Recommendations for Headsets - Olive

Posted: Jan 29, 2012

Hi, Folks,

So, my company sweetly sent me a dictaphone stethascope-style headset, but it's really uncomfortable for me.  Can you recommend a more comfortable, good-sounding headset that you might have found?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I had a set of the stethoscope type and loved them. It does take some time to get used to having them in your ears. My ears really ached, but I eventually got used to it. I really like the sound quality, though. I do recommend using covers and cleaning them often. I really haven't found another type that I like more. My company sent me a set that wraps around the back of my head. The sound quality is good, but they don't fit my head well - keep slipping off.

I have stethetscope type, but they did take getting used to. The ones I have are really lightweight, excellent sounds quality, and they never have that problem of where one ear works, the other doesn't. I don't know who makes them, but the Model is Sh-50-RA.5 mm right angle.

I get mine at Executive Communications. Their website is a pain to navigate for headsets, but I think you can contact someone directly to help you. Prices are good, but cheapest if you buy off the Internet rather than phone.

About 5 years ago, when I was actually making money at this job, I purchased a set of noise-reducing Bose headsets with the ultra-comfy ear surrounds. It sits over your ears and is extremely comfortable. Plus, living near a Navy base, it really cuts out the noise of the jet jockeys when they are doing maneuvers, especially in the summertime, while I'm working. They can, of course, also be used for music, plane rides, etc. They run on batteries, and I purchased a set of rechargables, so I never run out.

They aren't cheap though...
I have these, too - Happy MT Robin

Love them. Bose redesigned them a couple of years ago and made the cord removable, thankfully, so when my cat gets hold of it despite my best efforts, I only have to replace the cord.

The times I have been without these and have had to go back to regular headsets or ear buds, I have been miserable. There is a HUGE reduction in outside noise, even that from the keyboard, that for me makes a huge difference in the ease and productivity of my day.
I loved those too, but... - CB

found they just didn't hold up to the wear and tear of daily use for me (originally bought them for plane flights). I couldn't justify replacing them so often at $300 a pop. For me, it was the plastic sides of the headband that would break. Before that, I used the stethoscope-style, and then Dictaphone, but am no longer a fan of the ear-bud types. Right now I'm using Koss KTX PRO1 titanium headphones. A great price (around $15), so inexpensive enough to keep an extra pair or two as backup. They also have volume control, which is a must for me.

Did you have to order those or did you get - mthead

them from a big-box store like Best Buy, etc?
I order them from Amazon.. - CB

My first set in September was $13. Looks like they've gone up just a little.

I loved mine. Sadly, my son accidentally - mthead

clipped one of the cords with a scissor and although my hubby tried to splice the ends together, the sound was never the same. Can't buy a new set just yet :-(

Tip for you Sweetpea - Smallhead

I have a small head and always have trouble with headsets slipping off. For the ones that wrap around back you can hook one of those claw clips (made for putting hair up) in your hair just beneath the band that goes around. It keeps it up where it is supposed to be. :)

May I ask what the name/model of the headphones are? I am always looking for another decent pair and like the type that go around the back of the head like that.

Thanks for the tip. That just might work. Feel silly for not thinking of that myself. The headphones I'm using are by Logitech. I do like the sound quality. I'm also finding that we don't necessarily have to use headphones from a transcription equipment company. I think we can find good quality headphones at Best Buy, Walmart, etc.

Thanks again for the tip!!

I use skullcandy earbuds now, used to use - sm - Zorro

just regular stereo headphones (the big kind), but my last pair was a disappointment and did not fit well so now my DH uses them and loves them. I bought $10 skullcandy earbuds and love them, very comfortable and blocks out much of the noise in my house. I will probably get a new pair of regular headphones though as a backup, but I do not miss the sweaty ears I have with that style, no sweat with the earbuds. The only downside is they skullcandy only last a few months, though I did get the more expensive set this time so will see how it goes. Probably more cost effective to go back to the headphones in the long run.

I hse noise-cancelling headphones - countrygirlMT

Mine are Sony MDR-NC7, I think I paid $35 for them at Target. I also use a Koss EQ50 3-band stereo equalizer attached to them and run through my speakers. This allows me to manually control the volume either up or down as well as adds quality to the dictation. Between my computer volume, the wave player volume, my speaker volume, and the equalizer volume, that is 4 different volume controls. At some point I am going to break down and buy the Bose headphones, but I have used these Sony ones for almost 2 years and I never have any trouble hearing dictators (unless they are speaking from the bottom of a barrel).

Yes, you have to get used to having them on your head and the feeling of heaviness, but they do block out noises from the outside environment and the quality is great. A few months back I was on a long plane ride to Europe and used these headphones. My what a difference it made in watching the movie and blocking out the outside noises.

use not hse excuse the typo - countrygirlMT

Where Can I Get Magical QA Headsets
Oct 19, 2011

I transcribe and edit what I actually do hear, but get QA feedback from another planet.  I am not a newbie MT, though new on my current account.  I figure they must use secret magical headsets to hear what they do.  Often QA isn't even on the same page with each other even on account specs.  So, it must be the magical headsets.  Does anyone know where I can get the kind QA uses? ...

Transcription Headsets
Nov 25, 2013

I have been transcribing and editing for over 11 years and have ALWAYS used Spectra headsets, but having recently switched jobs where their platform could only be downloaded onto my personal computer and not my work computer, I've found that I'm not getting enough volume with the Spectras.
