Pay by line versus hourly rate - Frustrated MT

Posted: Sep 16, 2010

Hi all. I'm a newbie to these boards.

I've been reading all the posts here about the VR programs.  More production + more hours = less pay.

Does anyone here work for a company that has gone to an hourly rate instead of pay per line?  And if so, what are your thoughts/experience on this?  I'm working for a company that has changed us all over to hourly pay and I'm still very unhappy.

Frustrated, the working equation is More Production x Same Hours - Pragmatist

[ In Reply To ..]
= Same or Greater Pay.

Cutting loose of people who have decided it's impossible to do well and joining those who have learned how to still do well is critical to making that equation work. I could repeat so much, but won't. It's dinnertime.

The best advice I can give is to accept advice from those who are doing well and ignore those who are not. They really want your company, but survival requires you do not join them. Blow them a kiss and move on.

P.S. Start by forgetting the search for hourly-rate work. There isn't much, and it cuts too many good jobs out of the field. Instead, plan to work diligently to maintain your income with production pay, and maybe increase it? If you weren't topping $50K per year before, and most MTs were paid much, much less, it's very possible. The less one was paid, the greater the income to be gained. Choose your target, depending on skill level and commitment: $30K? $40K? $50K? All very doable at an MTSO after skills are honed and accounts have become familiar; less is not acceptable for a full-time skilled MT on production pay. $60K and more? Even this is achievable for the fastest working for companies that reward that, but increasingly rare. $70K? You'd better be working for yourself.

30k? Who U tryin to kid? Yeah if she wants to work everyday of the year on multiple accounts! - SassyPants

Hourly Rate Versus Cpl
Mar 01, 2011

Been at a cushy happy place clinic job for a few years, no audits, laid back, nice.  Making 18 d/h.  Type the same stuff, over and over.  Boring, but no nail biting.  I produce 300+/hr.  Should I take a position from home?  Will I be making a mistake? I need some opinions pleeease. ...

Regarding Hourly - They Upped Line Rate But...
Dec 01, 2011

... it is still not possible to make minimum wage even for those of us who edit VR at lightning speed, because there is no work during many of the shifts (mine).  I've been promised another account, told no other shift is available.  A line rate increase will not help me at all.  They have sent most of the work overseas now, lost a few accounts, and cannot afford to lose all US MTs.  I am aware of nine others besides me, who have lawyers. Quick, numerous complaints from ...

Time Versus Line Rate
May 18, 2011

The problem is not getting paid for time incurred.  You get paid for lines but not time.  Also, transcription is very gender-biased.  Management knows all you nice gals will never revolt and will just go on working for peanuts and accept being cheated every way they can figure out to cheat you.  ...

What's An Hourly Rate?
Dec 26, 2009

I am thinking of getting into medical transcription but all I read on here is negative posts about how little work is available and how you are all getting paid less than you were last year.  Now, please don't flame me, I know this is a cheeky question, but to be quite honest ".08 cpl" doesn't mean much to me.  Would anyone mind telling me what they actually earn per hour (when the work is there) and how many hours per day they generally work.  It will just give me an id ...

What's A Fairly Hourly Rate?
May 19, 2011

I've been out of the transcription loop for the last 2 years while I've been getting my registered nursing degree.   I did transcription for 20 years until I got tired of the nonsense.  I'm done with school, studying to take my boards, but have been offered an hourly part-time position.  Can someone tell me what hourly pay is going for now?   I was production paid for most of my transcribing years for the last few years I took an hourly employee ...

Average Hourly Rate
Jun 29, 2011

I'm re-applying to MQ as I desperately need a job.  My question is, are you all able to make at least $10.00 per hour still??  I ask because in searching around, it looks like $10.00 is the best I'm going to be able to do.  I do radiology so I will probably end up doing a lot of editing which I have never done before, so I'm just curious to see if $10.00 is realistic doing both straight typing and/or editing?  Any info appreciated.  Such a shame that its c ...

What Is A Fair Hourly Rate?
Mar 29, 2014

Can anybody please tell me what is a fair hourly rate for a transcriptionist in a single-doctor office in Texas? The last time I worked as an MT in a clinic was 18 years ago. I then worked for a large hospital and made about $9 more an hour than my highest clinic pay. After getting laid off, I worked for N for a few months and have been out of the MT field for a little over a year. Thanks in advance! ...

Production Pay MT Job Versus Hourly Pay MT Job
Apr 13, 2013

So, I am considering applying for an MT position with a local clinic for an hourly wage and bennies. I woud have to be in-house for a year and then could come home. I work for a large MTSO now that has had many changes recently, and I am uncertain of my future with them or this business PERIOD! I have been contemplating getting out of this line of work altogether and going back to school, but with my age and needing to work to support my family I am not sure this is a good choice eithe ...

Is An Hourly Rate For QA/editor Unusual?
Jul 11, 2011

Also, how much experience do Account Manager/Shift Manager types have?  Years ago I worked for a couple of MTSOs and my "supervisors" had less experience than me (and would have to ask me to figure out blanks in reports) so I'm guessing its often just a matter of how long you've been there and who you know and sometimes how much you're willing to put up with (one supervisor bragged that she worked about 20 hours a day). ...

Update On Fair Hourly Rate Question
Apr 05, 2014

Last week I asked what you all thought was a fair hourly rate for a one-doctor clinic MT. I went to the interview on Tuesday. The job ad was for a "medical records transcriptionist." The office uses an EMR. The nurse practitioner uses the EMR, but the doctor uses a piece of paper that resembles the EMR screen and checks the appropriate boxes and writes additional comments. The job is to take those papers and input the data in the EMR. It's not actual transcription, no headset or foot pedal ...

Line Rate For 65 Printable Character Line
Jul 19, 2011

When a company states a line rate for  a "65 printable character line" does that mean they do not pay for spaces?    I saw an ad saying they pay the highest in the business, which was about 8.5 cents for 65 printable character line.  That to me says without spaces, as it is not a printable character, so that would be a horrible rate surely not one of the best in the business.  Wonder why there is no respect for our thumbs !!!!   ...

Gross Line Versus 65 Character Line
Aug 19, 2010

VR Rate Versus Straight Typing
Apr 16, 2014

I really wish I understood the logic behind paying 4 cpl for VR as opposed to 8 for straight typing.  Do these people think it takes us exactly half the time?  I understand being paid a little less, but it should be around 6 cpl.  We still have to listen to the dictation, which takes the same time.  What about the providers we basically have to type the whole report for?  Yet we get the 4 cpl because it's VR.  So unfair.  Did they do some type of study tha ...

PT Line Rate Cut
Nov 25, 2009

I  know a lot of us wonder what the reason is for PT status MTs to lose 1/2 cpl.  We have been told that it is because at some point we could possibly switch to FT.  If our bank, where we have our checking and savings accounts would send us a letter telling us that starting next month we would have to start paying $200 per month for our house payment, even though we do not own a house, but this was just in case some day we might, I think we would all tell that bank they were nuts ...
