I just thought this was kind of absurd...

"The future of Medical Transcription, as of today, is in use of Speech Recognition Technology. With the advent of this technology, manual typing has been eliminated. The Recognition percentage in most of the leading speech recognition software products is around 80% to 85%."

FAQs on Medical Transcription

Thinking of Medical Transcription as a Career Option???
Read the FAQs below to learn more about Medical Transcription and its future, earning capabilities, growth opportunities, etc.

Frequently asked questions:
What is medical transcription?
Medical transcription is the process where a Medical Transcriptionist accurately and swiftly transcribes medical records dictated by physicians.
Do I require any special skills to take up Medical Transcription as a profession?
You don’t require any special skills to start off in this profession. However, you need to undergo Medical Transcription training to learn the basic Anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, medical terminology, pharmacology (drug names along with doses and dosages), etc. During MT training, certain skills such as the comprehension of American Accent coupled with good listening skills, computer skills, etc, are also improved.
What does a medical transcriptionist do?
Medical Transcriptionists (MTs) are specialists in medical language and healthcare documentation. Physicians and other providers dictate care using transcription software such as eScription. eScription will create a draft document using intelligent speech recognition. The MT reviews the draft document while he/she listens to the spoken word by the physician. The MT makes any appropriate correction. Once the document is completely reviewed and edited, the document is send back to the hospital for further handling.
What working options does a Medical Transcriptionist have?
Medical Transcriptionists (MTs) are employed by primarily by private medical transcription companies. There are plenty of opportunities for a trained and experienced MT. You can choose to work full-time, part-time, or in a flexible work schedule in different medical transcription companies.
There are many MTs who work from home as well either as an Independent Transcription Professional (ITP) for companies nearby or distant or home-based employees, where you get paid similar anything other employee working from an office with salary, PF, ESI, etc, benefits.

What is the earning potential in Medical Transcription?
The potential to earn in Medical Transcription is limitless. The Base Salary usually starts from Rs. 8,000 per month. However, most of the MT Companies provide a base salary and incentives. While the Base Salary is fixed, the incentives vary according to your output. It is estimated, on an average, an MT with 2 years of experience earns a salary in the range of Rs. 15,000/- to Rs. 25,000/- (including incentives) on an average.
What are the growth options in Medical Transcription?
A good MT with sufficient experience can grow to various levels, i.e., Proofer, Super Proofer, Editor, QA, Team Managers, etc. Roles and responsibilities of a MT designation vary from company to company.
When can I start working from home after my MT training?
You need to work from an office setup for at least 1 year after your MT Training before you can take up work from home.
What is the future of Medical Transcription?
Medical Transcription has come a long way from manually hand-writing the reports by the doctor’s assistant to typing on a typewriter, to using word processors in 1970s to the present day use of computers. Current legislation and payor policies drive further improvements in documentation in the healthcare industry. Along with advancement of technology, Medical Transcription has also advanced in leaps and bounds. Of late, Speech Recognition Technology is being used to convert dictated text into draft documents which after editing by MTs turn into medical reports. The future of Medical Transcription, as of today, is in use of Speech Recognition Technology. With the advent of this technology, manual typing has been eliminated. The Recognition percentage in most of the leading speech recognition software products is around 80% to 85%. This eliminates the need to manually type the medical reports and one can start off his/her career in Medical Transcription as a Proofer or Senior Proofer or Editor, etc., which again varies from company to company.

And remember, a qualified and experienced Medical Transcriptionist is always in great demand.

I Hate To Beat A Dead Horse, But...........
Jun 10, 2014

Down below when I was trying to figure out if the reason I got laid off was because I was PT (CCM told me all PT were being laid off) or that I was in California (I thought maybe this was the case).....I realize that neither of these are true. I know there are still plenty of PT'ers left AND MTs in CA. So the only thing left (since like I said I always passed their stupid audits and always worked my graveyard/Saturday/sunday/all holidays shifts is that they were just trying to get rid of ...

Beating A Dead Horse But...
Sep 20, 2010

The problem with making money with ASR is, I swear my fingers are moving just as much, but all over the board, not how we all learned to go fast, fingers on the home keys and move from there.  My hands are trying to fly all over....arrow keys, end, ctrl/shift/arrow to highlight, over to delete, try to find my way back, only to move off home keys to arrow some more.  If I could connect a pedometer on my fingers, I know it would show they are moving just as much without the same producti ...

NTS India Website
Jul 16, 2012

I checked out the NTS India website and was very interested about the pay they quote for an independent contractor. The values are in paise, which convert to 100 in a rupee. A rupee is 0.02 US dollars. For transcribing 30,000 to infinity lines on the day shift one would be paid 200 paise or 2 rupees, which would be 0.04 cents per line US. For speech 30,000 to infinity lines one would be paid 100 paise or 1 rupee, which would be 0.02 cents per line. These are the rates for >=99%, which I am as ...

Jul 11, 2012

Oh please look at this link for Nuance India: http://www.ntsindia.in/ and while you're in there, check out the tab at the top that says "MT Training" and while in that tab, look at the subheading concerning earning potential for Indian transcriptionists. The base salary as quoted from that information is 8000 rupees a moth, which equals 160 dollars in US funds.  This is why we have no work and can't make production because we cannot compete with a company that hires out of coun ...

Hawaii Trip For Nuance India

Want Work From Nuance With Bonuses? Move To India.
Nov 11, 2012

Check out the bonuses for employees in India. My thought is the big N is making a move to transport as many MT jobs to India as possible (low work volumes) and employees in US are getting what is left behind. Home-based employees in India send reports to QA or Editor. If it goes to Editor, Bingo, maybe that's your job, correcting what someone in a foreign market cannot possibly understand. Makes perfect sense for Nuance. Maybe Obama will stick it to them with taxes for exporting our jobs so ...

Coding - From The Horse's Mouth To This Board
Nov 10, 2011

I just spoke with a young woman named Bailey at the AAPC.  AAPC only does outpatient coding certification, not inpatient.  Inpatient is obtained through AHIMA.  CPC requires 2 years of experience.  CPC exam can be taken without the 2 years of experience but will have an apprentice designation on your credential, CPC-A.  The apprentice would be dropped after 2 years of experience.   AHIMA's requirements are much different:  Certified Coding Associate (CCA ...

MT'ers transcription may not be dead after all.  I had an interview with a local hospital that has many clinics and outside services.  They have had all of their transcription outsourced aside from various departments in the actual hospital.  However, they have discovered a better quality of work if they keep their work onsite.  They are pulling ALL of their services back to using on-site transcriptionists.  Some at home work after training, but there will be no MTS ...
