Changing industry - good or bad - at whose cost

Hi Everyone,

It is great pleasure to meet you all. At the outset, my deepest solace to all in the forum, despite prevailing uncertainties in the industry, we all hang together hoping change to come. No industry has seen so many transitions than MT industry and technology once laid to help human, has come to point of overthrowing humans in all verticals. Today, we are most laid back when compared to others ITES or BPO industry.

Good what we lost and what we gained. Here we lost sleep, we work preferably only in night shift, you are forbidden from celebrating your family occasions or religious celebrations, absolutely uncertain whether your job is intact for tomorrow, health ailments, no matter your diabetic or death in your family, you are supposed to deliver 99% quality with consistency.

That is great, that is how my industry works. No matter what, I have my job intact today and that I am going to lay-down my last breath for every single lines, which fetches me 90 paise, and I build my castle of hopes only on this uncertainty because I have a family to take care and my most adorable dog, not matter he loves me or not and on top of all, my company is so dear and near to me because for sure they know my fate, kind enough they provide me medical insurance and only privilege working for an MNC.

Penny and penny makes many, but penny and penny deductions makes me nutty. If you take a look around all these MNC, what they have in common. Very simple, they are not going to make your life better, instead they are going to make is more miserable than ever. Very simple, today everywhere it is common two things, cost per line and penalty per line. The best math that no one can imaging off, while my salary is paid per line, my deductions are in percentages of gross salary. Wow Kudos to the rule makers....okay I am little tough guy, now I contest for my errors marked by the QAs or QCs, I get the most weird and beaten to death answer, "IT IS CRITICAL ERROR."

Jeez can someone say what is yardstick or is there any standard protocol to measure the quality in MT industry, even if so what is the consistency of it being followed. It is simple, boss "you are at receiving end." No matter what I mark as error, because I am your boss and I am deciding authority (MNC QAs or QCs). This how it works.

All MNCs have 48 hours files, but still you are forced to work in night shift, because that how they sell their company to US market, but whose cost. This debate is not going to end, we can just talk and continue with the misery.

For all those I think it is high time, we standup together and say "Enough is Enough." We all once loved this profession, but I think it is time to say good bye before it takes our lives and family away from us.

Thank for our time folks

They're as miserable as we are! - nm

Good! I'm glad they're having a big dose of karma.

Wow! Really? - shame on you!

Hey, the workers in India aren't the ones at fault here. They're only trying to make a living just like we are. It's the fault of the MTSOs who shipped the work over there.

One thing I'm wondering about, though. Was that how the original post was actually written, or was it translated into English? Because if it was actually written that way, then maybe the MTSOs should get to see it. With so many problems with syntax & sentence structure, how can they expect them to deliver a decent product?

Actually, wouldn't it be nice to show it to the CLIENTS of the MTSOs and ask them, "Is this the person you want transcribing your important medical documents? If you'd rather have it done by an American-born MT, then demand it of your MTSO. Pay the extra few pennies and get it done right. You really do get what you pay for."

I worked for a company who decided to start offshoring some of the work. When the hospital saw the terrible quality of those jobs, they were more than happy to pay the extra money to have the work brought back here.

I didn't know from firsthand experience that many Indian MTs and other offshored workers openly laugh about Americans being out of work because of them. You can say "shame on you!" all you want. It's your opinion, however I couldn't care less if workers in other countries who get our jobs aren't happy. You're right, however, to be skeptical about QA of offshored reports. I have done QA for reports typed offshore. Believe me, it's awful most of the time. It would've taken less time for me to type the report myself than correct all the errors.

Since they are as unhappy as we are, then wouldn't it make sense to try and find a way to band together, maybe try an international sick day where none of the work gets done. We are not going to get change unless we take the risk.

I work for a pretty decent company with decent benefits but I am tired of being required to research but yet not get paid for it, I am tired of not getting paid for OT properly. I am tired of being required to send countless emails every day and not get paid for that time it takes me to construct this email. And the list could go on and on.

If all you want to do is complain about how bad you have it but don't want to take a chance then you deserve what you get. We all need our jobs or we wouldn't be working, but at what price. We always said it wouldn't do any good because they would just get the Indian's to do the work, well if we get the Indian's involved, and it sounds like they want to do something, we might make a difference. Aren't we worth more than we are getting?

Someone should contact these people on their boards and try to organize something or else stop complaining. If you are waiting for the MTSOs to do it for us out of the kindness of their heart you are going to dye waiting. They only care about their bottom line, and you should only care about your bottom line.
Seriously, shame on you! - CuriousMT

I'm with the other person that said shame on you. You are generalizing and playing up stereotypes.

Yes, it sucks that our jobs were sent overseas, and yes, the work is done better here. But English is NOT the national language of the United States! We don't have one. We are a melting pot of people. Some of these ESL doctors were born right here. And some American's that grew up speaking English are just as hard to understand as Indian's born in India! And many countries like India and the Philippines learn English alongside their native language. I speak from experience being married to a Filipino. In school, the teachers only spoke English. It was only at home that he learned his native language. And even then, it was 2 languages (their national language and then the regional dialect).

