knows about this. You could probably call the Kinesis store or email them at their website.

The keyboard I have comes in 2 halves. You can either choose to connect them together and tilt them or separate them. There is also a tilted platform you can attach it to (this is what I have). I think what I like most about it is the feel of the keys. They don't require as much pressure as most keyboards.

Hope this helps.

Awe congrats! - AnonToo

Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro...need A New Keyboard, Any Recommendations?
Apr 03, 2010

Microsoft has discontinued these great keyboards and I need a new one.  Anybody aware of a split keyboard that has a really nice touch (remember those old IBM keyboards?) for transcription work by Microsoft or another brand that you really like? I'm open for suggestions please ; 0  My only complaint with this one is the keys are a bit clunky to press down (especially the space bar).  Thanks! ...

Why I Love VR
Dec 20, 2009

Hey, I don't actually type that crap, ya know!  I have way too much dignity to be associated with that garbage for the pittance they are paying.  However, looking at the crap that VR produces that is included in patient records, I realized, hey, why bother proofreading???  Anything I produce with my old-fashioned, stone-age, luddite TRANSCRIPTION looks a heck of a lot better than anything I've seen VR produce.  No one will notice any mistakes I might make.  The ...

An email gets sent out around 4 a.m. stating there is a critical backlog and asking everyone to help out.  The email shows the backlog, but it's really not that big.  Says if you have hours to make up to do it today.  This is at 4 a.m., when a lot of us are sleeping.  Panic!! I log in for my regularly scheduled shift......and NJA! Thanks a lot MQ.  Take work away from people that are scheduled to work just because you get a little panicky at 4 in the morning. ...

Anyone Using This Keyboard?
May 31, 2010

Best Keyboard
Jun 21, 2011

I am going to be looking for a new keyboard.  I see most of you seem to like the split keyboard.  When I tried that at one time I couldn't get used to the 6 being on the wrong side of the keyboard (I use my right hand for it), for one thing.  Is this something you just get used to or do you all not have that problem to begin with?  Does anyone have an ergonomic keyboard that is not split that they like?  ...

I love to be able to fill in blanks that people can't get and to help them.  I wish I could give them detailed explainations so that they can understand the why of the error or resources I used to find it.  However, because of the ridiculous pay and having to wade though ILP garbage (sorry, I don't enjoy helping them out), I'm only able to leave brief or even no messages to try to at least make what I did when being an MT.  These messages come across as rude, nitpic ...

You Will Love It
Mar 12, 2014

Imagine 8 hours of looking up "J. A. Smith" in phone books to write down his/her phone number. Then searching for the modifier for his second line. More like insurance work or accounting (even without the numbers) than language based work.  I love the narrative of the reports I do, not the lab data. Need New Keyboard

Hello all, I am in need of a new keyboard.  I am using a Goldtouch now but the keyboard configuration does not really work for me, specifically the cntl, alt, and windows keys, as well as the home key.  I hit the wrong keys frequently, too much, and it hurts my production.  I do like the "touch" of it though.  I would like something that feels the same, a little bit spongy but not sticky.  Any suggestions.  TIA. ...

Keyboard
Jun 25, 2015

Hello, I am using a Microsoft split keyboard that is just about worn out and would like to know what most of you are using now. After using a split keyboard I do not think I could go back to a regular keyboard. Also, I keep the keyboard slanted to the left slightly which is more comfortable for me, probably because I am left-handed, but it does make to getting to some of the keys on my right hand a little difficult. Anyhow, just curious to see what most of you are using now. Thanks. ...
