Question for current Transcend MLS. Do you think - we will see pay changes, QA

Posted: Sep 13, 2012

changes, benefit changes come January 1?  My ex-TL said yes and now I am worried.  Do you think these "changes" will be better/worse?  I'm a single parent of 4 and worry I need to make a decision now on whether to continue here or not?  TIA

When the company I worked for was bought out by Nuance and we were fully integrated, my pay virtually was cut in half. Not saying it happens to everyone, but it certainly did to me.

When you say cut in half, is that because you went - from straight typing to VR.

We do VR at Transcend already so I am prepared for that. Is there a standard across the board payscale though that we'll be moved to is what my fear is I guess? I'm also seeing the QA horror stories. Will we be moved to that also. As far as scheduling, we have a lot of flexibility allowed. Will that continue or is there a mandatory schedule to work? Thanks for any info you can share. This merger has me freaked to say the least.

The company I worked for did both VR and straight and I still do a good mix of both. They way they count their lines, their highly difficult-to-obtain production bonus, lack of paid holidays and the way they pay their OT have all contributed. Also, we do run out of work a lot and since PTO only covers some of it, a lot of weeks I fall quite short of 40 hours. In the past year, I have gone through at least 6 supervisors, so there hasn't been a lot of consistency. On the plus side, all of my TLs have been really nice. Flexibility has never really been a problem but I think its all based on which accounts you work for and who your TL is. I hope for you it isn't such a rough transition. It may not be.

To try and answer some of your questions honestly and with my experience as an ex-Webmedx employee, here it goes:

They cut our pay yes, our line rates went down for both VR and straight transcription. This rate was based on the platform you work on and what level you are (I was assigned a level five acute, meaning I do all worktypes available on my accts and therefore, I get the highest line rate available for the platform I work on). Our platform of the former Webmedx was the highest pay rate last year out of all Nuance platforms, but that is probably because ours the least efficient (I'll be nice) to work on.

They give no extra incentive for being a CMT. No incentive for weekends. The only extra incentive or shift differential is after 10 p.m. and before 6 a.m. EST 7 days a week.

Flexible scheduling flew out the window, as we have to work are scheduled times period. No flex time unless permission is granted from your supervisor, except open flex time starts Friday evening until sun morning some time (not sure of the exact times as I don't do flex time). This is when you are supposed to make up for no work, appointments, etc.

I worked nearly the same shift for years literally and when Nuance finally took over completely, they changed our schedules saying we had to work at least 1 weekend day and they are big on changing schedules at the drop of a hat.

My experience with QA has been okay and not like the stories some have had, but we seemed to have retained a lot of our QA people from Webmedx so I think that is why my QA has been okay.

We also lost our paid holidays, you either work them or have to take PTO. They do offer a holiday incentive, but again not sure what that is. My sup is very tight on how many MTs or whatever the heck we are called now she lets off, meaning very few. My suggestion is to request holidays as early as possible and for that matter any PTO. Now, this is not to say that my supervisor isn't nice and responsive, she is for the most part. I cannot complain about that. Sadly, when the merger happened my original supervisor quit or was left go, not really sure what happened to her, so that might be something to be prepared for. Again, this did not happen to all as a couple of the Webmedx sups around at Nuance.

They cut the PTO rate accumulation down too. This will depend on how long you were with Transcend, if they do it the same way as they did with Webmedx, meaning our length of service carried over from Webmedx to determine our PTO rate of accummulation.

Insurance wise, the medical insurance cost was actually a little better, but that too flew out the window this month when they changed it to an extremely crappy insurance. I don't know if that will change again in January of 2013 or not, but I hope so.

I hope you Transcenders fair better than we Webmedxers did, but I would not hold my breath.

I have been one of the more fortunate ones with not running out of work a lot (although it is starting to happen to me more), but I know others have had major problems with low work or no work.

Some of these issues may be vary from supervior to supervisor.

Finally, everybody's situation is different and the decision for you to stay with the company or leave is based entirely upon what you feel is best for you.

My answers are based on my experiences and observations.

I hope this helps. I had fears to when they announced the merger. Only time will tell how the situation will play out for you all.

Good luck to you.
Thank you for sharing your experience. - --Transcender

The high end and low end of pay scale - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The highest end is 8.5 standard and 4.44444 (or whatever) for VR. I am not positive about the lowest, but I think newbies start off at 7is and 3ish. I lost the one link that led me to the payscale and incentive pay info and I can't find it anywhere in AlphaStaff.

High pay scale is for experienced. Pretty bad and, believe me, you do feel that half a cent difference (I assume some of you were making 9 c/line at Transcend, correct me if I'm wrong, I'm going by the lawsuit info). I went from 11.5 standard and 8.5 VR and it hurt, a lot, but even half a cent hurts when you are a high producer.

Obviously, yes. - anon

As of Jan 1, 2013 you will officially be Nuance, correct? That is my understanding of it.

So, I would expect 4 cpl VR/8 cpl straight.

You will also be under the same QA/QC nightmare the rest of us are.

Good luck.

Current 9 Year Transcend MLS. I Notice Nuance Hiring Ads
Sep 24, 2012

Is this common (the 1 yr exp only requirement).  Transcend has always required at least 3 years.  One has to wonder if the 1 year exp is an easy ploy to offer lower pay.  I worry about this since from what we can summize we will be moved to be in line with Nuance payscale at some point shortly.  Is anyone else make this 1 yr experience connection?  ...

Current CMT's - Is It Worth It?
Jan 08, 2011

If I take the CMT test the goal is to increase my income from my current earnings as a full time MT/ME.  But is it worth the $$ and time required to prepare for and take the CMT test?  I am confident that I would have no problem passing the test after adequate review, etc. So is it worth the effort?  Bottom line -- it will cost money to take the exam and it will cost money to either enroll in a review course or buy review materials to prepare for the exam. And the CMT credential ...
