Online Schools - jsantora828

I am interested in becoming a medical transcriptionist. I was wondering what online school you would recommend. Two that I saw that was interesting was FutureMT and CareerStep. I want to make sure I pick a good school so i can get a good foundation.
Also how long did it take for you to finish school? I heard between 3-6 months.

Thanks

I went through a home-based course from PCDI, Professional Career Development Institute, out of Atlanta, Georgia about 11 years ago. It included terminology and anatomy of all body systems, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, etc., and then numerous transcriptions. I believe they allowed up to 2 years to complete the course; I finished it in about 14 months. I do know that this course was not as intense and in-depth as a medical transcription course that one might take at an actual college. No matter which course you choose, I don't think you can complete it in 3-6 months.

Look on newMTs forum and see the discussions there regarding on-line classes and the pros and cons of being an MT

The most important thing is to be sure that your program uses the SUM program. In my opinion, the best schools are (1) Andrews. (2) M-TEC. Good luck.

agree with Old Pro - Andrews or M-TEC

Andrews takes 1 year to complete, though it can take longer. Not sure about M-TEC.

I would run away from any school that promised to make you an MT in less than 1 year.

As a CareerStep grad I can highly recommend this school. Their price is competitive and the course is very comprehensive. It can be completed in 4 months, but most people do it in 6-8 months. However, once you start the course, they give you 1 year to complete it before having to buy extensions, which cost $35 for 3-month increments (or at least they used to).

CS is one of several well-respected online schools, and they do offer placement services after graduation if you purchase that option with your course. They also have close affiliations with many national MTSOs who frequently hire CS grads.

Good luck in your future studies and career!

first look up the school threw the BBB. I went through Allied schools and wished that I went to a community college.

lol @ 3-6months.

Online Schools For Transcription
Aug 04, 2012

I have been an MT for 4 years now and actually completed all my training at a local technical college.  Now, I find myself in a position to mentor some young Military Spouses regarding medical transcription and what online schools would be the better choice for completing a MT certification. I am not that familiar with the online options, so I was hoping to hear the good, the bad, and yes even the ugly about what is out there.  Our spouses have funding of around $4000 and ...

Expert Opinions On Online Schools Please
Jan 07, 2015

I need some expert opinions please on online schools for both coding and billing courses for my daughter. She is looking into Andrews, Keiser, Rasmussen and Ashworth. We do understand these are separate courses, billing and coding. She is leaning toward Keiser University because they offer financial aid and assistance, however it is expensive. We have read the excellent reviews about Andrews but worry about no financial aid such as grants or student loans. Any help or opinions would be greatly a ...

Coding Schools - Where Did YOU Go?
Jun 01, 2010

Okay, here we go again.....if anyone has attended a coding school in the last year, is attending a coding school, could you please post your thoughts (was it worth the money, quality, etc)?  I know several people are still on the fence as to whether to pay the large sum to go to a private school (Andrews, DeVry) or attend community colleges in preparation to take their credentials in coding.  I've been reading posts saying the education from all is basically the same, of course it ...

Licensed Schools
Aug 10, 2012

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. It turned out that the school kept moving not only from state to state, but from country to country and the state they had been living in did requir ...

Penn Foster Schools
Jan 04, 2010

I am currently finishing my schooling from Penn Foster and I guess I didn't do enough research before I signed up for Penn Foster and now I'm regretting it. Ever since I've been hearing all the negative comments about Penn Foster I don't even want to finish the course even though I am on the last lesson. Connection Between Companies/MT Schools?
Feb 07, 2010

Have to admit I'm pretty shocked by several of the posts on this forum, especially concerning how the companies are operating.  New to the MT world here, and guess I'm green.  Hadn't heard much at the school I attended except this forum was "too negative."  I now see there's a legit reason for negative posts about companies if these posters are being honest, and I have no reason to believe they're not. Just wondering how tight a connection the MT schools ...

Before You Commit To Coding Schools
May 16, 2011

Hi all, I just wanted to say, before you commit to a coding course, make sure you have enough time to study! I started Andrews School last year, and right after I started I found out I was pregnant.  I work a full time job and now have a new baby.  After I completed the first module and started the second module, I was so stressed out I needed a break, now I am having trouble getting back into the swing of things and finding the time to study.  My entire tuition is paid for and I ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

Choices Of Schools For Coding
Jan 10, 2012

I am trying to sort through the different options out there for education in coding - is there an online school that most of you would recommend?  I am officially out of  MT'ing after 20 years, threw up my hands, literally, gave up trying to make a living at it.  I would probably use up half of my savings for schooling, but after many months of trying on different "hats", so to speak, in the work force, my heart is pulling me back to the medical field.  Opinions??? ...

MT Schools Promising Big Bucks
Feb 25, 2012

First, don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to be negative about this in any way and wish any new MT success. However, with this profession dying like it is and even very experienced MTs just trying to eke out even $10 an hour . . . It really aggravates me all of these MT schools and courses trying to suck innocent people in with their high tuition costs, etc. The fact is that nowadays it is akin to going and paying x amount of money to go work for $10 or less an hour. These schools/c ...

I have been researching schools & certifications for coding and getting a bit overwhelmed! I have pretty much decided on an online course but now to decide which one?
