India should not be blamed - santhosh

Posted: Jun 13, 2010

As compared to the total medical transcription work of US, the portion of MT work outsourced for India is very less it seems.  Some are blaming offshoring of MT work to India as a cause of cheaper pay rates for US MTs.  But the fact is different.  Now a days MT companies in US are switching to voice recognition method of their MT work which requires only editors and proofers and not MTs.  Hence MTs are eliminated from the scenario.  The voice recognition software is doing work for much cheaper rate, that is why companies are switching to voice recognition method.  As a result, the pay rate for MTs is decreased.

In India also medical transcription companies that are having headquarters at the United States have stopped home medical transcription work for MTs.  The work is only given for proofers and editors with 3 to 5 years of experience in the field as home transcription from one or 2 years.  Hence lot of home MTs lost thier work and they invested a  lot to set up necessities for home transcription like computer, backup UPS, batteries, internet charges, modem etc.  So, I think the main cause for this development is the voice recognition software.  So blame the voice recognition software, not Indians.  Actually in this globalized world if one have to survive competing is necessary.  Spheris like companies became bankrupt due to inability to compete.  So, I think this type of development is enevitable in a globalized world.  No senators or others can offer help in this situation because if US fails to compete with the other part of the world, the loser will be the US itself.  Otherwise US should isolate itself from globalization and remain solely and lose the economic benefits of globalization by protectionism.  Actually USA has very little population as compared to India.  India is nourishing 110 crore people with a geographical area of 32,87,782 sq. km. while USA is nourishing only 25 crore people with a total geographical area of 93,63,123 sq. km.  I do not know why having such a vast geographical area people of United States are blaming Indians for their sufferings.

telling. Try as you may, and as educated as you may be, it is very difficult to hide the fact that English is obviously not your native language.

Personally, I don't blame MTs in India for taking the work if they can get it. I blame greedy company owners for trying to line their own pockets at the expense of the American public.

I would like to see the end of all offshoring of ANY type of work. We need to keep our own citizens employed. I also don't want my personal healthcare and financial records in the hands of unregulated entities.

Santhosh was not trying to hide that he/she is Indian, - sm

since he/she posted under "Santhosh," obviously not American.

I bet you would be more than happy and proud were your Indian language as good as Santhosh's English.

GLOBAL ECONOMY - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I maintain that those of us in the USA might do ourselves a favor if we seriously investigate the option of becoming seriously involved in international commerce...not just MT work. There are other industries that allow us to work from home while profiting from the global economy rather than suffering because of it. Maybe many of our problems stem from the fact that we just want things to stay the same, which they never will.

You might learn how to spell in the US, we do not use the Queen's English, it is L-A-B-O-R, not LABOUR!

You make good points in your post, but... - xyzzz

[ In Reply To ..]
Editing and proofing poor quality ASR takes just as much knowledge as transcribing or QA'ing, and is more time consuming reading every letter, so why should the pay be that much less? From 10 cpl down to 3 cpl? That's not realistic and IMHO is influenced by the Indian lower pay scale. And as your post demonstrates, as articulate as it is, any American could pick it out as being from someone not familiar with American English usage. Nobody here says "hence," for example.

Indians are taught British English in schools, - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
HENCE they use hence......

Shanthosh is INDIAN, not American, it is obvious, don't you know this?

He/she did not try to pass as an American MT.

That's not the point, regarding transcription - of US med reports

[ In Reply To ..]
especially ASR reports, a knowledge of "American" English is invaluable, not to mention medical terminology, and lack of it shows up for MMEs reviewing ILP transcribed reports for lower cpl and more time reqired for their full QA reports.
Not just "American" English, but idiomatic American English-- - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
--which is one of the hardest things for a non-native speaker to learn, and varies from locale to locale.
it can be achieved through the "immersion" method of learning a language - living among natives for a long time
[ In Reply To ..]
nm
the "medical terminology" can be learned - idiomatic ?
[ In Reply To ..]
by ILP, it is not subjected to the "locale."

Regarding the "idiomatic" language issue, does it harm the report in any way if the dictator uses "hence" instead of "therefore." etc....?

Must every medical report be dictated and transcribed in "idiomatic American English?"

I do not think so.

I am against offshoring, but the reason given by this and the next posters are not relevant, others are.

Please know, Santosh, that not all Americans blame India-- - SM

[ In Reply To ..]
--either the country or its people/workers. It's just that, with the frustration of the change to a global economy and the subsequent restructuring (and sometimes loss) of jobs domestically people naturally search for a source to blame and it's simply easy for us to say "India."

Then, too, many Americans have a distorted view of reality when it comes to international commerce and America's place in it. Generations here have grown up thinking "we're number one," and "we have the best system in the world," and now we're losing on some fronts and folks just don't know how to cope with that. Eventually, we'll find our way.

But, again, just as we should not just blame "India" in some blanket indictment over the situation in which we find ourselves, don't assume all Americans feel that way. I don't.

American workers should just make themselves as poor as workers in India and other poorer countries? And that will be a good thing? Give me a break! America was founded as a country where an ordinary person could rise above being nothing but a wage-slave! And if competing with the salaries paid to workers in poorer countries is such a good thing, how come we don't see American CEOs being told to compete with the low wages of CEOs in poorer countries? Why is it ALWAYS American workers who are expected to make concessions and be satisfied with a few crumbs? What is happening in globalization IS NOT FAIR competition - it is competition to see who can have the poorest workers! And that IS NOT GOOD FOR ANYBODY!

