For those considering a switch to nursing - Catwoman

Something to consider before you invest in training.  Not saying don't do it, just be aware that you're not guaranteed a job when you graduate.

http://money.cnn.com/2013/01/14/news/economy/nursing-jobs-new-grads/index.html?iid=HP_LN&hpt=hp_t2

Right. Pretty much the same as this profession. - No new grads needed. sm

Plenty of experienced RNs looking for jobs due to spousal layoffs, etc., or like the article said vets staying longer for better retirement benefits.

Not a good outlook unless you know someone or are willing to take a low-paying job just to get experience. It's best to network amongst the community, take an on-site secretary job and network. Take a medical assisting job and network. Anything to network, network, network.

Must depend on where you live... - betsy

I know a new 24-year-old grad right out of school this past year who tried at a local hospital; no go, but it was because she was a smoker, the fool (her mother was ready to kill her). She did get hired at a nursing home third shift and stuck it out a few months while applying to a few more places. Long story short, she just got hired on at the local children's hospital starting out at $25 an hour, so it looks like it can be done.

It can. My local hospital system has just started what - me

they call a nurse extern program. They hire nursing students who are in their senior year of school, so that if they do well they already have a job before they graduate. They also have a new graduate program.

The medical field is having to do a lot of evolving the last couple of years and I think for the most part a couple of years from now will be nothing like it is currently. I don't care what job you have, medical or otherwise, that these days you just can't get too comfortable where you are and need to constantly be trying to get new skills/training.

Yes, the medical field is changing, as is everything else. I was told recently that submitting a resume and going to companies would not get me a job. I needed to network. When I asked for examples of networking, I was told I needed to be at the right place at the right time and know the right people. This information came from an employment counselor. In other words, I guess you can be dumb as a rock, and if you can fulfil the three aforementioned things (place, time and people), you can get a job. What a messed up world!! I'm still learning. I'm from the old school. It was what you know, not who you know or where you happen to be.

Nursing jobs... - me

And as this article states, certain hospitals take on a certain number of new grads, which has left my girlfriend high and dry on shifts and work. She is supposed to be full-time and has been at her current job for over 10 years, and now she is only working 1 shift per week, as they are seriously overstaffed, and she is getting canceled all the time. How can you live by yourself just working 12 hours per week, especially in California? Thanks for the article. She has been wondering why they keep hiring.

MT to RN - Former MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I've been a nurse going on 2 years, and I have always had work. In fact, usually too much work. I find myself working 4-5, 12 hour shifts per week most of the time because I feel bad saying no. I'm happy I stayed focused and went to nursing school. I would tell anyone that is considering it to do it.

That is what the nurses would do where I worked. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
They were more than happy to work 12-hour shifts and double back. It meant more money. No need to hire new RNs when the current ones are willing to go above and beyond. I just worry that patient care is at risk working RNs too long of a shift and them losing focus. I would think it would be a risk management issue, but apparently not, as it sounds like the practice is still in place of working very long hours on very little sleep.

Where do you live, east fungoo. No job is guaranteed when getting out of school. I'd rather do nursing any day over transcription.

Nursing and MT - me

[ In Reply To ..]
I would not want to transition to nursing. I make more than all the nurses I know, which are several of them, both in hourly rate and monthly by far. I made 7 times more this month than my best friend, a nurse, did despite all the holidays and doctors going on vacation I had. However, I have my own clients and do not work for nationals... big difference. I do not get benefits though and cannot even buy the insurance benefits she gets, as she is in a large group insurance from work at her hospital.

Bottom line - Anonymous

[ In Reply To ..]
When you factor in the benefits and insurance plus having to pay your own tazes, you do not make more than your nursing friends. Also, they probably belong to a union, which means they have some representation at work.
dont forget the pension - ever so important
[ In Reply To ..]
We have a big fat 0 for retirement!
Do you think anybody will get a pension in 10-15 years? - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
No. They are taking this away everywhere. What I put away in savings each month is more than her pension. Plus, I am able to stand up for myself directly and not have to wonder if my union ever will, but the nurses I know are not in a union. They are overhiring nurses in the hospitals and canceling their shifts left and right.
Pension - Anonymous
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, I do think people who work at hospitals will get pensions. Most of them offer decent 401K plans with an employer match. It must be different in your area; there is a nursing shortage where I live and new grads do get hired.
Just so you know - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
Pension plans and 401K plans are 2 completely separate things. Most pension plans are going by the wayside, as in they are not being offered to new employees--just the 401K. People who started working with a company that had a pension are most likely grandfathered in, so they would be eligible for that come retirement. This is across the board in terms of industries (excepting, of course, any public job like teacher, FF, or police). Private industries are definitely moving away from unsustainable pension plans.
No union... even with benefits.. - me
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, even with my overhead, paying insurance premiums, etc., I do make a lot more than her...per hour, per week, per month. Any way you slice it. I am also not getting canceled on shifts or getting sent home early as she is. Their hospital is not unionized, and my other friends who are nurses... same thing. Even with my significant pay cut, I still make considerably more than she does. She only makes $28 per hour (night shift/10 years' experience) and no tax write-offs except transportation. I make several times more than that with more tax write-offs that you can imagine. It is all just relative.

