SUGGESTIONS PLEASE! - movingonup

First the good news! I recently landed what I think will be a great job for me, working for a one-woman service doing only one specialty, and only 2 physicians.

The bad news....I was planning to move to rural Mississippi, moving in with my daughter and her family and sharing her very nice big house. My problem is there is no DSL service in the area for internet. Only satelllite. I know I see on almost all job ads that the satellite just doesn't work.

I know a lot of you fellow MTs live in rural areas. Do you use satellite, if so, does it work with downloading dictations, etc.

Any answers or suggestions would be so appreciated. I have everything set to move..

Unless you'll be working on some particular platform, dialup internet would probably work just fine. See how you'll be receiving the voice files and in what manner you'll be returning your work (FTP/Word, etc). It might take a few minutes to d/l your audio files, but as long as you're not using one of the "platforms," then dialup should work - and be pretty inexpensive.

I live in the middle of nowhere. No DSL, no cable, for sure no FIOS. If you use dialup, you have a death wish. Do you have cell phone service? A lot of companies won't let you use wireless, so a jetpack is out. But in the dinosaur days, prior to the jetpack, there was only an aircard or a single USB modem. The latter is what I still use. It's a dedicated connection, plugs into only one device, like a USB port on your computer. It becomes an ethernet connection. It is NOT wireless. If you have a laptop and you want to go into another room, you have to unplug it from the desktop and plug it into a USB port on your laptop. It is a broadband LTE connection. Mine is through Verizon, it's the Pantech UML 290. Check it out. You can buy one outright for $20 on ebay or wherever,so don't need a contract, but will need a data plan from Verizon. The other carriers have their own versions of these modems, but Verizon works the best where I live. DSL is 768 kg. My modem isn't FIOS, but it downloads on average 10 MB. DSL isn't even 1 MB. If I didn't have this little modem, I would be stuck with dialup. You can't even watch a news clip with dialup. There could be a tornado coming and by the time your dialup downloaded the weather channel, you would be long gone. Check it out. It's been a true lifesaver for me.

Thanks for your response. This was very helpful information. I contacted Verizon, my cell phone carrier and it sounds good. If you are so far out, you will not get the "speed" that DSL offers. They checked out my new address, and I am in the intermediate zone for service. So, I should expect between 5-12 downloading and 3-5 upload. This should work, I HOPE. Do you work for a service and are using this? I work for a very small one-woman company and only part time, so hopefully this will work. Any other information about this product will be useful, i.e. does it ever go down?, is is consistent in speed, does the weather have anything to do with performance? I am in an "extended" area of LTE. Interestingly, about 800 feet due east of my house is "real" LTE, which happens to be a cow pasture. The cows evidently have better LTE than I do! You will be SO pleased with your internet connection. The weather has no effect, doesn't matter if it's cloudy, storming, nighttime, etc. I live in Florida, hurricanes are due soon, so a lightning surge can take out all my power, internet included, but I have everything on surge control and battery backup equipment, and my whole house has ZapCap through the electric company. I have little to no downtime with this connection. The consistency can fluctuate, but the speeds are so fast compared to DSL that you would never notice if your speed spiked to 9 MB, down to 5, up to 7, etc. On the very rare occasions when it has dropped to a 3G rather than 4G connection, it can hang up and slow down, but that has only happened to me 2-3 times in over 10 years, and never lasted more than an hour or two. Every brand of modem is usually backwards compatible to 3G, they just don't seem to like it very well. The work uploads and downloads fine, but you might see your email or a personal webpage slow down on 3G. There was one time a year or so ago when Verizon was in a panic because the whole southeast grid shut down. I called in to tech support, who explained the situation, said her queue was lit up like a Christmas tree with everyone calling, and they were working hard to fix the problem. It was up and running in a few hours. I have used this connection as an employee with 3 or 4 different MTSOs for well over 10 years. I know there must be some MTs out there who have this problem, and I hope they are aware of this alternative. When I started working for Medware way back in 2001, I was on dialup. My work was good and they were kind enough to let me stay, but it was a nightmare. I could type faster than the download, so I would type, wait for more download, type a little, wait for more download, etc. Horrible. You will have a blast with this connection. The only downside is that you won't be able to use it as an excuse for not working, because it is really very reliable! I did notice that Verizon has newer models than the 290, but the reviews seem to be better for the older model, maybe because it has a built-in antenna. You need to install software from a disc for the older model, but it isn't a big deal. I actually like having the software because I can check the statistics, speed, usage, etc. whenever I want, and it lets you know when it needs to update. I used to FOR YEARS and years, just hit shift H and typed in cur and it spelled </CURRENT MEDICATIONS/> Now with this 6.1 upgrade, it spells out </CURRENT ALLERGIES/> and I am messing up big time with reports. I can't make money with VR and I know there has to be a way for me to work faster or something. I type so much faster than I do editing. I am looking for suggestions for a keyboard. I have the Logitech Illuminated wired keyboard presently with a plastic cover, which I really like, but the cover is pushing over the f, g and h keys. Instead of wasting time advertising on the job board, reviewing resumes, etc., why not give some of us MTs those accounts? Why not at least OFFER your current MTs more work, before hiring more? I'll start off with some office supply suggestions. Code books have really thin pages, and really teeny writing, so you will want to highlight a FEW choice items.