My point is, you're mad and you're trying to point fingers.

The MTSO's and many other countries outsource because it's cheaper. Plain and simple. But the old addage of you get what you pay for very much applies. There are amazing MT's in India and there are crappy MT's in America. The issue is that the entire field of medical transcription is going into the toilet!

Let's not point fingers but realize that we are ALL just trying to make a wage. And while you may have heard that they laugh that we're losing jobs and such, those that laugh are probably laughing for joy because finally they can have a toilet or running water in their home. Because they can afford to send their child to college... We all work from home on computers that many of us bought on internet connections that are super fast. Many people in India and the Philippines don't have running water to their house, and if it is, it's not potable. They don't have a home computer because they didn't even have a home phone line, let alone DSL or cable internet.

Seriously. Shame on you!
India's poverty situation is NOT our doing - Crybaby job stealers
[ In Reply To ..]
Defend those who take our jobs all you want. Say "shame on me" all you want. Did I ever say English was the national language? NO!! I was not talking negatively about the Philippines but the hole known as India. I know what I'm talking about stating that Indian workers make fun of US workers and customers. I'll be blunt: I couldn't care less if you or anyone else hates on me for my post or opinions.

Yes the entire field is going down the toilet. It was a LOT better when US work was being done in the US, though.
You are mad at the wrong people. - Period. nm.

[ In Reply To ..]
English NOT the national/official language of the U.S. HUH?? That's a new one on me! The only part of your post that makes any sense is that it sucks big time that our jobs are sent overseas bec. it's cheaper for the MTSOs.But for you to generalize that both native-born Americans, immigrants, as well as Philippines/Indians overseas are EQUALLY skilled in the English language and equally adept at medical transcription/editing... well, I'll just leave that one up in the air.
You probably think we have a democracy here too! - CuriousMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Google it... English is NOT the official language of the United States. After all, Christopher Columbus was Italian, sailing here for Spain... and the majority of people coming to this country for the first couple hundred years were not English! So, we never set an official language. It's been brought up a couple times, but never passed!

So, do I generalize that some immigrants and Filipinos and Indians speak as good of English as some native-board Americans, sure! Do all of them? No way! And speaking, they have accents just like we do!

My point is that we're all in the same boat of getting into this field because we saw an opportunity, whether it was a lateral move from a secretary in a doctors office or a billing clerk who started transcribing to make some extra money (as is the case with my Aunt), or whether it's someone myself who went to school to do this because I found myself disabled and didn't want to live my life on disability! Sure, I think our records are better kept in the country so as to not have the laws skirted (not saying that they don't abide by HIPAA, but there's more risk there). And sure, I get just as mad as anyone else calling a tech support line where someone with such a thick accent and a generic name like "Peggy" answers the phone and just reads the same script over and over, but that has less to do with the person than with the employer, the company the hired them and gave them the training and the script to read rather than the actual individual or to generalize it being a whole country/continent!

(And yes, thank you for pointing out I typed "same" instead of "shame." )

[ In Reply To ..]
I confess upon finding a huge 3 point error (richly deserved, but still - how many of us have had jobs where making a mistake didn't mean getting our pay docked?) on FIESA I harbored serious bad feelings about the QA person who did it to me. I am so glad I am not doing that job, depriving people of bonuses would just make it a no go for me. But, it really was not her fault that they made the ridiculous policy whereby FIESA is used as a tool to knock as many MTs out of contention for any bonus as possible. Someone upstairs must be pushing for more of us to be taken off the bonus list. God forbid they forgo a million or two, they need to take that last dollar off us so we get paid as close to minimum wage as possible.

There is no way we can tell how many of us make the bonus either. Isn't that convenient for them. Want to bet next quarter is a record low number of bonuses, both production and QA? That's just a nice Christmas present for us.

News flash! WE ARE the little people sm - MTmom

Sooo... Some Philippines or Indians don't have running water or indoor toilets. I don't hear about these same people who now have our jobs crying about AMERICANS losing their homes because of the outsourcing so that THEY can work. At least, most these crybabies having to use outhouses HAVE homes.

This used to be a great profession for skilled U.S. MTs before the advent of outsourcing, first to India in the 90s & then to other countries who only THINK they know MT or even proper English.

As a 30-year veteran MT who has suffered right along with my fellow U.S. MTs, I could give a diddly squat if the off-shores do have to walk to their out-house or boil their own H2O.

Pay For MTs In India

Was just curious really about how much MTs in India make.  No wonder so much work is going over there.  They can make around 5000 rupees a month, which is about $125 in U.S. dollar a month, plus line count bonuses.  It makes me so angry that MQ is playing a part of the downfall of our economy by offshoring, instead of trying to help our country out by keeping work here.  Wonder how much the unemployment rate would drop if every MTSO in this country stopped offshorin ...

If the economy ever gets better, most of us will leave for jobs that pay better. Once they don't have enough of us, they'll simply send the work to India rather than pay us more.
