When working MQ ASR, what are your tricks for - maximizing lines. Please no nay-sayers SM

Posted: Feb 20, 2011

I know many of you will only have bad things to say, have heard that all before. Now I want to hear from those who have done well on it.  Of course, those are the ones working now and might not even see this post, lol.

There is a refresher course this Wednesday, and I am - going to ask how

[ In Reply To ..]
I can make a decent line count when I am having to make 3-5 corrections every single line in the report. I figure this is a chance, though probably futile but at least will give me some tiny satisfaction, to confront someone who has anything to do with ASR. Heck, even if I didn't have to listen and punctuate and correct, the time it takes to complete the ASR screen, add all the cc's and to put the document into the format the client wishes, the amount of time it supposedly takes for one job is gone. They want the meat and potatoes (well-transcribed report)and the gravy (the ASR and client's format) but are only willing to pay for the gravy. We will see what kind of documents they use for examples, ie, does it look anything like the crapola I get. I want them to take one of my jobs and show me what I am doing "wrong" that is causing the slow down in my production. I've tried it all - cursor tracking which never ends up where I want to edit, so I expend more keyboard strokes (shortcuts) than 1 mouse click. Shortcut to each paragraph? Uh... what paragraph, I have to put everything into paragraphs.

BTW, you have to get your CCM to sign you up so you can get the conference code and site to sign in.

Thanks, but I know how they say it should work. I - want to hear from those how are SM

actually doing the work, who have figured out the little tweaks and glitches of how to make this work. We all know how it is suppose to work is completely different that how it actually works.

Improving line count with ASR - yogamom

I had a good day the other with ASR line counts. I did 297 lines in an hour. I use Speedtype instead of the expander in DQS. With the other expander programs you can program commands. One of my commands is to place and period and then double space and capitalize the next word. I am able then to perform 2 tasks with one command. I have others commands that are very helpful and do 2 or more functions with just pressing 2 keys on my keyboard. Check out the productivity talk web site and you will get a lot of very useful tips utilizing programs such as IT, Shorthand and Speedtype.

Happing typing!

Do you have any tips for getting to all the corrections? - multiple in every line. nm

.

Not MQ, but with several mistakes in a line I - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
regard it as one big correction and wipe the line clean to fix it faster by eliminating all that time-consuming repetition of keystrokes. I have shorts to clear from the cursor to the next period and to clear to the right margin (and to the left margin, for that matter). I also have many common phrases and sentences in storage (especially including those mistakes SR makes over and over) so that retyping often takes just a few keystrokes.
Where did you learn shorts? I did recently program a key - board key so can insert , with my SM
[ In Reply To ..]
right hand. I use mouse to go down a list and instert the commas with my right hand. I am just starting with VR and dont want to learn things the slow way and then have to break those habits. I want to learn quick from the get-go.
BoardKey, I made the shorts myself by recording - the necessary keystrokes on my
[ In Reply To ..]
expander, in my case Shorthand.

Your plan was mine some time ago, and I do recommend it. :) Your right-hand comma sounds good.
When you clear out a line of several words, do you have to - place any kind of marker to help SM
[ In Reply To ..]
"teach" the program? And what is the guideline used to determine whether fix a ? number of words as opposed to wiping out sentence from mistake to margin? Personally I dont think any VR can be trained by so many editor/trainers doing the work done by some many different voices.
I earnestly try to train SR in most reports, above and beyond, - I believe. However, SR is failing in
[ In Reply To ..]
these awful ones--just too many corrections. The dictators are not working with the SR engine to become better, and their reports should not be sent through SR for editing but sometimes are. So, no, I don't try to teach the program in these. It's a losing battle. In justification, on some accounts, not all, we have been given instruction/permission to do them however we can, including erasing and retyping. Nobody's ever complained about any of them, though.

By using an expander program other than the one in DQS you can set up commands such as changing "in" to "and" or "is" to "has" just to name a couple. I find most of the editing is usually small words or verb tenses. I have one that automatically changes the heading "DISCHARGE DIAGNOSIS" to "DISCHARGE DIAGNOSES" I find ASR always reads it as singular rather than plural. You can also make pick lists, I.e., your primary account doctor database can be setup as a pick list where you just add the names as you come across them and then you don't have to access the DQS database, which at times is very slow.
So do you hilite wrong word, hit hot key/s and viola, in becomes and? In/and - is a pet peeve of mine. nm
[ In Reply To ..]
x
instead of highlight, and hit hot key, - why not...
[ In Reply To ..]
why not make a shortcut for things like this by adding the letter z after word.

For example... inz would switch to and,
az would switch to an, etc...

then if you are editing along and see "This is a 84-year-old female" you could just type z after the "a" and hit space and it would switch it.

