Webmedx Shorthand users--a question. - Hurting hands

I use Shorthand with the new Enterprise system.  SH seems really sluggish on ISR reports. Frequently it will not expand the shortcut and needs to be repeated, or I just give up and type it "longhand."  I have tried several Preference settings but nothing seems to help. Also deleted all unnecessary programs and do not run any other program with SH and EP, cleared all cookies, keep the computer maintained (defrag, cleanup). Before calling IT about this, thought I would ask here first. Thanks!

I would suggest joining the Shorthand users' group (an email group) at Webmedx (ask STM for how to join if you're not yet a member). Some in the email group have exchanged best settings. If those settings don't work, it's most likely an Enterprise or connectivity issue since it only affects some.

First, did you recently get a new computer, one with the "new" Norton antivirus with all the bells and whistles? If so, that is more than likely the problem. I am part of the shorthand mail group and as people got new computers, they were having this problem. A group of them worked with Solution center and they removed everything except for the stand-alone virus program, and it fixed the SH problem. Nothing else seems to help. However, when someone posted to call the solution center, they were told by the trainer NOT to do this. My opinion is that they have a lot invested in this Norton program and don't want to do away with it. I would call anyway and if you get lucky you may get a sympathetic person who knows about this at solution center. It is hit and miss, many have been left in the lurch since this happened. I can tell you I have talked with SH and done EVERYTHING recommended, AND read the entire manual, and no changes helped, except the above.

One thing that they don't tell you is that Shorthand should be the LAST thing you load. So open up Enterprise, email, everything before Shorthand. This was a tip I received long ago from the guy who sold me Shorthand.

You are one of the lucky ones then! In the e-mail group, multiple people have had problems. I think some of the newer computers also have a bit more memory. I was told that the Norton Endpoint Protection (do you have that on your coomputer?) required a lot of memory, and this was causing the problem.

I did know about opening SH last, and I also had any other program off except community page and mail, and these steps did help, but I still had lags.

What worked for some in our e-mail group did not work for others, but certainly go ahead and post and see if anyone has any other suggestions. It is frustrating to have it not work well, good luck!

which wasn't the problem at all. Hope this is being discussed in the Shorthand user's group as there were people talking about switching to IT and other programs when it wasn't a Shorthand problem to begin with. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing!

You will not find this discussed in the e-mail group, as we were told NOT to mention it or tell people to call Solution Center. They still officially continue to blame SH. Some have called Solution center and have been told to write us for help, BUT we are moderated and some have been in trouble for telling people to call solution center! Very very frustrated with the "powers that be!" I received private e-mails informing me of the problem from multiple people. Some have been left with bad problems and no solution given. Opening SH last and having all other programs off DOES help and it makes it usable, but it still often will not expand!
Why can't they just admit it when they're wrong? Why are they covering - this up?

Are they afraid people will start deleting Norton or something? I don't get it. Why don't they want people to know what the issue is?
In my experience, the guys at the Solutions Center know very - little about SH, now more than before but little.

EXACTLY! Once I found out the problem and that there are so many still suffering with this problem in the dark, I was MAD! But, you won't get anyone officially to admit any of this. I only know because I spoke to several who were in the initial group when they were trying to figure out what was wrong, and I was asked not to use their names, or they could get in trouble!

Now, you can darn well bet if the tech people or trainers or managers had to work and have to redo half their entries because it didn't come out right, it would be fixed PRONTO! Okay, off my soap box again!

Mine works ok most of the time now and I never got anyone to remove the Symantec. It still hangs part of the time, but I can bear it. I think they want the full virus and firewall protection so they are just letting the rest of us suffer, IMO. The ones who had it corrected have the stand-alone version virus protection and are using Windows firewall.

Thanks everyone! I will try the easy fixes first, and if it still lags, will call the Solution Center. The 2 guys I deal with the most seem pretty knowledgeable, and if necessary, maybe I can sweet-talk my way into a solution. : )

Loading SH last seems to be the fix for me, at least for now. I tend to jinx myself when I say stuff like that, so all of your suggestions are in my file. I read the SH manual, so not sure how I missed that (read the troubleshooting section last night and found it). Thanks again everyone. You really came through.

I have been doing this way too long to just accept that this takes so long to do...I have made many macros on shorthand and if they are more than a word or so long (many of my macros are many sentences/paragraphs long) it takes FOREVER for the program to type it all in.  I am already having to click WAY too much to just get into the stinking job that I am just hoping that someone has a way to fix this?!?!  PLEASE HELP!! ...

For example,  I have my headings entered in as follows:  xpmh = PAST MEDICAL HISTORY: I will type my abbreviation and hit my space bar twice and while the abbreviation is still expanding, I will start my sentence, but if I hit the shift key and the first letter of the first word of my sentence too soon, I will get stuck in caps lock without the caps lock button being pushed.  Then if I hit shift and any letter (to capitalize), it will all be in lowercase as if caps lock is on, bu ...

Any BayScribe Users Out There?

I started with a company using BayScribe.  I have a rather unusual problem.  The BayScribe expander will not function in the document.  I can bring it up via Control F3 and can add entries, but they will not expand.  When my machine is entered remotely, that user IS able to expand, but within the same session, I still cannot expand.  I have uninstall, reinstalled, Norton off, IE setting fine.  Toggling on and off makes no difference.  I have been troubleshootin ...

Hi Everyone - I need some help from the DocQScribe users. I had a little trouble with my computer earlier today.  Got it up and running again, but now when I go into DQS, everything works except for Control+J (Jump) and Control+D (to go to demo screen).  Is this a problem in a setting for DQS?  Is it my computer?  My keyboard?  I also use Shorthand word expander and have checked all the settings in there they all look good. I am looking for Instant Text users who may be able to get me headed in the right direction in regards to compilations.  I have been using Instant Text for quite a while now, only adding things on the fly, or using the enrich feature.  I do not understand the compilation feature it seems.  Whenever, I try to utilize this feature I come up with phrases that I really will never hear again, odd things within reports.  For example, the patient's dog's name - lol!&n ...

I do the copying process as a means of building up Dragon document analysis (once it's done the document is destroyed). I now work where outside expanders are not an option and I'm beginning to think I can't even type without my Instant Text.     Anybody else out there been through this and is there any hope at the end of the tunnel?  I'm just finding it almost impossible to adapt, not to mention remember the shortcuts on a regular expander (AutoCorrect) - ugh! ...

Fellow Enterprise platform users, have you ever lost the red box around the text and wondered why? Once it is gone you can no longer move about the report with ease, the facility to go to a particular place by Alt-R or double click no longer works. If anyone has figured out why this happens - i.e., have I inadvertently hit a combination of keystrokes that caused this, have I deleted some bit of ISR that was crucial to the red text box? Very confusing and when you are in a 10 minute long report ...

I've been using an old version(4.3) with the OK of the company I transcribe for.  But I'm now having so many technical issues that I need to install the upgrade of 4.97.394. The company I work for just switched to the Emdat/Inscribe platform 2 weeks ago and as such we are still adjusting :-)Things have worked fine so far, but when trying to download dictations after logging in, I keep getting the same message..."There was a problem downloading the file. Would you like to retry?" (Of course I have, but it never loads.) The dictation tries to load (I see it in the green bar at the bottom) but never makes it. Other MTs have had the same problem today but a System Rest ...

Hi.  My work computer is unstable, freezing up, not able to run programs, etc., so I'll be buying a new one this evening.
