Employment Contract with Nuance - MT

I was offered a position at Nuance and was surprised to get the employment agreement that states I will be an "at-will" employee and that I must apply again in one year as the employment agreement is only for one year. I was shocked. I have never heard of this. I am middle-aged and have never heard of "at-will" employment. I have also never had to reapply with a company after 1 year. Are all Nuance employees given this type of employment agreement?

at-will employment simply means you can quit whenever you want and you can be let go whenever they want.

You can Google it, but as the other poster said, "at will" basically means that you can quit whenever you want or that they can let you go whenever they want. And I think almost all jobs in all the 50 states are "at will" employment these days.

The part that I would question is why would the employment agreement only last for 1 year and why would you have to re-apply for your job again after that 1 year? I've never heard of a company doing something like this for an employee, maybe for an IC, but not for an employee. I can only guess, but I think that would mean that your insurance would only be effective for just that 1 year.

They are evil. They have a script they go by now. Their new time keeping time clock and other methods of keeping track of work are a nighmare. They throw all this information at you and you have to figure it all out yourself. If you ask them a question when you're overwhelmed they email you back saying "As was relayed to you previously, bla bla bla" Cold cold cold.

My offer letter from Nuance stated at-will also but nothing about 1 year.

I did NOT stay away from Nuance "me" in fact I am very happily employed. I am one of your hated quality control people!

Truthfully....if I were you, I wouldn't be too concerned about - the 1 year reapply either.

Their rules and regulations have become SO conglomerated and messed up, I seriously doubt they will even *ask* you to do that, let alone remember it. But, as the OP said, it's a crap shoot whether or not you take the job. They all are good and they all are bad at different times. But, one thing never changes....the company is there for the company, certainly not YOU, no matter the fact that it's US that makes the money for them. Again, for THEM, not us. Good luck on whatever you decide.

To say I don't like QC would be an understatement. You know what ya'll got in common? All have ESP (you KNOW what the dictator meant, even if he does state it), PMS every day. and I wonder if that little title QC makes you think you are superior. Just remember, if all the MTs were as perfect as you, you wouldn't have a job.

Agree with other post about stay away from Nuance. Worked for one of the companies they merged with, and they have horrible TSMs and supervisors and program. Trans 27 yrs, MM quit within last 3 mo, another bad co, job now with best trans. company, very happy with.

I agree with you. I've never heard of such a thing as requiring re-application each and every year. I don't know if they hire per diem people or not but perhaps they mistakenly sent you that version of their contract instead of employee version. Call HR to clarify. Good luck. Hope you get it straightened out.

I decided to send them the contract e-mail back stating I would not be accepting and why - that with 20 years experience, I will quit the industry before going that low and that there are still other jobs out there willing to pay more (even if it is only for 6 months to a year that they told me it would last). What do you think of this? Is this a normal inclusion on a contract? Personally, I think this is a load of B.S. (P.S., they only pay 5.75 cents/per line to begin with, for straight transcription.) I got a contract with this company and have never seen anything like it. Their performance rating/expectations outline is the most condenscending, tryannical thing I have ever read.
