Condolences to XP users - mom22

Posted: Jan 12, 2015

I just have to send out some Monday wishes for all those with XP who woke up to a nice e-mail that they would have to acquire a new computer.  Considering it is barely after Christmas, and it just is one thing followed by another, I'm not sure how they expect you to do this on less pay, and I'm sure this created stress for a lot of people. And I just thought some warm wishes and prayers in your direction were warranted this morning.

:(

Question - XP user

[ In Reply To ..]
When did you get the e-mail? I haven't gotten anything.

probably only for certain accounts/platforms - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I know some accounts still require XP since they are privately owned and nuance cannot force them to upgrade.

Ambulatory - mom22

[ In Reply To ..]
We got the e-mail Friday, so I saw it late last night. A detailed email that they are even paying 30 min of training to review. If you have XP, Inscribe 6 won't use it. So if you don't use Inscribe, I guess it won't matter. I probably should have specified that before I freaked everyone out!

I am surprised you're just getting this now. This - took place last year and there really

[ In Reply To ..]
aren't many places, if any, that allow XP anymore. The reason, Windows no longer supports this version (i.e. updates, etc.) I know it's not an expense you were planning for right now, but if you ever plan on going to another company, it'll need to be done. Rather than a whole new computer, can you possibly upgrade your windows version instead cheaper ?

I'm okay - mom22

[ In Reply To ..]
Luckily, I'm okay. I just feel for everyone who got hit with this and will have to purchase another computer. It breaks my heart to think they might be struggling already, and now this.

I find this ridiculous. If you worked in an office.. - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
Would you have to purchase a new computer to take to work with you? No, you wouldn't. This is fine and dandy for an IC, but an EMPLOYEE having to provide their own PC? I don't understand how these companies get away with it.

Time frame - mom22

[ In Reply To ..]
We just updated within the past month to the most recent version of the platform. Now this. And they are being very generous. We had to respond by today with our operating system, and if you had XP, you have all these steps. Then they so generously told them they have until a deadline to get everything purchased and set up, and honestly, it's not a lot of time to bank $ for a computer right after Christmas. Oh, but they will give you a $500 loan per year for computer equipment, so you can just take out a loan with them. Uh, not! I agree with you. If you are an employee, and they are upgrading to something you don't have, they should loan you the equipment. But I guess that's unheard of....sort of like not paying OOW time even though we are required to be there.

Apply at Opti-Script... - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
They supply a computer, they pay better (though no bonuses, that I know of) and they are very nice people. I used to work there, but I really wanted QA work, so I moved on. Anyway, they are hiring right now. Check the job seeker's board. It's a really good company. Truth.

I know plenty of employees in other industries that must - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
purchase and supply their own equipment and uniforms. If it's in the contract, and an employee agrees to and signs the contract, then that's the way the cookie crumbles. I've been an employee MT for many years for various companies. I have always supplied my own PC. Nothing new.

To be fair... - mom22

[ In Reply To ..]
To be fair, I've never used someone else's equipment. I happen to have a lot of empathy for people, coming 2 weeks off of Christmas, having to make a large purchase that they may not have the money for simply because the operating system they have used with that platform needs an update. Find the money or lose your job, and then who is to say they're not going to turn around in another 2 weeks and change something else, and you lose your job?

As I said earlier, I'm one of the lucky ones. My operating system is fine, but that doesn't cause me to worry less about the financial woes of other people, some of who have had their income cut drastically already, and some of who I work side by side with (in a virtual kinda way). It might be how the cookie crumbles, but I happen to think they could have handled it, and the time frame, a little better. My personal opinion.

I just wonder....what is next???

If you are an employee, there usually is no contract. Contracts - usually happen in IC situations.

[ In Reply To ..]
Most states these days are "at will" states which means there is definately no contract for employees. They can refuse to hire you if you don't have the right stuff and fire you if you sneezed impolitely and they weren't even around to hear it.
Achoo! - mom22
[ In Reply To ..]
You have that right. They need no reason and can pretty much do whatever they want from what I'm seeing. If you wanna work there, you have to play by their rules, no matter how ridiculous or unfair. To be honest, there was SO much training stuff, I don't know what all I signed. Hope I get to keep my kidneys!

Just because you've always done it, doesn't make it right - x

Look for a refurbished computer. sm - .

[ In Reply To ..]
My PC went caput last year, and I was able to buy a nice refurbished Dell PC with Windows 7 for less than $150. It works just fine almost a year later. Got it from KMart on line.

What I would do is go on eBay or Craigslist - and buy some cheap, refurbished - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
beater PC with non-XP software on it for work. Especially since this type of work won't be around much longer. No sense in getting all the bells and whistles just to do MT.

Then I'd either clean out all the speed-killing Nuance software from the XP computer, and use it for myself. Either that, or get myself a nice little laptop with all the bells and whistles for personal use.

Windows XP to windows 7 - rock bottom

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry to hear that you were given such a short deadline to get a new computer.

Word of caution: Craiglist and Ebay for electronics is a crapshoot. Enter at your own risk.

You can get a good basic windows 7 even new for a few hundred.

Otherwise, I would call legit computer places in your locale and ask them if they have refurbished windows 7, etc.

Computers that ran XP will likely not be fast enough to efficiently run windows 7.

Plus you will need much more RAM than the XP systems had, and you likely do not have enough slots for that much RAM.

Tiger Direct is a legit place to get a used computer online. I've only known 1 person who did that but he never had a problem.

Microcenter is another good place - Chi-town MT

I bought my computer from them last summer and it's a dream. Mine came with Windows 7.

I'm trying to get a new system set up on my new computer and was just curious about Benchmark.   Does anyone currently use it and, if so, do you find it a useful resource?  I hate to spend $200 on something that isn't actually helpful and a time-saver.  If you use it, can you share which features it offers that you find the most beneficial?  And, conversely, if it has any features you find not so helpful?  Do you consider it to have been a good investment? Enterprise Users Query About
Nov 09, 2014

Fellow Enterprise platform users, have you ever lost the red box around the text and wondered why? Once it is gone you can no longer move about the report with ease, the facility to go to a particular place by Alt-R or double click no longer works. If anyone has figured out why this happens - i.e., have I inadvertently hit a combination of keystrokes that caused this, have I deleted some bit of ISR that was crucial to the red text box? Very confusing and when you are in a 10 minute long report ...

I've been using an old version(4.3) with the OK of the company I transcribe for.  But I'm now having so many technical issues that I need to install the upgrade of 4.97.394. A previous upgrade required the use of the InScribe internal player.  I tried this, bought 2 different foot pedals, and neither one worked for me, as both interfered with my expansions. One pedal I tried was the Start-Stop.  If I was in the process of starting or stopping play at the same time I wa ...

Hi.  My work computer is unstable, freezing up, not able to run programs, etc., so I'll be buying a new one this evening. I currently use Windows XP and MS Office and it seems like I was told that's what I needed for compatibility, but I don't know if I'm rembering that correctly as it's been years ago.  Anyway, I'm sure a new computer will not come with Windows XP - and I'm not sure exactly what is compatible with the Emdat program.  If you u ...