Of this entire thread, starting with santhosh's post, this was the one that makes the most sens - Kiki

Sick Of Being Blamed For Dictator Blunders! (sm)
Dec 13, 2013

Shame on us for sending something to QA because the dictator didn't enunciate. Shame on us for leaving a blank for the words cut off while using their pause command. Shame on us for allowing the doctor to input the wrong MRM. Shame on us for questioning dosage of Hydrocodone, 1,000 mg. How dare we alert them that the patient is allergic to a prescribed med. How dare we alert them to an incomplete dictation How stupid of us to not know exactly what medication was covered by a cough. I ...

Anyone Blamed/fired For Not Making Min. Wage?
Jul 30, 2014

The account I work has a ton of untrained young dictators who never learned what a pause button was, and half barely speak English, requiring restructuring of most sentences.  They think it is fine to blabber through the ROS and PE since it always comes back perfect (after a ton of research to decipher it) and don't think it is necessary to say more at the end than "CC Matahadavadah.  They don't say "Doctor" first so you don't know if it is a last name, first & ...

ESL And India
Dec 02, 2009

Not trying to be ignorant of things, but I read A LOT of reference to ESL dictators and work going to India.  What are ESL dictators exactly?  I am asking because I've worked for this company only for a short time, but I don't have any dictators that are ESL (I am assuming English second language speakers correct)? other than what is normal for my region AND I also have not lost any work to India.  I am concerned though as it seems to be a trend.  I rarely run ...

Pay For MTs In India
Sep 22, 2011

Was just curious really about how much MTs in India make.  No wonder so much work is going over there.  They can make around 5000 rupees a month, which is about $125 in U.S. dollar a month, plus line count bonuses.  It makes me so angry that MQ is playing a part of the downfall of our economy by offshoring, instead of trying to help our country out by keeping work here.  Wonder how much the unemployment rate would drop if every MTSO in this country stopped offshorin ...

9 P.m. And It All Goes To India
Feb 19, 2013

My employer won't admit it but all of this month the work on my account will go from 50-75 reports well within TAT to suddenly nothing and this happens between 9-9:15 p.m.  Typically that volume of report would last me and the others on the account until 11 p.m. or midnight.  Ironically I note that 9 p.m. in the US is equal to 9 a.m. in India.  Why don't they just admit they're giving work to India and stealing it from us, leaving those of us scheduled to work until ...

MME From India

For the last two nights I have been editing almost all reports from MTs in India.  The reports go through 2 MMEs in India and then come to me.  It is amazing since they are supposed to be so "good" at what they do, that just about all of the reports come through with errors in them that were not picked up by MMEs in India. Just a thought.  ...

MTE From India
Jun 18, 2013

I wonder how much editing the MTEs from India are actually doing.  In the report was typed Cranberry Whistle as a medication when it was actually cranberry, Vistaril 25 p.o. q.4-6 h. p.r.n. in a medication list.  Since the MTs from India are supposed to be much smarter than US MTs and this report went through 2 levels of editing in India, wonder how much they actually look at the report or do Google searches.  Never heard of Cranberry Whistle as a medicatin.  Brother.  G ...

And What's To Say It CANNOT All Be Sent To India?
Mar 14, 2015

If the economy ever gets better, most of us will leave for jobs that pay better. Once they don't have enough of us, they'll simply send the work to India rather than pay us more. They will continue to insist on paying low wages. I think they saw an opening when the economy tanked with too many people, including us, looking for a job -- ANY job and took advantage of the economy by transforming this job into a minimum-wage job. Then they could tell the hospitals how cheap they could ...

India And The Phillipines.
Dec 02, 2009

I forgot to ask this question in my last post: Assuming that most of us are getting 8-10 cpl, what are the Indian and Phillipino MTs getting?  Half?  Less than half?  Also, assuming that the need for MTs will continue somewhat - how long do you all think it will be before all the remaining MTSOs will outsource to India and the Phillipines - for nothing else, but to reduce their MT overhead?? Now I'm really depressed, and I have to start work. Thanks everyone.   ...

Offshoring To India
May 27, 2010

What is the attraction about India, that so much of the transcription is being sent there? It seems to me that someone for whom English is a second language would not do very well in transcribing reports from the U.S. I would expect that a lot of those reports would have be heavily eited or completely re-done. So why offshore it in the first place? Am I missing some information here? It can't be all about salary, because from the postings here, it doesn't seem like transcriptionists i ...

Outsourcing To India
Jun 15, 2010

On numerous occasions over the past year I was told by my CCM that the reason they are outsourcing to India is because there is a shortage of qualified MTs because the average age of an MT is 55 and they are starting to retired.  Like the infamous ***** and is ridiculous claim about 650 lph on ASR, that MTs have an IQ of about 6.    ***** Do not name/identify individuals.  Moderator ***** ...

MQ Sending More To India
Nov 20, 2010

My husband is in the stock market and has been checking up and reading things about MedQuist.   MedQuist is now in a transition of sending more to India than ever before.  According to the CEO and COO, they are looking to increase their volume of 15% of MQ total work to 45% in the next 6 months.  The purchase of Spheris was a smokescreen.  The contract with Spheris was that they could come in and set up shop with their own people and move the MQ folks out.  Which is ...

If All The MT Work Is In India, Then How Do I
Sep 09, 2011

I have been waiting for hours, no work today, nothing.  This is per usual anymore.  My last several accounts went overseas, it would not have hurt the MTSO I work for to have kept me on any of the accounts anyway and they won't give me a secondary so that when the work does come in they can keep a tight TAT.   I've been looking for other opportunities, but just can't seem to find anything.  I don't have a car so have no transportation to even try find ...

NTS India Website
Jul 16, 2012

I checked out the NTS India website and was very interested about the pay they quote for an independent contractor. The values are in paise, which convert to 100 in a rupee. For speech 30,000 to infinity lines one would be paid 100 paise or 1 rupee, which would be 0.02 cents per line. These are the rates for >=99%, which I am as ...
