Internet Explorer and other things. - burnedoutco

Posted: Aug 12, 2014

I just retired - Yeah!  Anyway, I had to use IE 8 while working at Nuance and it made my computer so, so slow.  On some sites, it froze.  The first thing I did on retirement was upgrade to IE 11, and you cannot believe the difference.  My internet now is super fast.

Also, I may not have retired completely if I could just have had more time off without pay.  For example, this week I have been sick and I had no PTO remaining.  I would have to have made up the time.  I have worked when I was sick and that is very difficult in terms of accuracy and speed when you are not feeling well.  The few days I got every year were just not enough to cover appointments, things I just had to do, and doing any kind of family thing.  These days had to cover sick days, holidays, and emergencies.  People do have lives outside of work.  We are human though these companies probably do not think we are.

They always seem to need people.  There might be a whole untapped amount of older people with lots of experience who would like to work part-time or work per diem and not be tied into a rigid schedule.   At the hospital where I used to work there were several older people who worked per diem.  It should be a win, win situation for everyone, i.e., no benefits to pay, having people work when they really need coverage and not work when there is no work without having to make up.  Of course, that makes sense so it will never happen.

Congratulations! I am happy for you and oh so envious. - I work 8 in 12 for just over min. wage

...so in other words, Nuisance gets one full half of my life and I still cannot afford food, let alone medicine.

I'm 60 and hope I can last until 62. I work on site. I was an MT until I got outsourced and now work in another department. Working part-time or per diem sounds like heaven to me but I am busier than I ever was as an MT and I know my bosses wouldn't allow it. I am tied into a very rigid schedule and so at this point the choice is not mine to make. Also, there is the issue of health insurance and benefits. In my opinion that is not a win-win situation as insurance is very expensive. Also, your 401K contributions stop. Yes, the freedom would be wonderful but there is a downside to everything. As far as part-time and per diem jobs, my opinion is that in the general marketplace that is the trend and it benefits mostly the employer as they save a bundle. It is only wonderful if the person is doing it by choice.

Now in regard to IE 8: If you were using Windows 7 or newer, you needed to upgrade your browser. Your computer may have run slow because you needed more RAM to run Nuance's programs, or maybe your internet connection was slow. You need to remember that things speeded up when you stopped working for Nuance, so that should tell you something, maybe it wasn't the browser that was the issue, it could have been any number of things.

Also, don't think that having to make up time for appointments is a Nuance issue, that is pretty much standard practice where I work, even though I have lots of PTO. I can't have time off unless there is someone to cover for me. We can use PTO to stay home when we are sick, but it only covers the first 3 days and after that we need a doctor's excuse. I guess what I am trying to say is that sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side. No matter where a person works, there are going to be issues and things we don't like.

Enjoy your retirement, counting the days until I can join you!

Enjoy your retirement and get some rest.

Unfortunately, we are not permitted to do that--sm - anon

We are required to use IE8 for reasons of compatibility. That is what I use for the platform, etc and I use google Chrome for other stuff (like searches). Chrome is definitely faster.

Internet Explorer
Jul 01, 2014

So many websites now are giving the message that the version of IE that we have to use in order to do our work for Nuance is obsolete, not supported. I'm wondering if that could be why my computer is running so slowly lately. (When I Google something now, I literally go back to my report and keep working while the Google page is coming up). It never used to be like this. Has anybody else noticed this? I even called my internet provider and upgraded to turbo speed over the weekend, but I ...

Internet Explorer 8 Question
Dec 01, 2011

It was STRONGLY suggested by my tech guy that I upgrade to IE8, as IE7 has many security risks.  Not to mention Gmail and some other sites all post that little blurb saying "I see you are using an outdated browser, etc, etc, etc.  But I use this PC for work, when companies do not provide equipment.  As a matter of fact, this was a work computer that I bought from a company. Anyway, how many companies, software, programs, etc are IE8 compatible?  Will I be shooting myself in ...

Instant Text With Internet Explorer 7 And/or 8
Mar 04, 2010

I have installed Internet Explorer 7 (and tried 8 too) and my Instant Text will not work.  It doesn't link up (even though it appears to be linked).  My version says Instant Text V Pro.  Should this work or do I need a newer version.  I cannot really find anything on the Internet regarding this problem.  When I looked at purchasing a new copy it said Instant Text V Pro, so I don't want to buy what I already have.  I have had this for many years though.&nbs ...

Anyone Having Trouble W/ Internet Explorer Homepage
Mar 08, 2012

every time you click on a link to anything? It even does it every time I click on a post here.  Driving me nuts.  Every time I open anything, I have to then close anywhere from 3-10 copies of my homepage.  Seems to be malware - tried scanning with first AVG, then Malware Bytes.  MWB didn't find anything, but AVG found 4 suspicious files, 2 of which were "healed" and deleted, the other two can't be.  It also seems to have disabled the "Add or Remove Programs" f ...

Desktop Icon & Internet Explorer Problems
Dec 30, 2011

Have any of you had this problem? (1)  Most days, when I first start my PC, the desktop icons won't appear.  I'll get the background screensaver picture, but nothing to click on.  Is there a certain combination of keys you can hit to make the icons appear?  Or to open Explorer?  Currently the only way I can deal with this is to shut down the PC and then restart it.  Sometimes it takes as many as 4 or 5 tries before the icons will finally appear. Is Anyone Sticking Around To See How Things Go?
Feb 17, 2010

I recently lost my MT job with a pretty decent company.  It was due to lack of work.  I know this is happening a lot these days, and I've been reading a lot of the posts here.  I know that no field is perfect, but I have to do something.  How many of you plan on (or can) stick around to see how things go, and how many of you are going back to school or getting into a different field? ...

Things That Make Me Go Hmm
May 19, 2010

Have ya ever wondered, WHY is it that we get "audited" when we are having really, really bad work days? Why does the "computer randomly chose" (ha!) the most difficult, awful report to review?   My latest audit was on a dictator I had NEVER EVER DONE before, on a brand spanking new account, was 1098 minutes and ASR and ESL!  I got an 84%.  (Hey! as far as I'm concerned that should have been an A+++!!  Least I gave them something that looked like a report.) I a ...

Offshoring, Things We Can Do.
Sep 14, 2011

First off, I am truly disgusted with our government for allowing offshoring to such a degree that it has taken most of our jobs away.  We have written and complained to no avail.  We do need to do some things on our own too.  I recently went shopping for my son's school supplies.  I read the labels to make sure things were made in America.  Ink pens:  The only ink pens I found made in America were Pilot pens, BIC were made in China.  I bought the Pilot pe ...