Best friend is a RN and.... - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
She is seeing something similar to us. Increased patient loads with no increase in pain. She fears she is going to make a mistake because of the heavy patient load and lose her license. She's been in it 2 years now and is wondering why she chose that field now. When she started the major hospital system she works for had no more than 5 patients per nurse. Now it is 7-8. She works on the renal floor so these patients are all chronically ill with multiple problems - it's not the easy appendectomy that is in/out patient.

Nursing
Feb 17, 2010

After reading some posts on here written by nurses, it intrigues me why a nurse would want to get into the rat's nest world of MT.  Is it the lure of a work-at-home job?  Or is there something else I'm not aware of?  I was just reading on a nursing forum where many were complaining of being called off or being required to float, having their hours permanently cut back due to critical shortages and/or low census, even having foreign nurses brought in at a lower ...

MT To Nursing
Mar 30, 2010

Any one out there going to nursing school, or at least starting with getting the prereqs out of the way, take a nurse aide job to help gain experience?  There are quite a few CNA positions at our local hospital.  Although I'm not a CNA, but working on pursuing my nursing degree, but I am considering taking a pay cut to do nurse aide work to gain the experience.  Just wondered if anyone else out there did this.  The only thing that scares me is that I've been at home ...

Decision To Go Back To School For Nursing?

Has anyone made the decision to go back to school for nursing?  I am 45 years old and am seriously considering going to school this fall.  I would be starting from scratch as I have no college education.  I am debating on whether to pursue an associates (RN) or bachelors degree (BSN).  I am wondering if anyone else near my age is doing this and how are they faring.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  ...

Nursing School And Loan Questions
Sep 08, 2011

Anyone seriously considering this?  I am concerned about the money issue, of course.  Did anyone receive a student loan that was enough to pay for books, supplies and have a little extra left over for living?  It's been so long since DH had a student loan, I can't remember anything about that.  I would still work part-time, of course, but that wouldn't put food on the table. I just can't stay in this proffession anymore, have to do something to get out of ...

Does Anyone Think That Coding Is Possibly As Hard As Nursing? SM
Apr 18, 2012

I am 3/4 through the Andrew's coding course and it is HARD!!!  Sometimes I think I wish I went into nursing.  A 2-year degree and you can start (in my area at least) at 30 an hour.  With coding, at my local hospital, they start at 26 an hour for inpatient coders, BUT you need experience!  I feel it may take me a few years to get up to the pay rate of 26/hour, and in between I will have to go back to school to learn ICD-10 and pass even more tests. AND, by the time I am ...

Thinking Of Going Into Nursing, Seeking Opinions
Jan 05, 2013

I just need opinions.  Due to pay cuts left and right having to complete with India, micromanaging, increasingly having to compete with India for work even within the same MTSOs we work for, having to worry about our USA-only companies being sold to bigger ones that hire offshore workers, continually having great accounts only to be told "oh they're going to VR but you'll still be doing ALL the editing" only to lose your account a month later, etc, I'm just plain sick of this ...

Hoping To Start Nursing In 2015 At 35
Nov 20, 2014

Hoping to start a nursing program.  I am 35 and have been a medical transcriptionist since graduating from high school.  I would like to eventually obtain a Master's in nursing.  I have been planning this for a while (almost two years), but I've been really nervous, so I have kind of put things off.  I think one thing I'm nervous about is it is my first time going to college.  I was trained for medical transcription at a technical school while still in hig ...

I am sweating this out, as everyone else has, and it is not working for me.  The rules are too vague, the training insufficient, and I am struggling with doing whatever I can to get through the report and trying to correct "correctly" - whatever way that really is, there is no explanation.  I don't know when to use F11.  I gave ASR a 4-month try 4-5 (?) years ago when it first was implemented, and see similar non-recognition issues, similar heading issues, and probably I am ...
