New to VR - need some tricks of the trade! - busygirltoo

Posted: Apr 04, 2011

Been working with VR since last October.  After rebuilding shorthand file and adding words to autocorrect for the last 5 months, I feel those items are no longer a insignificant factor hampering my production.  Sadly, I'm finding I'm not as productive as I need to be in order to make a living.

Anyone have any VR tricks to increase production?  I'm headed to the poor house if I don't get this figured out soon!

Truly appreciate any help you can offer!!!

Try to use what's already there. For example, if VR has "neuroforaminal" and you want "neural foraminal", make your shorthand file "neuroforaminalx = neural foraminal". That way, when you come across, neuroforaminal, just stick an 'x' at the end and viola, you'll get neural foraminal.

How do you do this??? - Ang

In my word expander, if I just type an "x" at the end of a word in ASR, it only sees that I typed "x." It does not see the previous letters in front of it (hope I am explaining myself well). How do you get this to work with your expander? In otherwords, if I actually typed the word "neuroforaminalx" it would expand it to neural foraminal, but since I am actually only typing "x" it will not work.

It's just how my word expander works - peep

After typing the 'x', I do have to hit "enter".

Thanks, Peep. I think you're giving me some tips for word expander. I have a pretty good grip on that. (I just had to start over when I started this job in October as my old expander was not compatible with their platform. Been a nightmare to reenter 15 years worth of expansions!)

You got any useful tips for increasing productivity with Voice Recognition editing??? I could sure use those!

Thanks, Peep!

For the good dictators that you don't have to edit much, try speeding up the sound as much as you can. This increased my production dramatically. Good luck!

Thanks, Passin Thru. I have not tried that! Gonna give that a go and see what happens. Appreciate the tip. :0)

There are a lot of tricks that good MTs are using, like Peep's. I use that trick very often. I also spell check every report before I start it.

Since every client profile is different I also have tricks for that. For example; i have accounts that are only single space between sentences so I do a find and replace and fix all the double spaces that VR inserts at the beginning.

Mostly though, and unfortunately, much of the garbage VR types in simply has to be manually corrected. Read Manic's post above. Your dropping productivity is the norm rather than the exception.

This is what I was afraid of. I still do the same amount of lines, even more actually, but not the 2.5 times it would take to earn a similar wage. Very frustrating. Time to hunt down a straight typing job . . . or go to work at McDonald's! That would be an improvement at this point! LOL Thanks of your reply.

Anyone Have Any Tricks In DocQscribe To
Oct 01, 2011

prevent the P in p.r.n. from being capitalized when the enter key or space bar is pushed such as in medication lists? I don't get it, it does not capitalize the B in b.i.d. or the T in t.i.d., just the P in p.r.n. It used to take 2 spaces after a period before capitalizing letters, now it is only one space and very irritating. Thanx ...

Today Is The First Day ... Tips And Tricks For Quality?
Mar 30, 2014

Today begins the first pay period for the start of the 99.7% quality requirement.  That gives us today and tomorrow before it "officially" begins but just wanted to say good luck to everyone.  I'm saying a prayer for us all.  Just a tip to share ... most of you might already know this one but it's new to me and has saved my butt tons of times already.  Instead of viewing the client profile in the tiny column on the side of the document, I always expand it to full ...

Tricks To Faster Speech Recognition Editing?
Aug 14, 2011

I have been straight transcribing for many moons. Then got into doing QA and a lot of the reports I get are straight editing of speech recognition rather than doing QA. My production stinks when I do straight editing and have no idea how those of you that edit speech recognition all day make a living. Kudos to YOU! I am one of the probably few QA who really appreciates you MT's who make our jobs easier and do AMAZING jobs transcribing what I can't even QA. Thank you for your hard work ...

ShortHand Expander - Extra Tips Or Tricks ?
May 12, 2013

Well, after a less-than-stellar trial of IT and a bit of a disappointing trial of SmarType, I think I finally found one that works well for me in PC Shorthand.  Really easy to make additions, not too obnoxious or distracting on the screen, and, after playing with the settings, no lag in expanding.   Does anyone who uses Shorthand have any extra tips or tricks to increase its capabilities aside from what is listed in their instruction manual?  So far it's meeting my needs quite nicely ...

TAA (Trade Act) Information

I am looking for any Axolotl MTs who have been let go within the last year to sign a petition with me:  http://www.labor.ny.gov/workforcenypartners/taaforms/taa-petition.pdf It does nothing against the employer; in fact, they usually support the act.   There need to be at least 3 workers to sign before it can be submitted.   I hope every MT who has lost their jobs has applied for this...  MQ is on their list already, as is United HealthGroup (only not for MT).  Plea ...

Anyone Know Anything About The Trade Act Petition?

Trade Act News About Medquist
Dec 24, 2009

I spoke to a representative of the Trade Act in person today to ask some questions.  I learned this and want to share it to help empower those who feel hopeless this season: -All states are participating in the Trade Act.  -There was an old version of the Trade Act which necessitated that you be laid off by your company to benefit with the Trade Act.  The new version (ending with #7, not #6) starting in February 2009 allows those still working to enroll in the program. -Medquis ...

Is Anyone Aware Of The Trade Adjustment Assistance Act?
Jun 12, 2012

I just found out about this government program.  From what I understand, it helps those who have lost all or part of their hours/income due to outsourcing of their profession, especially us older workers who need to retrain in order to reenter the workforce in another field.   It looks to me like Medical Transcriptionists should fit their description, and we should be eligible for some funding to get some training!   The catch is, in order to file, you have to have at least 3 pe ...
