What are the top 3 MT schools? nm - MT3

schools - check this

check out new mts board as it is discussed there quite often

The top one is Andrews, followed in second place by M-TEC with Career Step running a very distant third. Choose Andrews or M-TEC.

Why not let this person decide for herself instead of telling her what to do?

I am not telling her what to do. I am trying to help her avoid making a costly mistake. You sound like my six-year-old grandson who says "You're not my boss and you can't make me." Not trying to tell/make anybody do anything--except save them from the experience of not being able to find a job.

What do you base your ranking on? I was hired by one of the top national companies who "required" 5 years experience within 7 days of starting to apply for jobs...fresh out of graduating from Career Step.

I agree!! Another Career Step Graduate here. I didn't have any trouble finding work after graduation and feel I am just as qualified as someone who graduated from a more expensive school. I guess if you need to be hand held then having an instructor to guide you would be better for you, but if you are an independent worker, which is something you will need to be when you are working, then Career Step is a great choice.
No instructors? Sorry but AHDI approval REQUIRES instructors - for good reason
[ In Reply To ..]
Any school approved by AHDI has to have instructors. The idea that having an instructor means you have to have your hand held is a little silly.
Top 3 Schools - no hand holding
[ In Reply To ..]
I went to Andrews and had no trouble finding a job. The instructors are there for you, but no one certainly held my hand through the course! They stress independence and researching if you don't know something. They also offer a payment plan that stretches out a long time after graduation. A great school and worth the money in my opinion
Career Step, Instructors? - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
When did Career Step get instructors? I mean real instructors, not someone to help you see you what is up next in the course. Last I heard, there was nobody to help with style issues, or give serious feedback and answer serious questions, abbreviation help, etc.

I'm glad someone is happy with their course. I haven't been. I think they set you up for failure, so you keep paying them. I will say on the positive side: my 2nd attemp at the transcription portion was better sound files. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm ready to move on!!
Instructors are not "hand holders" - fastfingers
[ In Reply To ..]
Would you take a biology class without an instructor? What about English (and I specifically mean one that includes grammar)? Instructors are there to TEACH. I take offense at the "hand holding" remark. I went to Andrews, and there was definitely NO hand holding going on there.....I got a great education from those experienced professionals.
No hand-nolding at Andrews. - Schipperke
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm entering my last module at Andrews and I can absolutely say there's no hand-holding here. Help, if you need it, but no hand-holding. Expectations are high but so will an employer's be.
typo s/b No HAND-HOLDING - Schipperke

OOPS! That's embarrassing.

Don't be embarrassed! I am nearly 70 and still make mistakes. It's a sure sign that we are humans, not machines! :)
Hardly "hand-holding" - LK
[ In Reply To ..]
There is a reason Career Step is considered a distant 3rd in the list of top schools, and probably the biggest factor in that is the lack of instructors. I'll tell you one thing, if my college daughters told me that their college lets them learn on their own and with the help of other students rather than having professors for "hand-holding," I'd demand every penny of the tuition back in full.
Hand holding at Career Step - Anonymous
[ In Reply To ..]
I also consider the lack of instructors at Career Step to be an issue. I did their coding program and it was quite difficult without an instructor. All the answers were there, but very little explanation in regard to why things were done a certain way, I actually began to question the accuracy of some of the coding. They do have instructors on staff but it's difficult to find one at the time you actually need help. The conference calls never work for me because I'm at work when they occur. I've almost reached the the end of the course but have abandoned the on-line studying in favor of my own textbooks, and may enroll in an additional program to supplement what I feel I have missed. I doubt if I'll take their final. I'm not saying Career Step is a bad school, but if you like instructor feedback at all, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

You are absolutely right. Medical students do not learn by answer keys and neither do MT students, or at least, optimally. It all goes back to the fact that they cannot know what they do not know, nor can they teach what they do not know. Sure, they can commissurate and compare notes as all students to everywhere, but teach each other, nah, I don't really think so. I surely wouldn't my records transcribed by someone who was a product of such a system. Give me someone who has had caring instructors any time. And to say that instruction is "hand-holding" is to expose the ignorance of the person who says it.
I can't speak for Andrews, but MTEC doesn't exactly - do any hand holding
[ In Reply To ..]
I couldn't get hold of my MTEC teacher most of the time. When I had a question (points taken off when I followed the texts and dictionaries given, etc.) she either didn't answer or wouldn't explain. Finally, I had to get another teacher. She was better until I graduated, but getting resume examples or any help after I finished from her was impossible. My first email to her after I graduated was met with an "I can't help you, I was only your teacher for 6 months" and she never responded again.

I know some people on MTStars make it sound like MTEC holds your hand, does everything for you, is worth every penny, etc. but that is sadly not the case. They have a great office staff, but their teachers were, in my experience, barely even there.
I loved my instructor - X
[ In Reply To ..]
My instructor was awesome! I could reach her during her business hours by phone or email. Now MTEC has implemented a new system and the students can page their instructors. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but from reading other stories, most graduates are completely satisfied with their education and are employed, as am I. I did NOT, however, receive any hand-holding, nor did I want that. I was encouraged to learn researching skills and critical thinking.
I'm certain I wasn't the only student with problems - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
The teacher I had made 2 very public mistakes which proved to me that I wasn't the only one who had a problem with her. I've seen others on MTStars relate similar stories to mine, and people on the MTEC boards would occasionally tell similar stories.

