I just retired - Yeah! Anyway, I had to use IE 8 while working at Nuance and it made my computer so, so slow. On some sites, it froze. The first thing I did on retirement was upgrade to IE 11, and you cannot believe the difference. My internet now is super fast.
Also, I may not have retired completely if I could just have had more time off without pay. For example, this week I have been sick and I had no PTO remaining. I would have to have made up the time. I have worked when I was sick and that is very difficult in terms of accuracy and speed when you are not feeling well. The few days I got every year were just not enough to cover appointments, things I just had to do, and doing any kind of family thing. These days had to cover sick days, holidays, and emergencies. People do have lives outside of work. We are human though these companies probably do not think we are.
They always seem to need people. There might be a whole untapped amount of older people with lots of experience who would like to work part-time or work per diem and not be tied into a rigid schedule. At the hospital where I used to work there were several older people who worked per diem. It should be a win, win situation for everyone, i.e., no benefits to pay, having people work when they really need coverage and not work when there is no work without having to make up. Of course, that makes sense so it will never happen.
