It was much easier than I thought -- but I ended up doing it myself because BestBuy didn't carry the two 1 GB "sticks" I needed, but did helpfully tell me what I needed.
Without naming companies, when I plugged what I needed into Amazon, manufacturer of the "sticks"'s website was mentioned to-make-sure you bought what you needed -- buffered/unbuffered (I have no idea what that means, but I needed unbuffered).
That company has a downloadable scan that tells you exactly what you need -- which you might then copy the specifications of and part number and buy (cheaper) from Amazon -- which I was too scared to do.
Anyway, for $60 my laptop (an almost 10 year old "better" HP Pavilion) is cooking with gas and I plan to upgrade to Windows 7 (because I hear Windows 8 is the new "vista") next paycheck ... oh, for those like me who are new to this, apparently the much cheaper "builder" and/or OEM Windows systems for sale apparently are not what you need, so keep searching ... I found what I think is the "real thing" for about $100 (the OEM versions run around $70).