All I know is that when I complained about the teacher the first time, I was told I "didn't know how the real world worked" and told to, essentially, shut up. I gave it several months, complained to someone else, and was IMMEDIATELY given to a new teacher. The old teacher lied about several things during this situation, and I provided proof of these lies in hopes that the old teacher would be dealt with appropriately. I don't think she was, which tells me new students are dealing with her shenanigans right now.
I'm sorry... - X
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm not sure who your instructor was, but thankfully I was blessed with a great one. They should definitely do what is necessary to keep only the top notch instructors.

[ In Reply To ..]
You are correct, Old Pro. Those are the 3 that I would pick. I don't know about the the first, second and third place, since I think they are pretty even.

I graduated M-TEC a while ago (about 9 years) and they were well respected back then. I tested and got a job at MedQuist a month before I finished my final exam. At that time, though, MedQuist was THE place to work, so I was thrilled that they would hire me as a newbie, even though I started with clinic notes.

You would do well to choose any of those 3 schools.

Why is Andrews so great? - Schipperke

[ In Reply To ..]
There's a reason why Andrews is considered such a great MT school. The course work is tough, just as it should be. When you are progressing well and doing it right they let you know. When you are messing up they pitch in and help.
Can't ask for more than that from a school, can you?

Coding Schools - Where Did YOU Go?
Jun 01, 2010

Okay, here we go again.....if anyone has attended a coding school in the last year, is attending a coding school, could you please post your thoughts (was it worth the money, quality, etc)?  I know several people are still on the fence as to whether to pay the large sum to go to a private school (Andrews, DeVry) or attend community colleges in preparation to take their credentials in coding.  I've been reading posts saying the education from all is basically the same, of course it ...

Licensed Schools
Aug 10, 2012

I learned from someone who found out the hard way that it's important to make sure whatever school you go to is licensed by their state. The information is supposed to be displayed on their website and any other catalogs or ads. If not, there may be a problem. The school in question would tell everyone their state didn't require a license. It turned out that the school kept moving not only from state to state, but from country to country and the state they had been living in did requir ...

Penn Foster Schools

Connection Between Companies/MT Schools?
Feb 07, 2010

Have to admit I'm pretty shocked by several of the posts on this forum, especially concerning how the companies are operating.  New to the MT world here, and guess I'm green.  Hadn't heard much at the school I attended except this forum was "too negative."  I now see there's a legit reason for negative posts about companies if these posters are being honest, and I have no reason to believe they're not. Just wondering how tight a connection the MT schools ...

Before You Commit To Coding Schools
May 16, 2011

Hi all, I just wanted to say, before you commit to a coding course, make sure you have enough time to study! I started Andrews School last year, and right after I started I found out I was pregnant.  I work a full time job and now have a new baby.  After I completed the first module and started the second module, I was so stressed out I needed a break, now I am having trouble getting back into the swing of things and finding the time to study.  My entire tuition is paid for and I ...

Coding Schools - Andrews
Jul 14, 2011

In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with Andrews. I went through their medical transcription training course and did very well with my job search. Based on my training at Andrews, I have not had a problem with employment tests, passing the RMT and CMT, etc., and with the coding program, as long as I study hard  and do the assignments, I believe that I will have the same experience. Based on the excellent training I received at Andrews, I am beginning to go through the coding course. The ...

Choices Of Schools For Coding

MT Schools Promising Big Bucks
Feb 25, 2012

First, don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to be negative about this in any way and wish any new MT success. However, with this profession dying like it is and even very experienced MTs just trying to eke out even $10 an hour . . . It really aggravates me all of these MT schools and courses trying to suck innocent people in with their high tuition costs, etc. The fact is that nowadays it is akin to going and paying x amount of money to go work for $10 or less an hour. Online Schools For Transcription
Aug 04, 2012

I have been an MT for 4 years now and actually completed all my training at a local technical college.  Now, I find myself in a position to mentor some young Military Spouses regarding medical transcription and what online schools would be the better choice for completing a MT certification. Coding Schools/education
Mar 26, 2014

I think it would be very helpful for many people if some of the more senior coding people on this forum could advise on what new coders should look for in a school or training program.  I'm not looking for specific names, but rather that you should make sure your school teaches A, B and C.  Things you want to avoid are X, Y and Z.    Personally, my first school would probably have done the trick (a community college) if not for the fact that they only off ...

Is Anyone Else Annoyed At All The Phone Calls From Schools?
Mar 11, 2010

You can't get some of the schools to stop calling you even after you tell them you've enrolled with another school and graduated, and have a job.  Is anyone else offended by the high-pressure tactics?  If a school has to keep calling and offering discounts and specials, that's a red flag, or is it just me?  I got my training years ago and I still can't get them to go away.  You expect that from those cheesy sales people trying to sell you whatever, but th ...
