Upgrading my RAM any suggestions - MThired

Hi: I was hired last week but when they did the test on the computer I was 0.5 RAM shy of being able to sign paperwork. I need to put in 1 more RAM for my computer to fit the profile.

I have a friend coming over to help me pick out the RAM stick and put it in next weekend. Are there any dos and don'ts for this? I do not want to mess this up, because this job means a lot to me and the recruiter is being patient in waiting for me to get my computer up to speed.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice on this from those who have gone through this process. I never upgraded a computer myself before and this is such a small one I don't want to mess it up or the job offer!

but unless your friend is a techie, I would take the computer to a shop for installing more RAM. Sounds like you have a good fish on the hook, and you don't want to lose it by jerking the line too quickly. :o)

I had help from my family -- son-in-law. He is by no means a computer tech, but still very knowledgeable about computers. He just watched the instructional video on You Tube, which gives very good directions. They say you do not have to be a specialist or professional computer tech to do this. Just follow every step and it should not be a problem. It can be dangerous, so do exactly what they say, so you do not get shocked while instilling RAM.

The main thing is that you get the correct RAM. There is RD RAM and SD RAM and you can't mix them up. I am not the computer geek but this was the easiest thing to do. Turn off the computer. I did open the case. I took the RAM stick with me to BestBuy and got that larger RAM sticks came home. Plugged them in the slots. I had 4 slots to expand so it was very easy. Put the case back on. Boot up the computer. VOILA!!

Here's a link to a thread I started where a poster took the time to explain to me how to install the extra RAM, etc. Her post was a HUGE help to me, so I'm passing it along for you.

If you have an old computer not in use, you can "cannibalize" the memory card from that one and save yourself some $$$, too (that's what I did).

The whole thing took under 5 minutes.

Truly appreciate it!!! I am scared about ruining my now computer the way it is as it is almost up to spec. But I also don't want to run out and get something new, too expensive... Sigh... I will look at this and maybe will help me get insight into what to do. Only 0.5 RAM shy. I am so pathetic! I say that with a smile because that's always the way it goes, nearly get hired then bam something else... Thanks for your help!

I was scared to death I'd mess something up with my computer, too, but it was SOOOO incredibly easy and just as the poster said it would be, including to make sure you push hard enough on the new memory card so you hear it click into place.

I have no idea who posted those instructions for me, but I give silent thanks to them every day for saving me a fistful of money AND making me realize there really are some things I can do for myself, quite the morale booster for a technoidiot like me, LOL!

I used to FOR YEARS and years, just hit shift H and typed in cur and it spelled </CURRENT MEDICATIONS/> Now with this 6.1 upgrade, it spells out </CURRENT ALLERGIES/> and I am messing up big time with reports. I am looking for suggestions for a keyboard. I have the Logitech Illuminated wired keyboard presently with a plastic cover, which I really like, but the cover is pushing over the f, g and h keys. Is there a keyboard out there that can withstand our hours of typing?