Kewl.Tthought since the A was there when doc. opened, - could be incorporated into new expansion. nm

Do you think it helpful to do quick read, put in headers - fix obvious mistakes, then do whole job? nm

Not for me at all. Work top to bottom, send. - NM

Do you listen, fix a chunk, listen, fix a chunk etc?Or - do you stop on each mistake and SM
[ In Reply To ..]
fix. When I try to do job top to bottom I find myself having to listen to the same thing multiple times, once to fix beginning of sentence, maybe add headers. Then listen to same thing when it overlaps with the next mistake, which I stop and fix and then listen to overlap, on to next mistake, etc. Or are you doing it differently somehow? Btw, thanks for taking time to answer.
I fix from the beginning to end. My ASR is so bad - I have to go word by word
[ In Reply To ..]
or miss stuff. It can't even get "and" and "the" and "or" correct. Misses chunks of words. Adds in ghost words. I just listen from the beginning to the end and fix on every line.

DoYouStop, the header comes first, so it's fixed, - SM

then moving down with dictation. Maybe you could slow down and practice fixing as you go. When a word needs replaying to understand, I do do that. If I can't get it, it does get marked and I go back for those after I finish the report otherwise. Also, when I'm just not in the groove and not trusting my work I do have to go back up and scan for mistakes.

But basically, the routine is to work carefully but fast and do it right the first time. Check demographics--once (no recheck at end), edit as I listen to the dictation to bottom, then send. Whenever I have a half second, such as when a dictator slows for a word, I'll scan the work on the screen above for mistakes. I've been doing this a long time now (am always 98+ -100% on QA), but doing it 8 hours a day every day should hopefully mean settling in fairly fast--after the initial struggle is past of course. :)

I listen and fix as I go adding headers also. I put in QA marker(s) as I go along and when I am finished I go back and re-listen to the QA marker(s). I find once I go through a whole report, I can usually understand what the QA marker is. I also find that some doctors actually dictate from a previous report on the patient and always check that out to see if I can get what I need from there.

[ In Reply To ..]
When I read your message I thought it was me who had said that. I also do what you do by proofreading whenever there is a slow down in dictation. I also go back at the end of the report and most times I can get the word(s) that I have placed a QA marker at. I always read a line above or below the one I am working on when there is a lull in the dicator. I always get the ADT right the first time at the beginning. I don't want to have to go back and fix that at the end. I also pass QA audits at 98% to 100% always! For me I always proofread before uploading any long paragraphs because that is where I can have a mistake and want to catch it before uploading. I find short paragraphs are no problem.

I agree work carefully but fast and do it the first time right!

Could you please post the link to this website. I would be very interested. There's got to be something that I am missing because I'm not making anywhere near 297 lines especially with the crappy consistency of the QA I get which 90% of the time contradicts itself and each other. Please anything you can afford in the way of genuine guidance I would be grateful for because I need to keep this job for the benefits.

Sorry I just saw your message tonight. Here is the web site. http://www.productivitytalk.com/forums/

I suggest you sign up and start reading through the forum. I use Speedtype not the expander program in DQS. Shorthand is exactly the same as Speedtype and there are other programs, i.e., Instant Text and probably some others. I can set up commands that do 2 or 3 functions that can be done by using 2 keystrokes. DQS cannot do that.

Also, the day I did 297 lines per hour was a very good day with good dictators. I would say though on average I do 200+ and if it is a bad day with lots of ESL then under 200, probably like 175.

I also read other message boards such as CareerStep and a Canadian forum.

I am a Canadian MT working for Medquist.

I hope the above helps and if you have any questions, please feel free to send me a PM.

Anyone Have Any Tricks In DocQscribe To

prevent the P in p.r.n. from being capitalized when the enter key or space bar is pushed such as in medication lists? Tricks To Faster Speech Recognition Editing?
Aug 14, 2011

I have been straight transcribing for many moons. Then got into doing QA and a lot of the reports I get are straight editing of speech recognition rather than doing QA. My production stinks when I do straight editing and have no idea how those of you that edit speech recognition all day make a living. Kudos to YOU! I am one of the probably few QA who really appreciates you MT's who make our jobs easier and do AMAZING jobs transcribing what I can't even QA. Thank you for your hard work ...

ShortHand Expander - Extra Tips Or Tricks ?
May 12, 2013

Well, after a less-than-stellar trial of IT and a bit of a disappointing trial of SmarType, I think I finally found one that works well for me in PC Shorthand.  Really easy to make additions, not too obnoxious or distracting on the screen, and, after playing with the settings, no lag in expanding.   Does anyone who uses Shorthand have any extra tips or tricks to increase its capabilities aside from what is listed in their instruction manual?  So far it's meeting my needs quite nicely ...
